二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、What’s your favorite kind of film? For many people who love being terrified, or scared out of their wits, that answer will be horror. It seems that scary movies have a way of drawing a lot of people in and suit their taste. But just why do people enjoy watching these terrifying films?

First of all, being scared can give us a rush of adrenaline (肾上腺素). The heart starts pumping, making these films exhilarating. But the fact that you’re actually at home safe on the sofa makes the experience of being frightened all the more enjoyable because what’s happening to the characters on the screen is far removed from your experience of being in your living room eating popcorn. It feels more thrilling.

Coltan Scrivner, a PhD candidate in the Department of Comparative Human Development at the University of Chicago, argues that people who watch horror films learn how to regulate their anxiety. A study that he coauthored found that horror fans exhibited greater resilience (韧性) during the early stages on the COVID-19 pandemic than those who didn’t.

Also, some horror fans think they could survive the events on screen. That gives those viewers a sense of superiority. We often tease the typical image of horror films. Why do they try to escape the masked killer by running upstairs and hiding themselves? The characters often make terrible decisions that lead to their deaths—decisions we as viewers believe we wouldn’t make.

So, whether it’s to help people regulate their anxiety, to be thrilled by getting scared, or to feel superior teasing the decisions of the characters, there are many reasons people love watching horror films and if they really scare you, maybe it’s best to watch them with the lights on.

  • 23、There are two days that set you on your path in life: the day you’re born, and the day you realize why you were born.

Growing up south of Chicago in Harvey, Illinois, most people just had their heads down trying to make it from point A to point B. I was the same way, just going with the flow. I played basketball in high school because I was good at it and because other people thought I should until I discovered my talent.

I give up basketball and started doing speeches. It wasn’t a popular decision but my grandfather told me to do what made me happy. I fell in love with comedy and performing. And when I discovered the passion, I realized why I was born.

I knew I had something to offer —I knew that not only am I powerful, but I can make a difference.

I realized a long time ago that my dream is not to be famous or rich. My talent is to entertain. But it’s more than that. I have the chance to reach people, to brighten days, to bring laughter and positive energy into lives and inspire. And I am grateful for it.

Acting putting myself out there and having doors closed on me time and time again has taught me a lot about myself. I have learned to trust what I have to offer the world over momentary doubt. I’ve learned to put my faith over my feelings. And I've grown a tough skin. More importantly, I have learned there is a long way towards our goals and that when we put our talents and passion to work, we determine our value.

Like a lot of places across the country, there’s poverty, crime, violence and unemployment in Harvey. And growing up there, a lot of people have tragically low expectations for life. But I know that with the right opportunity and with help along the way, everyone can find their passion and go after it. My life is proof.

【1】What was the author born to do according to the text?

    A.Be a basketball player.

    B.Act and perform.

    C.Make speeches.

    D.Teach people.

【2】What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to?

    A.Chance.

    B.Energy.

    C.Days.

    D.Laughter.

【3】What is the author’s purpose of writing this text?

A.To help others find their talents.

B.To prove his decision was right.

C.To inspire people to follow their dreams.

D.To encourage people to set a goal.

【4】What can be the best tile for the text?

    A.Success Lies in Hard Work.

B.How to Achieve the Dream Is Important.

C.The Two Important Days in Life.

D.The Day I Realized What I Was Born to Do.

  • 24、If you ever get the impression that your dog can "tell" whether you look delighted or annoyed, you may be onto something. Dogs may indeed be able to distinguish between happy and angry human faces, according to a new study

Researchers trained a group of 11 dogs to distinguish between images(图像)of the same person making either a happy or an angry face. During the training stage, each dog was shown only the upper half or the lower half of the person's face. The researchers then tested the dogs' ability to distinguish between human facial expressions by showing them the other half of the person's face on images totally different from the ones used in training. The researchers found that the dogs were able to pick the angry or happy face by touching a picture of it with their noses more often than one would expect by random chance.

The study showed the animals had figured out how to apply what they learned about human faces during training to new faces in the testing stage. "We can rule out that the dogs simply distinguish between the pictures based on a simple cue, such as the sight of teeth," said study author Corsin Muller. "Instead, our results suggest that the successful dogs realized that a smiling mouth means the same thing as smiling eyes, and the same rule applies to an angry mouth having the same meaning as angry eyes."

"With our study, we think we can now confidently conclude that at least some dogs can distinguish human facial expressions," Muller told Live Science.

At this point, it is not clear why dogs seem to be equipped with the ability to recognize different facial expressions in humans. "To us, the most likely explanation appears to be that the basis lies in their living with humans, which gives them a lot of exposure to human facial expressions and this exposure has provided them with many chances to learn to distinguish between them." Muller said.

【1】The new study focused on whether dogs can_________.

    A.distinguish shapes

    B.make sense of human faces

    C.feel happy or angry

    D.communicate with each other

【2】What can we learn about the study from paragraph 2?

A.Researchers tested the dogs in random order.

B.Diverse methods were adopted during training.

C.Pictures used in the two stages were different

D.The dogs were photographed before the lest.

【3】What is the last paragraph mainly about?

    A.A suggestion for future studies.

B.A possible reason for the study findings.

C.A major limitation of the study

D.An explanation of the research method.

【4】In which section is the text most likely to be found in a newspaper ?

    A.Entertainment

    B.Economy

    C.Science

    D.Nature

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main points of the passage in no more than 60 words. Use your own words as far as possible.

Things to Do After You Study

Many students study with little thought about what comes after their study session. But what you do after studying could have an effect on how well you learn and remember new information. Actually, there are two no-cost ways that can help you improve your learning: wakeful rest and sleep.

When many students finish studying, they often go straight to another activity. Perhaps they look at their phone or computer. They might even play a video game or watch television. But research suggests that resting after you study may help you remember what you studied.

The basic idea is this: by reducing your activity after the study session, your brain gets a chance to rest. Resting is difficult when you have too much stimulation from electronic devices, games, lights and so on. Many studies have explored the benefits of resting after learning — what is called “wakeful rest.” A 2019 study found that both young and older adults were able to better remember, or recollect, information from prose passages after doing wakeful rest. The findings appeared in Neuroscience Letters. If you want to give “wakeful rest” a try, here are a few simple things to do: Rest quietly for five to ten minutes. Do not look at your phone, read stories or play games. Just limit the amount of stimulation you get. It is really that easy!

In addition to wakeful rest, sleep is also important for learning. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School notes that sleep helps people to learn. A report on the school’s website explains that “a sleep-deprived person cannot focus attention optimally and therefore cannot learn efficiently.” It also says, “sleep itself has a role in the consolidation of memory, which is essential for learning new information.”

Now you have two suggestions for how to learn new information. Try to get some “wakeful rest” after a study session. Then try to get a good night’s sleep. That’s it — a simple, no-cost way to help you remember what you learn.
