24、 Think of a simple object—a piece of chalk, for example. Are you remembering its name, its shape, its color or its size? Are you remembering what it is used for, or the sound it makes when the teacher writes on the blackboard? Scientists say that memory includes different parts of the brain, such as language and the ability of sense. They believe that you begin to create a memory when you notice something with your senses. Then, messages are sent to different brain cells, which join together to form connections. A new connection goes into your short-term memory. It is stored there for about 30 seconds, and then it is either lost or stored in your long-term memory.
Having a good memory means making lots of connections and storing them in your long-term memory. To do this, you need to keep your brain in good shape. Eat plenty of brain food such as fish oil, fruit and vegetables. Laughter also makes your brain more active. Also, don’t forget to exercise. So do some sports or just move around a lot in the house. Finally, get plenty of sleep. This will make your memories grow stronger.
When you want to remember new information, you must pay special attention. Use your senses-sight, smell, hearing and touch-and keep repeating the information. To do well in your exams this year, turn off the TV, silence your mobile, and review your work regularly. To remember something special, use your imagination to create visual (视觉的) connections. For example, you need to take a pencil, an eraser, your ID card and chips to your next exam. Imagine the ID card as the body of an animal, the pencil its long neck, and the eraser its head. Your animal is hungry, so now imagine it eating a bag of chips. It may sound crazy, but it’s fun and it works. Another way is to do something different to your room. Turn a picture upside-down, or tie a sock around the door handle to remind (提醒) yourself of something to remember!

There are fantasy stories set in worlds of fairies(仙女)and wizards(巫师),and there are ones set in the real world. Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island is the second kind,a tale about a young person like you or your classmates. It takes place in a world like yours, but the most exciting things happen. You don't always need magic to tell a magical story!
Jim Hawkins,an English boy, first learns about treasure hidden on an island by the pirate(海盗)Captain Flint. He then gets the chance to join a long journey with Captain Smollett in hopes of finding the treasure. One of the members on the ship is a man called John Silver. Silver calls on others on the ship to join him in a mutiny(叛变).Jim tells Captain Smollett about Silver.
Once on the island,Jim sees just how dangerous Silver is as he watches Silver kill another pirate. While walking on the island,Jim meets a half—mad man named Ben Gunn. When Captain Flint left his treasure behind,he also left Ben.
After Silver gets control over the search, the other pirates attack(袭击)him suddenly just as Silver attacked Captain Smollett. Silver and Jim, both prisoners now, have to work together if they want to escape. Although he is a criminal, Silver shows he can also be brave. Nowadays, we’re more wasteful than ever-buying, using and throwing things away without thinking about the costs. We need to deal with the waste wisely-but how? One answer is to upcycle. You might make soil (土壤) from food waste for gardening. Do you know you can use the same way to deal with old clothing? You just need imagination! Making new things out of old clothes is the best way to mix my talent and my interest. Do you upcycle? If so, what new things have you made? If not, why not give it a try? | |
Reply Terry Posted at 9:08 a.m. on 11th February Why don’t you give your old clothes to people in need? I even give away the most expensive things I don’t wear anymore. So I can help the environment while giving something useful to people in need. Reply Gina Posted at 9:28 a.m. on 11th February Good point! I’m talking about only the oldest clothing in your room-the clothes that are too old to be worn by others. The same idea goes for food waste at restaurants and supermarkets. Before upcycling food, that can still be eaten, for example, using it to make soil. |
