二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、It’s really a tough job for automakers doing marketing and sales in China, where competition is acute and customers have little loyalty. They have tried a range of tricks in recent years.

But there should be a moral bottom line. Unfortunately, a Buick dealership used the tragedy of a two-month-old infant to advertise its cars last week on Weibo Micro blog. And Hyundai Motor followed suit.

On March 4, an SUV was stolen with the infant left inside alone in the northeastern city of Changchun. The news spread widely on Weibo after the baby’s father called the local police and radio station for help. The next day it was revealed that the infant was choked to death and buried in snow by the thief. The online community expressed its deeply felt sympathy and condolences.

The Buick dealership posted a photo of the baby and two of its cars on its official Weibo account to advertise its GPS system that can locate the stolen car. “A few thoughts on the Changchun stolen car and baby incident: when buying a car it's entirely OK to choose a brand with advanced technology,” said the post. Though the post was made before tragic fate of the infant was known, the action generated a storm of outrage on Weibo. Some online commentators said it is “marketing at the cost of lives” and “extremely despicable.”

Worse was the post on Hyundai's off icial Weibo account that advertised the anti - theft system on its new SUV Santa Fe, an entry made after the child was known to have died. The action also enraged micro bloggers.

Both posts were soon deleted. The Buick dealership made an apology on Weibo to the family of the victim and the public. But screenshots saved by users continued to be posted and the negative impact on both brands persists.

The two brands probably didn’t expect such a firestorm of fury from the Internet community, but they really made a big mistake sinking below the moral bottom line. They certainly ruined their own brand images.

The Chinese have the same proverb as the English language a little leak will sink a great ship. It takes decades to build the great ship of a respectable brand but it can take just a moment of negligence to make it fail completely.

For those in corporate marketing, two lessons should be learned: first, be careful in the era of social media when one wrong can be easily magnified and have disastrous impacts in just a few clicks.

Second and more importantly, think with your brain and heart. Never break the moral bonds of respect for human life and sympathy for our fellow man.

【1】Who is to blame for the tragedy of Changchun infant according to the passage?

    A.The baby’s father   B.Buick and Hyundai dealership

    C.Weibo D.Not clear

【2】Which of the following statements is correct?

A.The missing infant was found alive in the stolen car.

B.Micro blog marketing of tragic infant death fuels firestorm of criticism.

C.People can’t see the two posts any more because they were deleted.

D.The two car brands mentioned in the passage spoiled their own reputation by selling the stolen car.

【3】What does the underlined word “despicable” in paragraph 4 mean?

    A.Immoral   B.Important

    C.Distinguished   D.Considerable

【4】The reason why Hyundai’s post was worse than Buick’s is that _________.

A.Hyundai dealership didn’t make an apology on Weibo

B.Buick dealership expressed its deeply sympathy and condolences

C.Hyundai’s post was made after people knew the infant had died

D.Buick’s car was more advanced on its GPS system

【5】In the last paragraph, the author encourages people _____________.

A.not to sink below the moral bottom line

B.not to sympathize our fellow man

C.to think twice before making decision

D.to magnify the mistakes people make

  • 22、Selfie

Social media and the mobile web have given rise to a strange phenomenon called the selfie. But not everyone is familiar with the term, so here’s a brief definition. 【1】 Everyone takes selfies, but the younger crowd seems to be especially involved in the trend. Some selfies are extreme close-ups, other show part of an arm held straight outward and a few of the great ones even feature the subject standing in front of a bathroom mirror so that they can get a full body shot of their reflection. 【2】 Since social media is the driving force of most selfie activity, younger kids interested in staying connected to their friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, etc. are more active in sharing selfies on a regular basis.

Who knows what kind of psychological factors drive any specific person to take a selfies and upload it to a social networking site. 【3】

Here's one. Not only are young people plugged into the web at all times, but they also have more self-esteem issues—and many of these teens or college kids might upload selfies to deal with their own self-consciousness. 【4】 When you feel good or look good about yourself, it's far too easy to reach for you phone and document it all through one or several selfies. Kids who are connected on a social network to someone they admire may be more driven to upload attractive selfies as a way to seek attention, especially if they're too shy to do it in person.

Besides, there are people who are bored at work, bored at school, etc. So they will take selfies because they have nothing else better to do. Last but not least, social media is about being social! If that means uploading as many selfies as possible, then so be it. 【5】 They just do it because they like to do it, it's fun, and it’s a cool way to sort of document your own life.

A.Some people don't need a real reason to do it.

B.There's so much more meaning behind why we do it.

C.It's about getting attention from as many people as possible.

D.There are lots of selfie styles, and these are some of the most common.

E.Selfie is a picture of yourself, usually shared on any social network website.

F.What's more, it's human nature to want to show off your own great achievement.

G.Everyone's own situation is different, but here are some of the most common theories.

  • 23、The Chinese manned submersible(潜水器) Fendouzhe, over 96.5 percent of whose core components have been independently developed by China, reached one of the deepest spots on the planet, a dizzying and dark depth of 10,909 meters.

Extreme water pressure is the first challenge that requires dealing with during the exploration. At 10,000 meters down in the ocean, the submersible has to stand about 1,100 atmospheres of pressure, equal to 2,000 elephants stepping on a person’s back. As the solid “armour (盔甲)”,the manned cabin is a safety guarantee for humans to reach down to 10,000 meters deep in the ocean. To overcome the technical bottleneck, the Chinese researchers developed a new material-Ti62A, successfully solving problems of the strength and toughness of the manned cabin.

To avoid risks of crashes in the dark deep sea with complex terrain(地形),Fendouzhe requires its control system, a smart “brain” to give the exact instructions. Researchers designed a neural network algorithm(神经网络算法), which enables Fendouzhe to travel automatically according to the seabed terrain and locate fixed points. Its control system has reached the international frontier level.

The submersible is equipped with two flexible and strong “arms”. Each 7-joint arm with 6 degrees - of - freedom control and a weight-carrying ability of more than 60 kilograms can cover the sampling basket and its front areas. With the arms, Fendouzhe collected samples of ocean rocks, deep-sea living things and seabed sediments(沉淀物).

The ocean, especially the deep sea, is widely regarded as Earth's final frontier. Deep down in the ocean are unusual creatures, strange environments and impressive geological wonders, yet humanity knows less about the ocean floor than about the far side of the moon. These samples and data collected from the deep ocean can be used for geological and biological research, as well as study the human impact on the planet.

【1】Why is “2000 elephants” mentioned in paragraph 2?

    A.To make the numbers accurate.

    B.To provide a biological explanation.

C.To emphasize the importance of the task.

D.To describe the degree of the pressure vividly.

【2】What can “arms” do according to paragraph 4?

    A.Collect ocean samples.

    B.Land the submersible.

    C.Provide safety guarantee.

    D.Prevent crashes intelligently.

【3】Which of the following has reached the world advanced level ?

    A.The toughness of the cabin.

    B.The ability of weight-carrying.

    C.The method of data-collection.

    D.The technology of control system.

【4】Why do people research the deep ocean according to the last paragraph?

A.It is more complex than the moon.

B.It is seriously affected by humans.

C.To make sure of the depth of the ocean.

D.To explore the less-known field of the planet.

  • 24、Two new community initiatives offering the opportunity to borrow everything from sewing machines to party supplies are aiming to reduce waste and consumption.

Tools n Things Library in Leederville, Perth is a community library designed to allow community members to get access to the things they might need around the house instead of buying them in a hardware (五金店) store.

“That’s our philosophy — don’t buy, borrow. Many people buy things just for a small task at home, and then they won’t use them for a couple of years,” library volunteer Rex Breheny said.

The project is run by volunteers who founded it in 2019, and after an interruption in 2020 because of the pandemic (大流行病), it has now grown to several hundred members who can come and borrow things twice a week. In a way it is a return to an old tradition of neighbors borrowing each other’s tools and forming connections in the process.

Tools n Things Library is the first of its kind in Perth, and another called Share Shed has just started in Bassendean. Its co-founder Renee McLennan said they wanted to expand beyond tools to all sorts of things that people might use rarely, like camping equipment or entertaining needs.

“We’re doing the kind of equipment you’d use for a party. Instead of everybody buying disposable plates, and cups and things like that, we’ve got quality glasses and cutlery (餐具), as well as decorations that people can use for those events that they might have once a year,” she said.

The Share Shed is being considered as a way to tackle consumer culture. The world cannot continue to support our current level of resource consumption — at present overconsumption means that each year we consume 75 per cent more than the planet can regenerate.

“Borrowing items and shifting our thinking from an ownership to an access model helps to reduce the number of things that are produced and limits waste. At the same time, sharing the things that we use every now and then is a great way of connecting with people who live locally,” Bod Anderson, an officer in Perth said.

    【1】Why were the initiatives launched?

    A.To introduce two new communities.

    B.To advocate consuming fewer resources.

C.To call on people to fight against pandemic.

D.To encourage people to borrow daily necessities.

【2】What do we know about the project of Tools n Things Library?

    A.It is out of use.

    B.It is well received.

    C.It is out of fashion.

    D.It is often interrupted.

【3】What’s an advantage of Share Shed over Tools n Things Library?

    A.Wider options.

    B.Better quality.

    C.Longer duration.

    D.Newer equipment.

【4】What’s Bob Anderson’s attitude to the initiatives?

    A.Doubtful.

    B.Supportive.

    C.Critical.

    D.Objective.
