  • 24、   Barbara was driving her six-year-old son, Ben, to his piano lesson. They were late, and Barbara was beginning to think she should have called it off. • 26、   I really love my job because I enjoy working with small children and like the challenges and awards from the job. I also think my work is important. There was a time when I thought I would never have that sort of career(职业).

I wasn’t an excellent student because I didn’t do much schoolwork. In my final term I started thinking what I might do and found I didn’t have much to offer. I just accepted that I wasn’t the type to have a career.

I then found myself a job, looking after two little girls. It wasn’t too bad at first. But the problems began when I agreed to live in, so that I would be there if my boss had to go out for business in the evening. We agreed that if I had to work extra hours one week, she’d give me time off the next. But unluckily, it didn’t often work out. I was getting quite tired and feeling very bored, because I had too many late nights and early mornings with the children.

One Sunday, I was in the park with the children, and met Megan who used to go to school with me. I told her about my situation. She suggested that I should do a course and get a qualification(资格证书)if I wanted to work with children. I didn’t think I would be accepted because I didn’t take many exams in school. She persuaded(说服) me to phone the local college and they were really helpful. My experience helped me a lot and I got on a part-time course. I had to leave my job with the family, and got work helping out at a kindergarten.

Now I’ve got a full-time job there. I shall always be thankful to Megan. I wish I had known earlier that you could have a career, even if you aren’t top of the class at school.

C.got much help from her boss D.took a day off every other week

A.Less successful students can still have a career.

C.Hard work makes an excellent student.

D.One must choose the job she like.

  • 27、   Nidhi Arora used to be the HR manager of a large Indian company. After sitting on lots of job interviews, she noticed a serious problem. Today’s young people are very clever. They do well in exams. However, they know little about current affairs(时事). This is because they almost never read newspapers.

In Arora’s opinion, understanding what is happening around the world is important. It helps young people know what they need to do: What does the world need? Could I create that?

However, there was another problem. The newspapers adults read use difficult language. None could be given to a child. Arora decided to make a four-page paper for kids on her own. With encouragement from many mothers, the Children’s Post was born in 2017.

The paper covers a wide number of topics, including international affairs, environment, technology and history. Readers can also find puzzles, poems, short stories and cartoons in the paper. Arora has managed to put together a team of seven editors. The editors decide the content. Sometimes, they ask their readers what they want to read more of and change accordingly. The completed copy then reaches Arora for further edits. She makes sure the facts and grammar are correct and that the language is simple.

Today, the Children’s Post is the only daily newspaper for children in India. More than 3,500 copies are sold every day. Arora is always thinking about improving her paper. She hopes every kid in India could develop the habit of reading newspapers.

1What did Nidhi Arora find after sitting on lots of job interviews?

A.That many children were not interested in school.

B.That there was no newspaper for children in India.

C.That many young people were having difficulty finding good jobs.

D.That young people knew little about what was happening around the world.

2Why does Arora think understanding current affairs is important?

A.Because it can help young people focus on their studies.

B.Because it can help young people know what they need to do.

C.Because it can help young people invent new things.

D.Because it can raise young people’s interest in new technologies.

3What does the underlined word “content” (in Paragraph 4) probably mean?

A.The level of difficulty of the articles.

B.All the things that the paper includes.

C.The number of pagers that the paper has.

D.The quality of pictures that the paper uses.

4As an editor of the Children’s Post, what does Arora mainly focus on these days ?

    A.Writing articles for the paper.

    B.Checking the facts and grammar.

C.Making sure the language isn’t simple.

D.Asking readers what they want to read.

5What does Arora mainly want to do by editing and improving the Children’s Post ?

A.To help Indian children improve their English.

B.To attract talented young people to her company.

C.To realize her dream of becoming a famous woman in India.

D.To help Indian children develop the habit of reading newspapers.
