24、In some science fiction movies, evil robots refuse to die, no matter how hard people fight back.
Now science fiction has become science fact. For the first time, scientists have made a robot that can take a beating (挨打) and keep on going. Scientists from Cornell University made the robot, which looks like a spider with four legs.
Until now, even the most advanced (先进的) robot was almost certain to break down when it was damaged. That is because its computer inside simply doesn’t know how to make the machine work after its shape has changed.
To deal with this problem, the scientists put eight motors (发动机) and two sensors (传感器) that read how the machine is working. They all give signals to the machine’s software. Using this information, the computer can then figure out the machine’s shape at any moment.
The new technology is a big advance in robot-making, scientists say, and it’s far from scary. It may someday help scientists create better artificial (假的) arms and legs and give new freedom to people who losethem. It might also help scientists understand how people and animals figure out their own sense of place in space.
“It has been difficult to design robots that can work well when the environment changes or when it’s damaged,” says Olaf Sporns of Indiana University in US. “With this work, we are nearer to solving this problem.”

26、 These days, short videos have got millions of views online. Many people create short videos on popular video apps like Douyin and Kuaishou. You can even add music and special effects to your videos. The videos are 15 seconds to a few minutes long. They show people doing activities like cooking, exercising and singing.
Teenagers especially enjoy these videos. More than 50 percent of students in Grade 7 and Grade 8 said they enjoyed watching these short videos. About 47 percent have posted their own videos, according to a recent report.
The videos let teenagers see funny and exciting things they wouldn’t usually see. Many teenagers like to share the fun things they do with others as well. For example, a 12-year-old user named Xiao Qianyu has posted videos showing her learning jazz dance. This has won her many fans.
However, the videos can also cause trouble. Some students spend too much time watching them and not enough time studying. Some videos have vulgar content that is not good for teenagers.

27、 It is the second-brightest object in our night sky after the moon. It is one of man's greatest scientific achievements. It's the International Space Station(ISS)that orbits(绕……运行)Earth.
Nov. 20 marks the station's 20th birthday. In 1998, the first piece of the ISS was sent into space. Since then, 230 people from 18 countries have visited it.
Five space agencies(空间站)—those of the United States, Russia, Canada, Europe and Japan—worked together to build it. Weighing about 450 tons, it contains many different parts, including labs and solar panels(太阳能板)
Generally, the ISS holds three to six people at one time. Astronauts living there work on a lot of different science projects. The ISS has hosted over 1,500 such projects, according to NASA.
But the station is becoming older. In 2011, Russia announced that the ISS will not be used in 2020 in order to prevent it from becoming dangerous "space junk". But the US later said it would use repairs to make its service life longer(to 2025), the International Business Times reported.
The ISS costs $3-4 billion(21-28 billion yuan)each year. Many have argued that this money could be better spent improving conditions on Earth.
In February, US President Donald Trump announced plans to end support for the ISS by 2025.The US will use its money for other projects, like next-generation rockets and deep-space missions. The Washington Post reported.
What will happen to the ISS after 2025 is unknown. "There are lots of uses," former(前)astronaut Jeffrey Hoffman told NBC News. "Other ISS partners could continue scientific experiments on it. Private companies could turn it into a space hotel."
