四、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 24、The Qinghai-Tibet plateau is a mountainous area in western China that sits about 4,000 meters above sea level. This beautiful natural environment is made up of grassy lands, lakes and glaciers (冰川). Very few people live in the area, but it is home to many animals, including the endangered Tibetan antelope (藏羚羊).

Thousands of Tibetan antelopes once lived in this area, but their populations dropped in the 1980s and 1990s. This was in large part the result of poaching (偷猎). Poachers often killed Tibetan antelopes for their soft and highly prized wool.

Over recent decades, however, much has been done to protect these animals. The government has made it much more difficult for poachers to operate in the area by introducing strict laws. And in the spring, when thousands of Tibetan antelopes make a long journey to Hoh Xil, government workers follow the antelopes, making sure that they are protected from poachers and from other wild animals.

The government has also taken steps to slow down tourism in the area, since tourists often disturb the natural habits of animals.

All of this work has had good results. Tibetan antelopes are enjoying much better conditions than before, and their populations are rising once again. Today there are more than 60,000 Tibetan antelopes in the area—and this number continues to grow every year.

    【1】Which sentence is NOT correct?

A.Poaching caused the population of Tibetan antelopes to drop decades ago.

B.The population of Tibetan antelopes is staring to grow again.

C.The government is encouraging tourism in the Tibetan antelope's natural habitat.

D.The Qinghai-Tibet plateau has a small human population.

【2】Why did poachers kill Tibetan antelopes?

A.They wanted to get the valuable wool.

B.They wanted to live in their habitat.

C.Tibetan antelopes brought trouble to them.

D.They wanted to trade their meat.

【3】Why do government workers follow Tibetan antelopes on their long journeys?

A.They want to record their living habits.

B.They want to protect them from poachers.

C.They want to make sure that they are protected from other animals.

D.They want to keep them safe from poachers and other animals.

    【4】Which is the best title?

    A.Endangered animals.

B.A success story: protecting Tibetan antelope.

C.Reasons for the disappearing of Tibetan antelope.

    D.More antelopes now!

  • 25、   A good joke can be the hardest thing to understand when studying a foreign language.

There’s more to learn understanding a joke in a foreign language than understanding vocabulary and grammar.

Being able to understand local jokes is often seen as an ice-breaker for a language learner who wants to build friendships with native speakers.

“I always felt that humor was a ceiling(上限)that I could never break through,” said Hannah Ashley, who once studied Spanish in Madrid. “I could never speak to people on the same level as I would speak to a native English speaker. I almost came across as quite a boring person because all I could talk about was facts.”

In fact, most of the time, jokes are only funny for people who share a cultural background or understand humor in the same way.

Сhіnеѕе-Аmеrісаn соmеdіаn(喜剧演员)Jое Wоng(Нuаng Хі)fоund thіѕ оut fіrst-hаnd(亲身经历). He had achieved great success doing stand-up comedy(美式单口相声)in the US, but when he returned to China in 2008 for his first live show in Beijing, he discovered that his humor didn’t translate. People didn’t think his Chinese jokes were as funny as his English ones.

In Australia, many foreigners find understanding jokes about sports to be the biggest headache. “The hardest jokes are related to rugby(橄榄球)because I know nothing about rugby,” said Melody Cao, who was once a student in Australia. “When I heard jokes I didn’t get, I just laughed along.”

In the other two major English-speaking countries, the sense of humor is also different. British comedian Simon Pegg believes that while British people use irony(讽刺)—basically, saying something they don’t mean to make a joke—every day, people in the US don’t see the point of using it so often. “British jokes tend to(倾向于)be more subtle (不易察觉)and dark, while American jokes are direct with their meanings, a bit like Americans themselves,” he wrote in a newspaper.

1By using the underlined sentence, the writer means that .

A.you need to learn about a culture to understand its jokes

B.local jokes can help you to understand the local culture better

C.making jokes can help you form friendships with native speakers

D.understanding jokes requires excellence in vocabulary and grammar

2What can we guess about Hannah Ashley?

A.She feels confident in using Spanish.

B.She believes that it’s better to tell the facts than jokes.

C.She thinks that Spanish people do not have much of a sense of humor.

D.Not being able to understand their humor makes her seem boring to Spanish people.

3Joe Wong is used as an example to .

A.prove that it can be difficult to translate jokes

B.show that there are cultural differences in humor

C.show that your language ability influences your sense of humor

D.suggest that bilingual people(双语者)have no problems making people laugh

    4What are American jokes like?

    A.Ironic. B.Subtle. C.Direct. D.Dark.

5From the article, we can learn that   .

A.Americans might not be able to enjoy British jokes

B.British people’s dark jokes often make people uncomfortable

C.English native speakers can all understand English jokes easily

D.jokes about sports are the most difficult ones for foreign people

  • 26、Somebody Loves You

One cold rainy night, I was working on my Legos in my   bedroom.   I   was   dreaming   of   the   day   when   I   have earned enough money to buy my favourite set. To help me, my father rewarded me one dollar a day after I jogged with him in the morning.

Suddenly, the doorbell rang. I jumped from my chair and raced to the top of the steps, wondering who would visit us on such a rainy night. My mother opened the door. Surprisingly, she found a very untidy man. Overcome by pity, my mother invited him inside to the living room.

I went downstairs quietly so I could get a better look. I couldn’t hear clearly what they were saying, but I saw the man holding his head in his hands and crying, which made my chest ache.

I raced back to my room, grabbed the one-dollar coin I had got that morning, ran back to the man, put the coin in his hand and gave him a hug. At that moment, I had no idea why I did so. Feeling embarrassed, I stood still.

In a while, the stranger sat quietly with his head bowed. Tears streamed down his face as he tightly held that coin. Finally, he said, ―I just thought nobody cared about me. For the last twenty years, I have been so alone… I have no family. That was the first hug I have gotten in — hmmm… I don’t know how long. It’s hard to believe that somebody cares.

Being a kid, I hadn’t thought about what I was doing that night. I just had the reaction to the sight of someone else’s pain. On our earlier morning jogs, my dad and I had talked about the importance of giving, but I hadn’t had any idea of what it really meant.

Before the man left that night, my parents asked him why he had knocked on our door. He said that as he was walking along the streets, hopeless and ready to die, he had noticed a bumper sticker on the car in front of our house. The bumper (保险杠) sticker on the car read: SOMEBODY LOVES YOU.

【1】According to what the writer saw, he realized the stranger was _____.

    A.fine

    B.angry

    C.glad

    D.sad

【2】The writer ran back to the stranger to _______.

A.have a better look of him

B.show him his new set of Legos

    C.give him a coin and a hug

D.ask why he knocked on their door

【3】After the stranger left the writer’s house, he might _____.

    A.start a new life

    B.earn more money

    C.give himself up

    D.keep the car sticker

  • 27、   Fear and its companion pain are two of the most useful things that men and animals possess if they are properly used. If fire did not hurt when it burnt, children would play it until their hands were burnt away. Similarly, if pain existed but fear did not, a child would burn itself again and again, because fear would not warn the child to keep away from the fire that had burnt him or her before. A really fearless soldier—and some do exist—is not a good soldier because he is soon killed; and a dead soldier is of no use to his army. Fear and pain are therefore two guards without which men and animals might soon die out.

In our first sentence we suggested that fear ought to be properly used. If, for example, you never go out of your house because of the danger of being knocked down and killed in the street by a car, you are letting fear rule you too much. Even in your house you are not absolutely safe: a plane may crash on your house, or ants may eat away some of the wood in your roof , and they later may fall on you , or you may get cancer!

The important thing is not to let fear rule you , but instead to use fear as your servant and guide. Fear will warn you of dangers; then you have to decide what action to take.

In many cases, you can take quick and successful action to avoid the danger. For example, you see a car coming straight towards you; fear warns you, you jump out of the way, and all is OK.

In some cases, however, you decide that there is nothing that you can do to avoid the danger. For example, you cannot prevent a plane from crashing into your house, and you may not want to go and live in a desert where there are no plants. In this case , fear has given you its warning; you have examined it and decided on your course of action, so fear of this particular danger is no longer of any use to you , and you have to try to overcome it.

1Children would play with fire until their hands were burnt away if ________.

A.they were given no warning beforehand B.they didn't have any sense of pain at all

C.they had never burnt themselves D.they felt afraid of the fire

    2A really fearless soldier ________.

A.is of a little use to his army B.is not afraid of battles at all

C.is nothing but a dead soldier D.is easy to get killed in a battle

3People sometimes succeed in timely avoiding dangers because ________.

A.they are warned of the danger and take quick action

B.they are quick both in mind and in action

C.they are calm in face of danger

    D.they have gained much experience

4It is implied but not stated that ________.

    A.fear is always something helpful

    B.too much fear is harmful

C.fear should be used as a servant and guide

D.fear is something strange and particular
