二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、In the US, there is an old joke: “Tie an Italian’s hands behind his back and he’ll be speechless.” However, Susan Goldin-Meadowin, author of the book Thinking With Your Hands, has a rather different view.

“Almost everyone gestures, not just Italians,” she laughs. “Conference interpreters gesture in their little rooms, though no one is looking at them. Even people born blind gesture when they speak, including to each other. In the TV series, The Crown, Lady Diana is warned that her hands may reveal her real emotions, which could be dangerous and that they have to be tied together so she can learn to speak without gesturing.”

The gesture under discussion is the so-called “co-speech gesture”. It is much more abstract than such symbolic gestures like a finger over the lips for “Silence!” or raising a finger to mean “Great!”. Like words, such symbolic gestures are fixed within cultures (but vary between them). Instead, co-speech gestures that accompany speech are another channel of information and emotion. For example, subjects are asked to watch a film in which a cat runs, but they are told to lie and say it jumped. They may do so in words—while their hands will make a running movement. The co-speech gesture is not sign languages, either. They have clearly defined words and grammar.

And the co-speech gestures have great potential for practical applications. For example, some students who fail at a tricky mathematics problem may gesture in a way that indicates they understand it. Then they should be taught differently from the ones whose gestures suggest that they really understand it.

“Children with language delays caused by brain injuries at or around birth are likely to catch up verbally by the age of about 30 months, if they gesture as much as their peers (同龄人). Those who gesture less are more likely to need intensive early intervention,” Susan Goldin-Meadowin adds. “Co-speech gesturing is not just about a lack of control. It is about thinking and communication, and is an aid to both.”

【1】What does Susan Goldin-Meadowin really want to tell us in paragraph 2?

A.Lady Diana is probably an emotional woman.

B.Italians are very talkative and gesture too much.

C.It is unnatural for the blind to gesture to each other.

D.Co-speech gestures are used by all of us unknowingly.

【2】What can we say about sign languages?

A.They are as abstract as co-speech gestures.

B.They have clearly defined words and grammar.

C.They are usually learned by human beings naturally.

D.They vary from culture to culture and person to person.

【3】What does the author suggest teachers do in the text?

    A.Put enough trust in students.

B.Encourage students to tell the truth.

    C.Observe the co-speech gestures carefully.

D.Teach the tricky problems in different ways.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

A.Co-speech Gestures Are a Vital Part of Communication

B.Symbolic Gestures Differ Greatly From Co-speech Gestures

C.Co-speech Gestures Are More Difficult Than Sign Languages

D.Symbolic Gestures Have Great Potential for Practical Applications

  • 22、Studies show that people who are happy—truly happy—have deep connections with those around them.【1】They actively try hard to improve these relationships and build quality relationships with others.

Those connections and relationships that we build and that we attempt to develop, create experiences in our lives. Some experiences will be poor, but it is possible for us to create meaningful experiencesexperiences that allow us to just be. Studies show that when we create meaningful experiences, we allow ourselves time to relax, to build connections, and to

    become our best selves.【2】

If we want to create meaningful experiences, we need to learn how to create these moments in our lives. Instead of taking many classes and workshops to teach us how to build connections with others, we should experience beSHOPs, which means we learn by being, by observing, and by becoming.

【3】It helps define us and motivates us to do good, to step outside of our comfort zone, and to be better. A few of these values that we need to create meaningful experiences include:

•Compassion (同情): Compassion has been thoroughly studied and proven to be a natural human response【4】When you are compassionate, you don't have to think twice about helping others.

•Gratitude: Showing sincere appreciation to others helps establish strong feelings of gratitude, and build strong connections. You should express appreciation for all the things in your life and make gratefulness just a part of who you are,

•Willingness to learn:【5】 Many individuals will find themselves stuck in their own world and never take a step outside of their comfort zones. When we have that desire to learn, to explore, and our curiosity is continually peaked, then we are more likely to have these meaningful experiences.

Remember, true happiness, and meaningful experiences are not things you can learn from a series of worksheets and lectures. It is about being.

A.There is so much in the world around us,

B.“To be” requires key values that shape us,

C.It means service, kindness and love for others.

D.Within the communities, you can work on developing these values.

E.Working with others will help you experience many aspects of life.

F.Creating these experiences is a vital step in the process to achieve full happiness.

G.They lay stress on the relationships with their family, friends, colleagues and even strangers.

  • 23、On a recent visit to an exhibition, I broke what is usually a museum’s most fixed rule. I touched the art. No shocked guards stopped me or shooed away the many smaller viewers who were doing the same.

This was the Children’s Museum of Manhattan. But unlike many displays for the young, this one, “Inside Art” features works by 11 adults whose résumés include the Jewish Museum, El Museo del Barrio and the Whitney.

The show lets visitors encounter art “not as a child sort of pretending to be an adult,” said Leslie Bushara, the museum’s director, but “running around like a child.” Run around they do. Joiri Minaya’s “Spandex Installation” invites the curious into a brightly printed maze (迷宫). “Up & Around,” a group of large cylinders (圆柱体) made by Yeju & Chat, appeals to museum goers to stand inside each tube and experience bursts of color and pattern.

The new exhibition expands on a museum tradition begun in 2002, when “Art Inside Out” featured the work of the artist Elizabeth Murray. Children played with models of that art but not the art itself. In 2018, “Art, Artists & You” allowed them to work with resident artists, but not to handle the pieces in the show.

“We knew this next exhibit needed to be something kids could physically engage with and aesthetically (审美地) engage with,” said David Rios, the director of “Inside Art”. That means “not just artwork you can crawl through,”Mr. Rios said, “but you’re making art in the same space.”

Mr. Rios wanted children to be exposed to the participating artists’ philosophies and activism. For the exhibition labels, the artists “were challenged to write about their work as if they were explaining it to a 5-year-old,” he said. But if “Inside Art” serves its purpose, the show will start children on an evolving journey.

【1】What makes “Inside Art” different from exhibitions of its kind?

    A.Its artists.

    B.Its customers.

    C.Its theme.

    D.Its location.

【2】What is the author’s purpose of referring to the two exhibitions in paragraph 4?

A.To predict the future of the display.

B.To illustrate the improvement of children’s close exposure to art.

C.To clarify the concept of the exhibition for children.

D.To compare the advantages and disadvantages of various exhibitions.

【3】Why did the artists feel challenged to write the exhibition labels?

A.It’s hard to stop kids running around.

B.It’s urgent to enrich children’s spiritual life.

C.It’s tough to get their thoughts across to children in simple words.

D.It’s significant for the children to participate in the creating process.

【4】Which is the most suitable title for the text?

    A.Having Dialogues with Art

B.Touch Art Just Like an Adult

    C.An Exhibition Just for Children

    D.Interact with Art at a Children’s Museum

  • 24、   My brother and I were like most people, I imagine, who find themselves trying to do the right things for a parent suffering from the symptoms of dementia (痴呆). Though there was useful advice available from various online sources, nothing prepared us for the reality or the effects the symptoms had upon Mum's loving, kind, caring nature.

The greatest shock for me was seeing Mum being violent and aggressive with a carer. At times the aggression was directed at me too and I never really knew what to expect as Mum could go from being a loving Mother to this violent stranger in a flash. It was as though Mum had been possessed at times and all I could do was to constantly attempt to distract her from her fears at any moment.

One of the many challenging aspects of the dementia symptoms is that the sufferer often doesn't know that they're ill. In Mum's case, the main thing was to carry on as though everything was just as it always was. Many were the nights where she'd be convinced that friends and relatives were coming round for a party and she'd rush around setting the table, preparing snacks and getting everything ready until she was exhausted. I got to see first hand just how the anxieties that came with the illness would really stay with her until she fell asleep.

Mum longed for reminders of her early life in Liverpool and once travelling there had become too difficult, we found great comfort in local history books and a DVD about many of the places and landmarks Mum remembered from her childhood.

I learned to go with whatever experience Mum was having. I would always be with her. If I could pass on any guidance for those about to care for a loved one, it is the above I found that really helps.

1How was the writer when her mother suffered dementia?

A.She started to care about her mother's health.

B.She was not prepared mentally at all.

C.She knew nothing about the disease.

D.She doubted the effect of medical care.

2What shocked the writer most according to Para 2?

A.Her mother's longing for her childhood photos.

B.The sudden distinct shift in her mother's temper.

C.Her mother's sufferings from fear and anxiety.

D.Her mother's failing to deal with daily chores.

3Why does the author tell the story of Mum's preparing for a party?

A.To prove her mum is not aware of her illness at all.

B.To explain how to help her mum come over her anxiety.

C.To regret that she failed to help her mum with her problem.

D.To look for a better medical treatment for her mum.

4What may the author suggest to those who have a parent with dementia?

A.Hard work pays off. B.Where there is a will, there is a way.

C.Company is the best medicine. D.Look before you leap.
