四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、You either have it, or you don’t-a sense of direction. But why is it that some people could find their way across the Sahara without a map while others can lose themselves in the next street?

Scientists say we’re all born with a sense of direction, but it is not properly understood how it works. One theory is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. Research being carried out at Liverpool University supports this idea and suggests that if we don’t use it, we lose it.

“Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around,” says Jim Martland, research director of the project. “However, if they are not allowed out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they never develop the skills.”

Jim Martland also emphasizes that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He makes the following suggestions:

If you are using a map, turn it so that it relates to(……有联系) the way you are facing.

If you leave your bike in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree-something easy to recognize. Note landmarks on the route as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route.

Simplify(简化) the way for finding your direction by using lines such as streets in a town, streams, or wells in the countryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone and note any landmarks such as towerblocks or hills which can help to find out where you are.

Now you will never get lost again!

1Children have the ability to find the way around when they are ______years old.

    A. 5   B. 6   C. 7   D. 8

2Which of the following things cannot be used as landmarks?

    A. Tower blocks.   B. Hills.   C. Wells.   D. Bikes.

3What does the underlined word “emphasize” mean in the passage?

    A. To give special importance to something.

    B. To express thanks for somebody.

    C. To understand or become aware of a fact.

    D. To admire somebody.

    4Scientists believe that __________.

    A. some babies are born with a sense of direction

    B. people learn a sense of direction as they grow older

    C. people never lose their sense of direction

    D. everybody has a sense of direction from birth

5What may be the best title of the passage?

    C. People’s ability of finding the way.   D. Scientists’ research on skills.

You will have a lot of reading to do in this grade this year. You can do more of it in less time if you learn to read rapidly.

Perhaps you have been told about some habits which keep a person from reading fast and have been strongly asked to break those habits which you might have.

Do you still have any of these bad habits? Check yourself by answering “yes” or “no” to these questions.

    (1) Do you move your lips (嘴唇) when reading silently?

    (2) Do you point to words with your finger as you read?

    (3) Do you move your head from side to side as you read?

    (4) Do you read one word at a time?

If you answer “yes” to any of these questions, start at once to break the habit. If you move your lips, hold your fingers over them, or hold a piece of paper between your lips while you are reading. Then if your lips move, your will know it and can stop them.

If you point to words, hold the two sides of your book, one side with your left hand, the other side with your right hand. Then you won’t have a free finger to use in pointing while reading. If you move your head, place your chin (下巴) in one hand and hold your head still (静止不动的).

If you read no more than one or two three words at a time, you need to work very hard in learning to take in (吸收) more words at each glance (一瞥) as your eyes travel across the lines of words.

Even if you do rather fast now, you can learn to read even faster. As you probably have been told, the set of fast reading is to take in whole groups of words at each glance. Read in thought groups and force (迫使) your eyes along the lines of words at fast as you can make them go. Anyone who practices doing these things will be able to read faster.

1You may hold your fingers over your lips while reading so as ________.

A.to tell others to be silent

B.to feel whether your lips move or not

C.to hold a piece of paper between them

    2When you read,   .

    A.don’t keep your head still

B.don’t hold your books with your hands

C.don’t use your finger to point to words

3If you learn to read fast,   .

A.you can read more in less time

    B.you can write faster

    C.you can understand better

4You must   those habits that we are talking about in this reading.

    A.have B.get rid of (改掉) C.keep

5This reading mainly tells about   .

    A.the way of reading fast

    B.the importance of fast reading

    C.the bad habits in reading

  • 26、Old Dawson had the best apples in town, but kids knew they mustn’t go into his yard to pick a delicious apple, even off the ground, because Dawson, a badtempered (坏脾气的) man, they said, would come after you with his gun.

One Friday, 12-year-old Janet was going to stay all night with her friend Amy. They had to walk by Dawson’s house on the way to Amy’s house. Like most of the children, Janet was scared of the old man because of the stories she’d heard about him.

Amy said that Mr. Dawson wouldn’t hurt anyone. Still, Janet was growing more nervous with each step closer to the old man’s house. When they got close enough, Dawson looked up with his usual frown (皱眉), but when he saw it was Amy, a big smile changed his whole face as he said, “Hello, Miss Amy. I see you’ve got a little friend with you today.”

Amy smiled back and told him Janet was staying overnight and they were going to listen to music and play games. Dawson told them that sounded fun, and offered them each a fresh picked apple off his tree.

As they walked on, Janet asked Amy, “Everyone says he’s the meanest man in town. Why was he so nice to us?”

Amy explained that when she first started walking past his house, he wasn’t very friendly and she was afraid of him, but she always smiled at him. It took a while, but one day he half smiled back at her.

After some more time, he started smiling real smiles and then started talking to her. Just a “Hello” at first, then more. She said he always offers her an apple now, and is always very kind.

We’re always trying to achieve so much, and it’s so easy to get caught up in (被卷入;陷入) everyday life that we forget we can bring cheer to ourselves and others simply. Giving a smile takes so little effort; let’s smile to others.

C.he always took a gun with him

  • 27、   Now they Vieira children are adults, and they sometimes travel to Spain (西班牙) to visit  their family and friends. But they can't communicate with them. Unfortunately this is common. When people move to new countries, they often leave their own customs and mother language behind. This is a mistake because there are many benefits to knowing more than one language.

One advantage of speaking more than one language is that you can communicate with more people around the world. You don't have to depend on others to talk for you, so you are more independent. People who knew only one language must use others to help them communicate.

Furthermore, speaking the second language also allows people to experience other cultures and customs more effectively. Local expressions, vocabulary, and even jokes can have a powerful effect on a person's understanding of other culture. So knowing more than one language increases your knowledge of other cultures.

Finally, having more multi-language speakers improves relationships between countries. If people from different countries can communicate well, the world can became closer. Countries will then have more respect for each other and better understand each other's problems.

The benefits of knowing more than one language are clear. In fact, there are no disadvantages. It is very sad that many people don't try to learn another language. It's even worse when people let themselves forget their mother language and become silenced.

    1What's the passage mainly about?

A.The benefits of learning other language.

B.The reasons why people come to America.

C.The importance of learning English well.

D.The ways of learning another language.

2The passage begins with the experience of Vieira family in order to ________.

A.introduce the main characters to the readers

B.describe the advantages of moving abroad

C.show the problem of speaking one language

D.discuss the need of understanding other cultures

3According to the passage, if you can speak more than one language, you can ________.

    A.remember your mother language

    B.communicate more independently

C.make more friends around the world

D.have a better understanding of history
