24、 Is there anything that you do to cheer yourself up and “heal(治愈)” your mind when you’re feeling down? Many of us have our own ways to make ourselves feel better. This is referred to as “self-care”.
This idea originated(起源) in Japan. It refers to any activity that can soothe one’s nerves(平缓心绪), clear one’s mind, and comfort a troubled heart, according to China News Service. It was first used to describe the music of Japanese songwriter Ryuichi Sakamoto(坂本龙一)in 1999.
Self-care is now booming(急速发展)in China as well. One of the most popular activities is “healing travel”. According to Caissa Touristic, a Beijing-based travel agency, more Chinese tourists are going on meditation(冥想)or yoga retreats in places like Japan, Bali and India.
By taking these trips, people can learn more about local culture and the way people in these countries live. Without a tour guide or detailed plan, they allow their bodies and minds to relax as they forget about daily stresses and noisy surroundings(周遭事物)back home.
Having a pet can also help to improve our mental health. Research has shown that pets and humans can heal each other, NPR reported. Strong human-to-animal bonds(情感联系)make both pets and their owners happier and healthier. Chinese dog and cat owners spent over 5,000 yuan per pet on average in 2018. China’s pet industry now has a value of over 170 billion yuan, Xinhua reported.
More people are seeking out self-care activities simply because they can finally afford to, particularly China’s growing middleclass(中产阶级). With fewer financial(财务的)worries, they can slow down and take a closer look at their own inner(内心的)world, the Paper noted.

25、In early November of 1503, during Christopher Columbus’ fourth and final trip to America, his ship was seriously damaged in a storm. Columbus and his men had to live on a small island for several months while they tried to repair their ship and return to Spain.
At first, the local people on the island were very kind to the European visitors, giving them all the food and clothes they needed to survive. However, as the months passed, the local people became more and more unhappy with their guests, who were tricking and stealing from them. Finally the locals decided to stop helping. Without food or any way to leave the island, Columbus’ group was soon in serious trouble.
Luckily for Columbus, he had a book about the stars and planets on his ship. It described the movements of all the objects in the night sky. The book, written by a well-known German scientist, said there would be a total lunar eclipse (月食) on the evening of February 29, 1504 and how long it would last.
Columbus worked out the difference in time between Germany and North America. He then had a meeting with the local leaders just before the eclipse would take place. In this meeting, Columbus told them his god was angry because the local people were no longer giving food. So his god would take away the moon to punish them. At the moment Columbus finished talking, just as he had planned, the moon began disappearing.
The local leaders grew frightened and quickly agreed to provide Columbus with food and anything else he wanted. But first, Columbus’ god had to return the moon. Columbus told them he would have to discuss the idea with his god on his ship. Knowing the moon would stay completely hidden for about 48 minutes, Columbus returned just before the moon began to reappear. From that day on, until they finally
left, Columbus and his men no longer had any trouble getting the food they needed.

27、Yi Xiaojing, 21, a student at Guangdong University, has a big family – her two parents, a younger brother and two younger sisters. Lin took her role as the “big sister” seriously. When her first sister was born, Yi took turns with her mom holding the baby late into the night. “I almost did everything that was supposed to be a parent’s job, but I felt proud of myself,” she said.
Not all Yi’s classmates shared her experiences because of the family planning policy (政策), a law that was carried out in China about forty years ago. But the situation is about to change. A new policy made on October 29 said all couples can now have two children.
The new policy is expected to help raise the population of China. Recently, China has been facing an aging population and labor shortages because of the low birth rate (比率).
The two-child policy may also be the gift for every only child. Researchers found that growing up with a brother or sister can have good influence on one’s mental health.
“Brothers and sisters do matter in unique ways. They give kids something that parents don’t.” Laura Walker, a professor from Beijing University, told China Daily. She noted that having a brother or a sister protects teenagers against loneliness, fear and so on.
Liu Hao, 20, from Shenzhen University, has a 2-year-younger sister. When her sister disagreed with parents over choosing a college major, she helped her to communicate with parents. “If necessary, I would always have her back,” said Liu. “The best part of having a sister is that you have a partner, friend and supporter throughout your life.”
But children with brothers or sisters also have to learn to understand and look after each other, said Laura.
