四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、   Fighting coronavirus is an experience that will forever be remembered. Now that I've recovered, I'm sharing my story because I want people to take this situation seriously. To turn things around, we have to stay home. We have to fight this battle together — and we have to win.

I think it started on the night my boyfriend and I went to celebrate his sister-in-law's birthday. We didn't think anything of it at the time, of course. The news was just beginning to report the spread of COVID-19 in America. I was still living my life just as I always had — riding the train to work each day, working long hours, and going out with friends and family.

My boyfriend, Luis, began showing symptoms on Monday, but we thought it was a typical cold. Then it took me down. It began with a low fever. I felt really weak. At this point, coronavirus had begun to take over New York. On Tuesday, the headache started. It was so intense that I had to lie down. By the end of the week, everything hurt. Luis and I went to nearby urgent care. After being examined, I chose to be tested, but I didn't receive my results until a week later. The doctor sent me home with advice to take Tylenol (泰诺, 感冒药) but said there was nothing more he could do for me. On the way home, we bought whatever medicine we could find, for the store had run out of Tylenol.

That Saturday evening was the worst. I had a high fever and I couldn't sleep. I was sweating a lot, and my knees, hips, and back were in terrible pain. I lost my sense of taste and smell. Then I developed stomach pain.

As I lay there, I was terrified that there wouldn't be enough doctors, nurses, or beds to help me. The thought of being alone, and possibly dying alone, in the hospital, weighed heavily on my thoughts, and I feared the uncertainty.

My fever finally broke the following Wednesday. It was such a relief. Two days later, the health department called me with the news that I'd tested positive for COVID-19.

Looking back, I really wish that people had taken this virus more seriously earlier. I wish people understood how severe this is. I'm wearing a mask in public from now on. I'm not taking chances. This was really painful, and we got lucky.

1What did the author do to fight coronavirus?

A.She stayed at home and got rest.

B.She fought alone in the hospital.

C.She lived her life just as she always had.

D.She took Tylenol as the doctor suggested.

2How did the author feel about her recovery?

    A.Surprised. B.Lucky. C.Hopeful. D.Proud.

3Why does the author tell us her story?

    A.To record her unforgettable experience.

B.To teach people how to fight coronavirus.

C.To celebrate her victory over coronavirus.

D.To call on people to take the virus seriously.

  • 25、Edith Cavell was born in a little English village. She was a clever, hard-working girl and did well at school, especially in music and French. After she left school, her first job was to take care of the children of a rich family in Belgium(比利时). The language they spoke was French, so she found that her school studies were useful. She could understand them easily, at the same time she taught the children to speak English and play the piano.

After hearing that her father was seriously ill, Edith returned home to look after him. She then decided to become a nurse. Afterwards for five years she worked in an English hospital where she proved to be highly professional(专业的)at her job. A Belgian doctor was so impressed(印象深的)that he invited her to his country to organize a training school for nurses. The First World War (第一次世界大战) broke out in 1914 and Edith Cavell’s school of nursing became a hospital. She stayed there to look after the sick and wounded soldiers (伤员). Edith treated them with kindness. Between November 1914 and August 1915 she secretly helped about 200 wounded soldiers and prisoners (囚犯) escape from the Germans. Later the German army found out what Edith had done and they arrested her. Finally, the Germans killed her, but they could not kill her memory. A tall statue(雕塑)has been built in Trafalgar Square, London, in honor(纪念)of the brave English nurse.

  • 26、As kids, we learn how to write, maybe play a musical instrument and draw. So why don’t we learn to code(编码) computer programs too? What coding has in common with writing, playing music and creating art is that it lets you bring your ideas to life. Coding is all about creativity and that’s why I love it.

    Creating with code

CoderDojo helps young people around the world to learn computer programming for free. When I went to my first CoderDojo class in Dublin City University in Ireland, at age nine, I didn’t know anything about coding or even what it was. But I remember making my very first web page that first day, and being surprised that I could create such a thing. It was a great feeling that I think every young person should experience!

By going to CoderDojo every week, I learned how to make websites, apps and games. One of my apps is called Auto-Journalist. It can help journalists(记者) and interviewees do interviews even if they are both really busy or live in different time zones. It is still in development, and I have showed it at an event called Coolest Projects Awards, where young people get to show the public what they have created with code. It’s so much fun to share one’s creations, and to see what everyone else has made too.

    Learning environment

For the past three years I have also been helping to teach other young people at CoderDojo DCU. In recent years I have also noticed many more girls attending CoderDojo DCU to try out coding. This has a lot to do with the CoderDojo girls’ classes—girls and young women take part in it with their friends, and it doesn’t feel like coding is a “boy thing”. It is really wonderful to see this, because we need more girls and women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). It’s a good way to learn more about technology.

    Start early

One of the main things I have learned in the last few years is that coding is not only for adults, coding is for young people, too. And when you are a child it is a great time to start coding, because your imagination is the limit for what you can create!

Want to learn more? Find out if there is a CoderDojo near you at www.coderdojo.com or set one up yourself! Also check out Code.org which has lots of fun drag-and-drop coding games.

【2】 Why do more girls begin to learn coding?

    A. There are coding classes for girls.

    B. Girls want to learn a “boy thing”.

    C. There are more girls in STEM.

    D. Girls can meet cool boys there.

【3】What does the writer think of coding?

    A. It is better than playing music.

    B. It limits children’s imagination.

    C. It stops people from learning fast.

D.It helps children with their creativity.

【4】What is probably the best title for this passage?

    A. Start Coding as Early as Possible

    B. Come for Fun in CoderDojo Class

  • 27、In a class discussion not long ago, I asked my students the following question, “How long could you feel comfortable and right without food?” One student quickly answered, “About two hours.” The answer is true. For most of us, we begin to feel hungry in a few hours after each meal. We can’t imagine starting our day by waking up hungry, going all day without food and going to bed with even greater hunger.

The statistics (数据) on hunger in the United States are much surprising to all of us. According to Feeding America, “50,000,000 Americans don’t know where their next meal is coming from. That’s the number in one of the wealthiest nations on the planet. And one in four of these 50,000,000 people are children.”

No Kid Hungry surveyed more than 1,000 teachers and principals around the country and found that 73 percent of teachers said they regularly teach hungry students who don’t have enough food to eat at home, and 87 percent of principals said they often see hungry students in school. As a result of so many hungry students, teachers spend nearly $40 a month buying food for kids with their own money.

This is the time of the year when children do not have the benefit (好处) of school lunch programs. Here are some ways we can do to help change this situation: First, we can give money to the local food bank. Next, we can donate food in our local area. Third, we can volunteer our time at a local food bank. So, on our next visit to the grocery store, add an extra food idem that can be donated to a food bank. Don’t wait to make a difference in a child’s life.

1Which of the following is true?

    A. Many Americans don’t have enough food to eat.

    B. Most children in the US don’t want to eat breakfast.

    C. American children are in hunger right now.

    D. American schools don’t provide free breakfast.

2The writer’s purpose of writing this text is to ______.

    A. show the importance of school lunch programs

    B. ask us to make some changes for children’s food

    C. ask us to buy some more food when shopping next time

    D. ask us to do something for students’ lunch programs
