  • 24、Last week the manager of an old shop received a letter. As he was very busy, the letter lay on his desk till teatime. Then he opened it and $100 fell out onto his desk. Together with it was a short letter. It reads:

    Dear Sir,

In 1935 I got engaged(订婚), but unluckily I lost my job. At that time a lot of people were out of work. Six months later I got a job again, but of course I was very short of money.

I came to your shop to buy a wedding ring(结婚戒指). The girl took out some rings for me to look at, but she was called away for a moment, and I put one of the rings in my pocket. When she came back, I said I did not know the size of my girlfriend’s finger. So I left the shop without paying.

    My wife died a short while ago and I had felt ashamed(羞愧的) for not paying for the ring all these years. At that time the ring cost <span class="MathJax_Preview" style="color: inherit; display: none;"></span><span class="MathJax" id="MathJax-Element-3-Frame" tabindex="0" data-mathml="<math xmlns=&quot;http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML&quot;><mn>20</mn><mo>,</mo><mi>s</mi><mi>o</mi><mi>I</mi><mi>t</mi><mi>h</mi><mi>i</mi><mi>n</mi><mi>k</mi><mi>t</mi><mi>h</mi><mi>e</mi><mi>r</mi><mi>i</mi><mi>n</mi><mi>g</mi><mi>c</mi><mi>o</mi><mi>s</mi><mi>t</mi><mi>a</mi><mi>b</mi><mi>o</mi><mi>u</mi><mi>t</mi></math>" role="presentation" style="position: relative;"><nobr aria-hidden="true"><span class="math" id="MathJax-Span-57" style="width: 14.72em; display: inline-block;"><span style="display: inline-block; position: relative; width: 12.685em; height: 0px; font-size: 116%;"><span style="position: absolute; clip: rect(1.338em 1012.65em 2.606em -1000em); top: -2.217em; left: 0em;"><span class="mrow" id="MathJax-Span-58"><span class="mn" id="MathJax-Span-59" style="font-family: MathJax_Main;">20</span><span class="mo" id="MathJax-Span-60" style="font-family: MathJax_Main;">,</span><span class="mi" id="MathJax-Span-61" style="font-family: MathJax_Math-italic; padding-left: 0.167em;">s</span><span class="mi" id="MathJax-Span-62" style="font-family: MathJax_Math-italic;">o</span><span class="mi" id="MathJax-Span-63" style="font-family: MathJax_Math-italic;">I<span style="display: inline-block; overflow: hidden; height: 1px; width: 0.064em;"></span></span><span class="mi" id="MathJax-Span-64" style="font-family: MathJax_Math-italic;">t</span><span class="mi" id="MathJax-Span-65" style="font-family: MathJax_Math-italic;">h</span><span class="mi" id="MathJax-Span-66" style="font-family: MathJax_Math-italic;">i</span><span class="mi" id="MathJax-Span-67" style="font-family: MathJax_Math-italic;">n</span><span class="mi" id="MathJax-Span-68" style="font-family: MathJax_Math-italic;">k</span><span class="mi" id="MathJax-Span-69" style="font-family: MathJax_Math-italic;">t</span><span class="mi" id="MathJax-Span-70" style="font-family: MathJax_Math-italic;">h</span><span class="mi" id="MathJax-Span-71" style="font-family: MathJax_Math-italic;">e</span><span class="mi" id="MathJax-Span-72" style="font-family: MathJax_Math-italic;">r</span><span class="mi" id="MathJax-Span-73" style="font-family: MathJax_Math-italic;">i</span><span class="mi" id="MathJax-Span-74" style="font-family: MathJax_Math-italic;">n</span><span class="mi" id="MathJax-Span-75" style="font-family: MathJax_Math-italic;">g<span style="display: inline-block; overflow: hidden; height: 1px; width: 0.003em;"></span></span><span class="mi" id="MathJax-Span-76" style="font-family: MathJax_Math-italic;">c</span><span class="mi" id="MathJax-Span-77" style="font-family: MathJax_Math-italic;">o</span><span class="mi" id="MathJax-Span-78" style="font-family: MathJax_Math-italic;">s</span><span class="mi" id="MathJax-Span-79" style="font-family: MathJax_Math-italic;">t</span><span class="mi" id="MathJax-Span-80" style="font-family: MathJax_Math-italic;">a</span><span class="mi" id="MathJax-Span-81" style="font-family: MathJax_Math-italic;">b</span><span class="mi" id="MathJax-Span-82" style="font-family: MathJax_Math-italic;">o</span><span class="mi" id="MathJax-Span-83" style="font-family: MathJax_Math-italic;">u</span><span class="mi" id="MathJax-Span-84" style="font-family: MathJax_Math-italic;">t</span></span><span style="display: inline-block; width: 0px; height: 2.217em;"></span></span></span><span style="display: inline-block; overflow: hidden; vertical-align: -0.309em; border-left-width: 0px; border-left-style: solid; width: 0px; height: 1.186em;"></span></span></nobr><span class="MJX_Assistive_MathML" role="presentation"><math xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><mn>20</mn><mo>,</mo><mi>s</mi><mi>o</mi><mi>I</mi><mi>t</mi><mi>h</mi><mi>i</mi><mi>n</mi><mi>k</mi><mi>t</mi><mi>h</mi><mi>e</mi><mi>r</mi><mi>i</mi><mi>n</mi><mi>g</mi><mi>c</mi><mi>o</mi><mi>s</mi><mi>t</mi><mi>a</mi><mi>b</mi><mi>o</mi><mi>u</mi><mi>t</mi></math></span></span><script type="math/tex" id="MathJax-Element-3">20, so I think the ring cost about </script>100 now, and I am sending you the money.

  • 25、Yang Nan, 17, was happy to move to her new home in a northern area of Beijing. She was told that her neighborhood used to be farmland planted with vegetables, corn and wheat. But looking at the new road, beautiful park and supermarkets, Yang couldn't see any sign that food was once grown there.

Yang is not alone. In recent years, many Chinese people have moved into new houses in country areas. Tall buildings have been built everywhere in the suburbs. The crops and fruit trees are no more. But these changes have caused problems too, warns Gan Zang chun, an official at the Ministry of Land and Resources (国土资源部).

"Chinese cities are growing fast. This has made the area for farmland much smaller. This is really bad for the country's ability to grow food, not to mention the lives of farmers," said Gan last Monday.

The country needs farmland to grow food for the people of China. But the recent rise in house prices has made selling land a good business. A lot of land has been used to build new houses for sale.

Pollution, which makes land useless, is another reason for the big drop in China's farmland. About 2.67 million square kilometers of land in China have been polluted and turned into desert.

The government wants China to have at least 120 million hectares(公顷) of farmland. But there are only about 121.8 million hectares left. "It will be really difficult to reach the goal," Gan said. He said that the government would fight illegal land use and stop farmland from becoming desert.

【1】The article seems to tell us that .

    A. farmland is in danger

    B. countrysides are turned into towns

    C. farmland has been sold

    D. Chinese cities are grown fast

【2】From what Gan Zangchun said, he is worrying about .

    A. China's development

    B. land and resources

    C. Chinese people's life

    D. illegal land use

【3】What size of the land have been polluted and turned into desert?

    A. 120 million hectares.

    B. 121.8 million hectares.

    C. 2.67 million square kilometers.

    D. Millions of square kilometers.

  • 26、Different weather makes people feel different. It influences(影响) health, intelligence(智力) and feelings.

In August, it is very hot and wet in the southern part of the United States. People there have heart trouble and other kinds of health problems during this month. In the Northeast and the Middle-West, it is very hot at some times and very cold at other times. People in these states have more heart trouble after the weather changes in February or March.

The weather can also influence intelligence. For example, in a 1983 report by scientists, IQ of a group of students was very high when a very strong wind came, but after the strong wind, their IQ was 10% lower. The wind can help people have more intelligence. Very hot weather, on the other hand, can make it lower. Students in many schools of the United States often get worse on exams in the hot months of the year(July and August).

Weather also has a strong influence on peoples feelings. Winter may be a bad time for thin people. They usually feel cold during these months. They might feel unhappy during cold weather. But fat people may have a hard time in hot summer. At about 18, people become stronger.

Low air pressure(气压) may make people forgetful. People leave more bags on buses and in shops on low-pressure days. People feel best at a temperature of about 18.

Are you feeling sad, tired, forgetful or unhappy today? It may be the weather’s problem.

【1】____________ can cause problems on health.

    A. Hot and wet weather B. A strong wind

    C. Warm weather   D. Low air

2A report shows that people may have more intelligence when __________ comes.

    A. rain B. a strong wind

    C. very hot weather   D. low air pressure

【3】According to(根据) the writer, fat people may feel bad in _____________ weather.

    A. cold B. cool   C. warm   D. hot

4The writer wants to tell us that ______________.

    A. hot and cold weather influence all people in the same way

    B. weather influences people’s behavior

    C. IQ improves when weather changes

    D. people feel good on low pressure days

5The best title for this passage is _____________.

    A. Hot Weather Causes Health Problems

    B. Different Weather Makes People Feel Bad

    C. Weather Influence Feelings

    D. Weather Influences Health, Intelligence and Feelings

  • 27、As a young boy, I sometimes traveled the country roads with my dad. He was a rural mail carrier. Driving through the countryside was always an adventure: There were animals to see, people to visit, and especially chocolate cookies if you knew where to stop, and Dad did.

One lady had no mailbox, so Dad took the mail into her house every day because she was nearly blind. Once inside, he read her mail and helped her pay her bills.

Mailboxes were sometimes used for other things. One note left in a mailbox read, "Nat, take these eggs to Marian. She’s baking a cake and doesn’t have any eggs. "A young girl wrote letters but had no stamps, so Dad paid for the stamps. One businessman used to leave large amounts of cash in his mailbox for Dad to take to the bank.

Later, father died. As I drove home, I noticed two green and red mailboxes made by father were still on each side of Main Street. Each box had a long narrow hole at the top with white lettering: SANTA CLAUS, NORTH POLE. For years children had dropped letters to Santa through those holes.

When I saw Frank Townsend, Dad's postmaster and great friend for many years. He asked, " What are we going to do about the letters this Christmas?"

    “The letters?”

    “I guess you never knew.”

    "Knew what?”

Remember, when you were a kid and you used to put your letters to Santa in those green and red boxes on Main Street? It was your dad who answered all those letters every year.”

I just sat there with tears in my eyes. It wasn’t hard for me to imagine Dad sitting at the old table in our basement reading those letters and answering each one. I have since spoken with several of the people who received Christmas letters during their childhood, and they told me how amazed they were that Santa had known so much about their homes and families.

For me, just knowing that story about my father was the gift of a lifetime.

1It can be inferred (推断) from the passage that the writer regarded his travels with Dad as________.

    A. great chances to help other people B. happy occasions to play with animals

    C. exciting experiences with a lot of fun D. good opportunities to enjoy chocolate cookies 9)

2The writer provides the detail about the businessman to show that

    A. Dad had a strong sense of duty B. Dad was an honest and dependable man

    C. Dad had a strong sense of respect D. Dad was a kind and generous man

3What surprised the children most when they received letters in reply from Santa Claus every year?

    A. Santa Claus lived alone in the cold North Pole.

    B. Santa Claus answered all their letters every year.

    C. Santa Claus had unique(独一无二的) mailboxes for the children

    D. Santa Claus had so much information about their families
