24、 We’ve all been there: in a lift, in line at the bank or on an airplane, around by people who are, like us, deeply look at their smartphones or, worse, fighting with the uncomfortable silence.
What’s the problem? It’s more likely that none of us start a conversation because it’s challenging, or we think it’s unnecessary. But the next time you find yourself among strangers, consider that small talk is worth the trouble. Experts say it’s an invaluable social practice that results in big advantages.
Small talk is the grease (润滑剂) for social communication, says Bernardo Carducci, director of the Shyness Research Institute at Indiana University Southeast. “Almost every great love story and each big business deal begins with small talk,” he explains. “The key to successful small talk is learning how to connect with others, not just communicate with them.”
In a 2014 study, Elizabeth Dunn, professor of psychology at UBC, invited people on their way into a coffee shop. One group was asked to look for an interaction (互动) with its waiter; the other, to speak only when necessary. The results showed that those who chatted with their waiter reported higher positive (积极的) feelings and a better coffee shop experience. “It’s not that talking to the waiter is better than talking to your husband.” says Dunn. “But interactions with peripheral (边缘的) members of our social network matter for our well-being also.”
Dunn believes that people who reach out to strangers feel a greater sense of belonging (归属感), a relationship with others. Carducci believes developing such a sense of belonging starts with small talk. “Small talk is the basis of good manners.” he says.

25、 It was not long ago that I first learned how important having a passion(激情) is to life.
That day I went with my mum to drive my sister to the library. I was bored. Then, as my mum stopped at a red light, someone on the side of the road caught my attention. It was a man dressed in rags(破旧衣服).He was homeless. That didn't interest me, for I had seen many like him before.
But in some way he was different. This man was not sitting down with a sad expression. He had a radio in his hand and was dancing happily to the music. The radio seemed to be the most precious thing he had.
“Mum, why does that man have a radio even though he's homeless?” I asked.
“He bought it,” she answered. I was still confused.
“But if he's homeless, why doesn't he use the money to buy food or clothes? He wasted it on something he doesn't need.”
“Well, Sarah, sometimes food and clothes aren't the most important things. We need happiness, too.”
That man must care enough about music, so he bought a radio instead of food or clothes. I soon realized that happiness is the key to life. Without it, there's nothing to expect. A passion gives a person the feeling of happiness they need to keep going.
Since then I've never spent a day without thinking of what's truly important. A home, a meal, clothes—these things are not the only things that make up our lives. What's often forgotten is that we all need a joy, a light in a dark day. We all need a passion.

26、 Conflict is on the menu tonight at the care La Chope. This evening, as on every Thursday night, psychologist Maud Lehanne is leading two of France's favourite pastimes coffee drinking and the "talking cure". Here they are learning to get in touch with their true feelings. It isn't always easy. The customers-some thirty Parisians who pay just under $2 (plus drinks) per session-are quick to intellectualize (高谈阔论), slow to open up and connect. "You are forbidden to say 'one feels', or 'people think'," Lehanne told them. "Say 'I think', 'Think me'."
A care society where no intellectualizing is allowed? It couldn't seem more un-French. But Lehanne's psychology care is about more than knowing oneself: it's trying to help the city's troubled neighborhood cafes. Over the years, Parisian cafes have been influenced by the changes in the French lifestyle-longer working hours, a fast-food boom and a younger generation's desire to spend more time at home. Many new theme cafes appear to change the situation. Cafes focused around psychology, history, and engineering are catching on, filling tables well into the evening.
The city's "psychology cafes", which offer great comfort, are among the most popular places. Middle-aged housewives, retirees (退休人员), and the unemployed come to such cafes to talk about love, anger, and dreams with a psychologist. And they come to Lehanne's group just to learn to say what they feel. "There's a strong need in Paris for communication," says Maurice Frisch, a cafe La Chope regular who works as a religious instructor in a nearby church. "People have few real friends. And they need to open up." Lehanne says she'd like to see psychology cafes all over France. "If people had normal lives, these cafes wouldn't exist," she says. "If life weren't a battle, people wouldn't need a special place just to speak." But then, it wouldn't be France.
【1】What are people encouraged to do at the cafe La Chope?
A. Express their true feelings. B. Keep in touch with friends.
C. Show off their knowledge. D. Learn a new subject.
【2】What are the new theme cafes expected to do?
A. Create more jobs. B. Supply better drinks.
C. Serve the neighborhood. D. Save the cafe business.
【3】Why are psychology cafes becoming popular in Paris?
A. Because they bring people true friendship.
B. Because they offer a place for business links.
C. Because they help people realize their dreams.
D. Because they give people spiritual support.
27、Have you ever heard of e-waste(electric waste,电子垃圾), which can be produced every day? How do you deal with your computers, MP4 players and mobile phones when they’re broken or you want a new one?
Most people just throw them away. With the development of electric industry, e-waste pollution has become a serious problem. According to the United Nations, in 2014, people around the world produced 41.8 million tons of e-waste and only recycled 6.5 million tons. The US was the biggest waster, producing 7.1 million tons. China came second, with 6 million tons.
It’s important to pay attention to e-waste. It can either be valuable or harmful(有害的), depending on how we deal with it. E-waste is a valuable urban mine(城市矿藏). The value of the metals, like gold and silver in the waste around the world, is amazing. And the metals can be reused. But if people throw them away, the toxic chemicals(有毒化学物质) can get into the earth or air, effectingthe environment and people’s health.
