四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、On the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific, some villagers cut down trees in a special way. If a tree is too large to be cut down with an ax, they try something else-yelling(叫喊)at it.  Woodsmen with special powers climb up a tree at dawn and yell at it at the top of their voices. They continue doing this for 30 days. After 30 days, the tree dies and falls over. It seems like the yelling kills the spirit of the tree. According to the villagers, it always works.

It's too bad they don' t have the advantages of modern technology and a scientific mind.

No matter how true the story actually is, it reminds me of something.  I often yell at my wife, the telephone and workers. And sometimes I even yell at the T V, the newspaper and my children. I've been known to shake my fist(拳头)and yell at the sky at times. People like me can often be seen around us.

The man next door yells at his car a lot. And this summer I heard him yell at a ladder for most of an afternoon. We modem, educated people yell at traffic, bills, banks and machines. Machines and relatives get yelled at the most.

It doesn't do much good. Machines and things just sit there. Even kicking it doesn't usually help. As for people, well, the Solomon Islanders may have a point. Yelling at living things does tend to kill the spirit in them. Sticks and stones may break our bones, but words will break our hearts.

1How do the Solomon villagers cut down a very large tree?

    A. By using a special ax.   B. By using the power of nature.

    C. By using a mysterious power.   D. By yelling at the tree for a month.

2From Paragraph 3 , we learn that the writer seems to be .

    A. a kind man   B. a nice father

    C. a busy husband   D. an impatient boss

3What does the writer think about yelling in life?

    A. It's good for everything.   B. It solves traffic problems.

    C. It makes machines work.   D. It does no good to people.

4Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

    A. Yelling can solve all problems.

    B. Yelling at others will never hurt their spirit.

    C. It ' s common for people to yell at things around them.

    D. Solomon Islanders never use an ax to cut down trees.

5What does the story want to tell us?

    A. Yelling hurts both sides.   B. Everyone likes yelling.

    C. Solomon Islanders are very stupid.   D. Every living thing has its own spirit.

  • 25、   Japan fixes English

You’ve probably seen some pretty “interesting” English translations. For example, it is common to see “Chinglish” on restaurant menus and on signs in public areas in China.

Japan is now working to improve its English signs so that tourists will have an easier time getting around during the 2020 Olympics.

Improving public transportation signs is especially important, as tourists will take trains and buses to get around. The Japan Tourism Agency recently carried out a two-month investigation into the websites of 85 train and bus companies around the country.

The agency found some rather odd translations. For example, one transportation company refers to children as “dwarfs(侏儒)”. Other transportation errors include “Forgotten Center” for “lost and found”, and “release place” for “ticket machine”.

But does Japan have enough time to correct its English? One expert thinks it’s too late. Gregory Hadley, a professor at Niigata University, thinks it can’t be done. He pointed out that many companies simply won’t be able to afford to hire translators and reprint their materials.

In addition, the people who originally translated the materials probably won’t want to lose face by admitting to translating them correctly, he added.

Whether it can fix its signs or not, Japan is preparing for a wave of tourism. About 30 million people visited the country last year and the number will hit 40 million next year, when the 2020 Olympics officially kick off.

1In Japan, which of the following is the most important to improve before the 2020 Olympics?

    A.Restaurant menus. B.Tourist information centers.

C.Public transportation signs. D.Public restroom signs.

2A “Forgotten Center” probably refers to “________” in Japan.

A.dwarfs B.a lost and found area C.a ticket machine D.a youth hostel

3What is Gregory Hadley’s opinion about Japan’s English signage situation?

A.There are too many simple transportations in Japan.

B.Improving signs in public areas is important.

C.Changing incorrect signs makes companies lose face.

D.Japan won’t be able to finish correcting its English in all public areas.

4Compared to last year, the number of people who visit Japan will increase by________next year.

    A.10 million. B.20 million. C.30 million. D.40 million.

5What does the underlined phrase “kick off” mean in Chinese?

    A.踢开 B.爆发 C.开始 D.反冲

  • 26、It’s big, it’s nasty but it’s more than just a hole in the ground. Some landfills take in 2,000 tons of trash a day but America’s largest landfill takes in that amount each hour, which will be full in two to three years.

Garbage problem has been a long-standing issue. Volunteer students at the University of Arizona in the U.S. started the Garbage Project. They aimed at learning the influence of human’s activities on the environment by studying the garbage.

One important thing the students learned was that the garbage in landfills disappears very slowly. That was surprising to the students, as well as to many scientists who had predicted that about 70% of the garbage in landfills would break down naturally and quickly. From the landfills, students even found newspapers twenty years ago and forty-year-old hot dogs.

The Garbage Project also discovered that what people say they do was often very different from what they actually did. The volunteer students asked people what they bought, ate and drank, and then they compared this to what people threw away. For some reason, the two didn’t match. For example, the students found much more empty bottles of beer than people said they drank.

Information from the Garbage Project has helped us to see how much garbage we actually put in landfills. The students are hopeful that this will encourage us to find better ways to dispose (处置) of our garbage.

Of course, the best way to dispose of garbage depends on what kind of garbage it is: regular garbage, hazardou materials, or recyclables such as newspaper, glass bottles, and some metals. Regular garbage goes to regular landfills. Hazardous materials, on the other hand, contain poisonous chemicals or metals. They shouldn’t go into regular landfills. For example, waste batteries can pollute the soil and groundwater, which need to be recycled properly.

It’s necessary to reduce garbage from the source. With the development of living standards, people use too many plastic products only once before throwing them away, especially as online shopping becomes more popular. We can start reducing garbage by using cloth shopping bags and green delivery packages.

Unfortunately, recycling is expensive. It takes time and special treatment. However, in Japan, people recycle garbage so carefully that even plastic bottles and their caps go into different bins. Positive effects present gradually. In the last five years, the Japanese city of Kamikatsu has raised its rate of recycled waste to 80 percent.

It is a matter of great urgency and we must go into action now. There are many things that ordinary people can do to make less garbage. If everyone does the same, we will make our living environment safer and better.

【1】According to the passage, students of Garbage Project discovered that .

A.people knew what they actually threw away

    B.garbage disappeared as scientists predicted

    C.students collected newspapers for research

D.garbage was too much and lasted longer

【2】The word “hazardous” in Paragraph 6 probably means “ ”.

    A.wet

    B.common

    C.dangerous

    D.burnable

【3】What can we learn from the passage?

A.Disposing the garbage properly will make a difference.

B.Adding more landfills helps solve garbage problems.

C.Improving the living level can reduce the garbage.

D.Shopping online helps to save the environment.

  • 27、The human brain is divided into two sides, or hemispheres, called the right brain and the left brain. The two hemispheres work together, but each one specializes in certain ways of thinking.

Each side has its own way of using information to help us think, understand, and process informa-tion.The left side of the brain controls language. It is more verbal and logical. It names things and puts them into groups. It uses rules and likes ideas to be clear, logical, and orderly. It is best at speech, reading, writing, and math. You use this side of the brain when you memorize spelling and grammar rules or when you do a math problem.

The right side of the brain is more visual and creative. It specializes in using information it receives from the senses of sight, sound, smell, touch, and taste. This side of the brain likes to dream and experiment. It controls your appreciation of music, color, and art. You use this side when you draw a picture or listen to music.Although we all use both sides of our brains, one side is usually stronger or dominant. Some people are more “left-brained,” and others are more “right-brained”. Our dominant side influ-ences the kinds of jobs and hobbies we have. Politicians, artists, architects, and musicians depend on their right brains. Accountants, engineers, doctors, and lawyers usually rely on their left brains.
