1、 Holding conversations may not seem like a skill. After all, everyone often talks to other people. 1.但是与陌生人交谈使人觉得有点紧张和尴尬。 Here are some ways to make conversations more fun and less embarrassing.
Body language
Although it may seem strange, much communication happens without any words. 2.The way you stand and act tells people a lot about you. When you're talking with someone, stand up straight and look them in the eye. This shows that you're talking confidently. And if you're nervous, acting like you're confident can help you feel more confident. When you're listening, look at the other person. Lean (倚靠) forward to show that you're interested in what they're saying.
Back and forth
A good conversation is not a speech, which means that both people need to take part in. If you're doing all the talking, 3.停下来给别人说话的机会。 If they don't say anything, try asking them a question.
Ask questions
Questions can also help if you're struggling (努力的) to think of something to say. If you ask the other person a question, they'll talk for a while. Maybe they'll say something you relate with and can reply to. 4.People are generally excited to find others with similar interests. When you ask questions, try to come up with open-ended ones. That means questions where the answer is more than just "yes" or "no". Open-ended questions in English usually start with who, what, when, where and why.
Don't fear silence
Don't scare if the conversation has quiet moments. Every conversation has some. 5.Think of them as opportunities to change the subject to something you're interested in. You could also talk about something you've done recently. Or once again, you can ask a question about the other person.
As with any skill, you will improve at holding conversations with time. So if you're shy, be brave, ask a question, and start a conversation.

24、 Do you like chocolate? It’s popular all over the world, but why? Scientists are trying to discover its secrets.
The main thing is that chocolate makes us happy. This may have something to do with the 380 known chemicals(化学物质)which are found in it. The problem is that many of these chemicals appear in other types of food too. So, it’s difficult to know why the ones in chocolate make us feel good. But we aren’t all lost. A scientist found that chocolate makes the human brain(大脑)produce natural opiates(麻醉剂), called options. These can stop pain and make us feel good.
Others think that we feel good after eating chocolate because of a chemical called anandamide(大麻素). This appears naturally in the brain and seems to give us a feeling of happiness. Normally, our levels of anandamide are very low and our body uses it quickly. But two scientists believe that the anandamide in chocolate raises levels of the chemical in our brain. And other substances(物质)in chocolate slow down the speed at which we use the chemical. So, chocolate helps us feel happier for longer!
But which chocolate is the best? Well, for a start, there’s more anandamide in dark chocolate than milk chocolate. So, you need to buy some dark chocolate. Then, you should follow these five tips(窍门儿)from connoisseur(鉴赏家)chocolate makers Ghirardeli. They say that when choosing chocolate, you need to use all five senses.
Sight: good chocolate has a shine to it.
Smell: rub(摩擦)the chocolate with your finger to release(释放出)the aroma (芳香).
It should have a deep chocolate smell.
Sound: when you break a piece of chocolate it should snap(断裂)crisply(清脆地).
Touch: the chocolate should melt (融化)easily in your mouth and become a thick liquid.
Taste: good chocolate should not taste too sweet or too bitter. So, why don’t you go out to buy some chocolate and put it to the test?
【1】The scientists have found ________ in chocolate.

25、 When we do not understand each other's language, we can talk with the help of signs.
A Frenchman was once traveling in England. He could not speak English at all. One day he went into a restaurant and sat down at a table. When the waiter came, he opened his mouth, put his fingers in it and took them out again. He wanted to say, "Bring me something to eat.”
The waiter soon brought him a cup of tea. The man moved his head from side to side. The waiter understood him and took the tea away. In a moment he came with a cup of coffee. But the man again refused(拒绝) it. He shook(摇) his head whenever the waiter brought him something to drink, for drinks are not food, After a while, another man came in. This man saw the waiter, and he put his hand on his stomach(胃).That was enough. In a few minutes there was a large plate of meat and vegetables on the table in front of him.

27、Scientists have long believed one way to stop the Earth’s air from warming is by planting more trees. The idea is that more trees will take in or absorb(吸收) some of the CO2 in the air. CO2 is a gas released by cars, factories and other human activities. The gas traps heat in the Earth’s air, which warms the planet. However, two new studies have found that trees may not be as helpful in reducing CO2 as thought.
The first study was done at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina. Researchers pumped(打气) extra CO2 into a test area where green trees were growing. The trees grew thirty-four percent faster during the first three years. However, in time, the trees slowed to about their normal growth rate. The scientists say this is because trees need other nutrients(营养素), such as nitrogen(氮).
In the second study, researchers from Duke and Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine examined the soil(泥土) around trees. They discovered that as the leaves broke down into the soil, all the carbon was not trapped in the soil. Much of it was let into the air as CO2.
The findings of the two studies were published last month in Nature magazine. They suggest there is limited(有限的) value in planting trees to reduce the CO2 pollution in the air.
Forest planting has been a part of negotiations(谈判) on a world agreement to reduce greenhouse gases that scientists believe cause global warming. The United States, Canada, Japan and some other countries have supported the idea. But this new research suggests the idea is not as effective as environmental activists(积极分子) had thought. Scientist Ram Oren of Duke University led the study on tree growth. He says that earlier estimates(估计) on the ability of forests to absorb CO2 were overly hopeful.
Some other scientists say the research provides some of the first evidence on how trees react(反应) to CO2. Some other scientists say the research disputes(质疑) a belief among some coal and power companies. The companies say that more CO2 in the air will not create harmful global warming. Instead, they say it will increase forests and other plants.
【1】Why did the researchers put trees in extra CO2 in the first study?
A. To learn whether trees can still absorb CO2 under extreme conditions.
B. To get more oxygen from these trees.
C. To know how much CO2 that trees can absorb.
D. To see the effect of CO2 on the growth rate of these trees.
【2】What happened to the leaves falling from the trees in the second study?
A. They broke down and the main parts turned into oxygen.
B. They broke down and the carbon had mainly turned into CO2.
C. They broke down and the carbon was mainly absorbed in the soil.
D. They absorbed more CO2.
【3】Scientist Ram Oren thinks that common beliefs of the tree’s ability to absorb CO2 are __________.
A. just right B. not acceptable
C. a bit too cheerful D. too dangerous
