四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   Studies show that language learning in babies is improved when parents speak more than a few simple words and use a wider vocabulary. Earlier research found that the style of speech used by parents to communicate with their baby could increase language development.

One such speaking style is known as “parentese”. Research has shown that babies react better to this kind of language in the first months of life. Generally, “parentese” requires adults to speak in a higher voice and at a slower speed. The language is made easier to understand, while sentences are short and often repeated.

Can parents be taught good ways to improve their “parentese” skills? Patricia Kuhl, a professor of speech and hearing sciences, carried out a study on it. She says the purpose of the study was to find out whether a parent can be “trained” to create their own speaking style to improve language learning in children.

Naja Ferjan Ramirez helped lead the study. “Most parents know that the amount (数量) of language their child hears is important,” Ferjan Ramirez said. “What we shared with them through training is that how they talk to their baby may matter even more. ”

For the study, parents were given a small recording device (设备), which they put inside a piece of their baby’s clothing. All spoken communication from parents and the child was recorded. The recordings were made at three different periods of the child’s life: when the child was six, ten and fourteen months old. The parents were divided into two groups: a control group and an intervention (干预) group. Those in the intervention group received training after their six and ten month recordings.

The study found that between the ages of six and fourteen months, trained parents increased the amount of speech directed to the child and their use of “parentese” by l5 percent. Parents in the control group showed less growth in those areas, about 7 percent.

【1】What can parents do to improve their baby’s language learning?

A.Communicate with their baby with a few simple words.

B.Communicate with their baby with a wider vocabulary.

C.Communicate with their baby using longer sentences.

D.Communicate with their baby in a gentle voice.

【2】What can we learn about “parentese” from the text?

A.It means that adults talk with their babies in a lower voice.

B.It means that the language parents use becomes more difficult.

C.It means that adults talk with their babies more quickly.

D.It means that the sentences parents use are short.

【3】According to Ferjan Ramirez, what do the researchers want parents to know about through training?

A.The importance of the amount of language their child hears.

B.The importance of the type of language their child understands.

C.The importance of the way parents talk to their children.

D.The importance of high and low voices when parents talk to children.

【4】What can be concluded (推断) from the study mentioned above?

A.Trained parents are more likely to improve their children’s language learning.

B.Six to fourteen months is the best time to improve children’s language learning.

C.Parents in the control group used more “parentese” than in the intervention group.

D.Trained parents needed to use “parentese” for at least fourteen months.

  • 25、Sleep is like food for the brain. Enough sleep helps the body and brain grow and develop. According to the National Sleep Foundation in the US, adults need seven to nine hours of sleep every night. For students aged 10 to 17, a healthy amount is about eight to nine hours per night.

But many students don’t get enough sleep because of early school start times and heavy homework. About 80 percent of middle school students don’t get enough sleep, the China Youth and Children Research Center reported. For some students, they want to sleep early, but they keep worrying about their schoolwork and can’t fall asleep quickly. For others, they may even have insomnia which might keep them awake all night.

These sleeping problems greatly affect people’s lives. Experts have shown that lack of sleep for teenagers leads to poor grades. Students without enough sleep cannot pay attention in class or do well in sports. Also, the lack of sleep may make them depressed (沮丧的).

Luckily, with good sleep habits, it is easier to fall asleep. Some of these good habits include avoiding drinks that make people excited late in the day, going to sleep at the same time each night, and sleeping in a comfortable place that is dark, quiet, and neither too warm nor too cold.

  • 27、   Cabin hospitals save more lives

Feng Bangli, from Wuhan, Hubei, began to have a fever at the end of January and suspected that he had been infected with the virus. He tried several times to be admitted to a hospital but failed. He finally gave up and stayed at home, taking drugs given by doctors.

“At that time, too many patients were waiting to see doctors at every hospital, and it was not possible for me to get a bed,” said Feng. Days later, with the community staff’s help, Feng tested positive for COVID-19 and was sent to a makeshift hospital (临时医院) for treatment.

“Without such makeshift hospitals, many COVID-19 patients like me may never have found a bed,” said Feng.

Like Feng, over 12,000 COVID-19 patients in Wuhan received treatment and care at 15 makeshift hospitals. These hospitals were mainly used to receive patients with mild symptoms (轻症).

“Building makeshift hospitals was a key decision made in such an important moment when Wuhan was facing a formidable task of epidemic (疫情) control, and it has played an important role in both prevention and treatment of the disease,” he said.

“Makeshift hospitals have greatly eased pressure and made it possible to treat and isolate people in need,” said Xu Junmei, vice-president of Wuchang makeshift hospital.

Makeshift hospitals have now been copied in other countries. Eight makeshift hospitals are being built in Tehran, Iran, to fight against the virus. The one changed from the Iran Mall, the largest shopping mall in the country, is expected to have a total of 3,000 beds, according to People’s Daily.

On March 29, New York changed a grassy meadow in Central Park into a makeshift hospital, where it will provide 68 hospital beds.

“Considering the ways we can increase hospital capacity right now is very important,” says Dr Andrew Ibrahim, a surgeon at the University of Michigan told Architecture. “If hospitals can’t receive more patients, new facilities need to be built up.”

1What does the writer want to tell us by using Feng Bangli’s example?

A.COVID-19 has infected a large number of people in a very short time.

B.Hospitals should always be prepared for any unexpected situations.

C.The COVID-19 outbreak happened suddenly without the slightest warning.

D.Makeshift hospitals have played an important role in the fight against COVID-19.

2What does the underlined word “formidable” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?

    A.new B.basic C.tough D.strange

3What did Dr Andrew Ibrahim think of Tehran’s and New York’s new makeshift hospitals?

A.They wasted resources. B.They were greatly helpful.

C.They were not practical. D.They would not be as useful as China’s.

4What is the main purpose of the article?

A.To praise China’s quick response to the COVID-19 outbreak.

B.To call on other countries to copy China’s method of fighting the virus.

C.To show the value of building makeshift hospitals to fight COVID-19.

D.To compare the measures different countries have taken to deal with COVID-19.

The teacher stood before his class and was going to hand out the final exam papers. “I know you have all worked hard to get   【1】   for this test.”He said. “And because I know you can do it well, I would like to offer a B to anyone who will choose not to take the test.” Many students jumped   2   to thank the teacher and left the classroom. The teacher looked at the students left in the classroom and said, “Does anyone else want to get a B? This is your last   3 .”Two more students decided to go out.

Only seven students stayed behind in the classroom. The teacher then 4 out the papers. There were three sentences on the paper: Congratulations! You have just got an A in this class. Keep 5 in yourself.

I never had a teacher   6 that, but I think it is a test that any teacher can and should give. Students who don’t believe in what they have learned are B students at most.

The same is true in our real life. The A students are those who believe in what they are doing because they have learned from both success and failure. They have learned life’s lesson, not only from school education   7   also from things happening in their lives. So they have become better people.

Scientists say that by the age of eight, 80% of what we believe about ourselves has already been formed. You are a big kid now, and you realize that you have some limits(局限). However, there is   8   you can’t do if you believe in yourself and keep going. Sir Edmund Hilliary, the first person to the summit of Mount Everest (珠峰)said, “It’s not the summit of Mount Everest we got over but ourselves.
