Mr. Binkley talked to us about how people used to look for gold. __【2】__ . It seemed simple. You get a pan, fill it with dirt and water and then swirl (旋动) it around until the big stones are washed out along with other things. Gold, being heavier, is left at the bottom.

25、Why Music Isn’t for Everyone?
They say music is universal, and it seems to be true since wherever we go, we see people listening, playing or dancing to it. We tend to think that music is larger than our cultural differences and shows the deeper connections between us.
But according to a recent study published in the journal Current Biology, music doesn’t speak to everyone. There is a condition, the researchers argue, called “musical anhedonia (音乐快感丧失)”. They say that those who have this condition lack the ability to experience pleasure from music.
For the study, 30 people listened to the same, mostly classical music pieces. They were then asked to complete a questionnaire on how they felt about the music. At the same time, the researchers measured their heart rate and skin reaction, which are considered physiological (生理的) measures of emotion.
According to the researchers, most of the people in the study got pleasure from the music. They had a quicker heartbeat and sweated (出汗) more. However, a small number had very little and even no pleasant feeling while they listened. These people had none or very few of the physical signs the others in the study experienced.
The researchers say that this means people have different abilities to enjoy music and that “there are people who specifically can’t enjoy music at all”, study author Josep Marco-Pallares of the University of Barcelona in Spain told Live Science.
To study the condition further, another group of scientists, at Columbia University, US, researched brain activities. They found that the key is the blood flow (血流量) to the reward system in the brain.
“People who got less pleasure from music had comparatively lower blood flow to areas involved in the reward system of the brain when listening to music,” reported the Daily Mail.
The lower blood flow makes it more likely that the brain’s “reward system” will be inactive. Thus, it will release(释放) less of the “pleasure chemical” dopamine (多巴胺). As a result, people get less pleasure from music.
If the research is correct, according to National Public Radio, there are simply people who just don’t get music. They may get pleasure from many things, but a good tune (曲调) isn’t one of them.
【1】What do we know about people with “musical anhedonia”?
A.They usually avoid listening to music.
B.They like to listen to certain types of music.
C.They believe cultural differences are larger than music.
D.They can’t feel the pleasure that music brings to others.
【2】What was the purpose of the study?
A.To learn what music people love most.
B.To learn how music influences people’s emotions.
C.To see whether music works in the same way for all people.
D.To understand the relationship between music and the body.
【3】What happened to the participants when they listened to music?
A.All of them had faster heartbeat and sweated more.
B.People who enjoyed music had more dopamine released.
C.They showed different physical signs as the music changed.
D.People who got less pleasure from music had higher blood flow.
26、Minds work together
"Let's brainstorm together!" You might often hear your teachers ask you to have a group discussion to solve a problem. But is brainstorming really a good way to deal with problems, especially creative ones?
Dutch company WeTransfer conducted (进行) a survey of 20,000 people from 197 countries and regions. Most of the participants have creative jobs. They are writers, musicians, photographers, and podcasters (播客博主). The survey results suggested that brainstorming is largely unhelpful for solving a creative challenge.
"It seems that while working together is important to bring an idea to life, it's not that good for shaping ideas in the first place," said Rob Alderson, WeTransfer's former editor in chief.
If we give people enough time and space to think properly (适当地), they will come up with better ideas, Alderson added. Even Alex Osborn, the father of brainstorming, sees spending time alone to think as part of his own creative process.
However, most companies fail to give their employees (员工) a chance to prepare and form their thoughts. They often have many meetings scheduled, which is a killer of creativity, according to the survey. More than 40 percent of participants see meetings as a barrier (障碍) to good thinking.
Spending time alone to think will help you come up with your own ideas and develop independent thinking. This is important when you're making decisions. Nearly 80 percent of participants in We Transfer's survey say they trust their own instincts (直觉) and research when they consider an idea.
【1】What was the result of the survey?
A.Brainstorming is needed to solve creative problems.
B.Brainstorming destroys people's creativity.
C.People waste too much time brainstorming.
D.Brainstorming isn't good for solving creative challenges.
【2】Alex Osborn probably agrees that ________.
A.working together is important for shaping ideas.
B.spending time alone is good for shaping ideas.
C.everyone has his or her own way to shape ideas.
D.companies should hold meetings for the employees to shape ideas.
【3】What can we learn from paragraph 5?
A.Most employees have no right to speak out.
B.Most companies don't like their employees to think creatively.
C.Meetings are seen as a barrier to creativity.
D.Most people don't like meetings.
【4】Which sentence is right according to the passage?
A.We shouldn't work together at any time.
B.We can only be creative when we are alone.
C.We shouldn't hold meetings.
D.Thinking alone can help us be creative.
27、 Getting electricity has always been a problem for the 173 people living in Nuevo Saposoa, a small village in Peru, South America. However, things went from bad to worse in March 2016 after heavy rains damaged the only power cables(电力电缆)in the area. The villagers were forced to use oil lamps, which are not only expensive but also dangerous because of the harmful gases they produce.
Luckily, researchers at the University of Technology(UT)in Lima, Peru heard about their problem and found a wonderful solution. They made a lamp that can be powered by plants and soil, both of which can be easily found in the Amazonian rainforest where the village lies. The lamp takes energy from a plant growing in a wooden box and uses it to light up an LED light bulb.
While that may sound amazing and even impossible, the science behind the idea is quite simple. As plants create their food(using the sun’s energy, water and chemicals from the soil), they also produce waste which they return to the soil. Tiny animals in the soil eat this waste which produces electrons—the building blocks of electrical energy. The UT team put special sticks inside the soil to capture(获取)the energy and keep it in the lamp’s batteries for later use. The researchers say a single charge can power a 50-watt LED light for two hours-enough time for local villagers to get their evening work done.
The university gave ten Plant Lamps to the villagers of Nuevo Saposoa in October 2016. So far, they have been a huge success! Elmer Ramirez, the UT professor who invented the lamp, believes the Plant Lamp can help improve the lives of many people, especially small rainforest communities, 42% of whom have no electricity.
