二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A Writing Fool

In the seventh grade I realized I was dyslexic, which made it difficult for me to read and spell. I did really badly in my history course, so my mother said to me, “I’ll work with you for a full week. I’m going to show you what you can do if you put in the right amount of effort.” So we did. We worked on history for a full week, an extra hour every day. Then I went to school and failed the test, as always. It was really upsetting.

By the time I got to college I came to know that I couldnt spell no matter how hard I tried. So I would sign up for extra courses. I’d be in registration lines all day. Then I would go around the first day of class and ask each professor: “What’s your policy on misspelling? If he said, “Three misspellings is a fail,” I’d drop it.

Although I was an academic failure, I had a great time. I had many friends and I was always popular. I was a good football player, which was important in those years because I could read my name in the newspaper. I never had a day when I would think, “People dont like me.”

In spite of my obvious weaknesses, I became successful in my career, so much so that people say to me, “So you’ve overcome dyslexia.” No. I dont overcome it. I just learn to compensate for it. Some easy things are hard for me. Most people read 500 words a minute. I only read 200. I try not to dial a phone because I sometimes have to dial three times to get the number right. I owe my successful career to my writing instructor, Ralph Salisbury. He looked past my misspellings and gave   me   encouragement.   So   I   always   feel   confident.   When   I   write   my   books, I’m   seeing everything in my imagination. I write quickly and go like the wind.

The real fear that I have for dyslexic people is not that they have to struggle with their reading skills or that they cant spell correctly, but that they will quit on themselves before they get out of school.

  • 22、Born into poverty on 21 May 1799, Mary Anning had to work hard from a young age. Her parents had 10 children, of whom only two survived childhood --- Mary and her elder brother Joseph. Mary’s own survival was said by her parents to be a wonder. At the age of 15 months, a sudden rainstorm hit the shelter, where Mary, her babysitter, and two children stayed. A lightning strike killed them all except Mary.

She didn’t have formal education and was only taught to read at a Sunday school. Raised in the seaside holiday village of Lyme Regis in Dorset, Mary and Joseph made a living by selling fossils to holidaymakers at their father’s waterfront booth.

Her life changed in 1811 when Joseph noticed bones mixed together with rock. Unknown to them, this was the first ever discovery of an ichthyosaurus ( 鱼 龙 ), a marine lizard from the Triassic period. Anning noted down every find she made, and after failing to find any new fossils for over a year, in 1821 she made her next discovery, digging up three more ichthyosaur skeletons. This was followed two years later by an even more impressive find --- a complete plesiosaur(蛇颈龙). This was so extraordinary that many leading scientists declared it a counterfeit, unwilling to believe that an uneducated 24-year-old could find such remarkable remains. Additionally, society at the time was highly religious and many rejected these discoveries as they conflicted with the teachings of the Bible.

Despite the setback, Anning continued to make more shocking revelations. Anning also dug up fossilized shit, which made experts know the diets of prehistoric creatures. But her biggest find of all was the first complete skeleton of a pterosaur in 1828.

All of Mary Anning’s discoveries helped influence the study of paleontology(古生物学) as scientists began to take an increased interest in fossilized animals and plants. Her work also encouraged people to question the history of the Earth in more detail and encouraged girls and those from poor backgrounds by proving that they could succeed in scientific study, a profession mainly controlled by wealthy upper-class men.

【1】What can we learn about Mary Anning from the first two paragraphs?

A.It was not easy for her to survive.

B.She didn’t experience the lightning strike.

C.She didn’t get basic knowledge about science.

D.It was impossible for her to find a job outside.

【2】What does the underlined word “counterfeit” in Paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Something not needed.

    B.Something not valuable.

    C.Something not authentic.

    D.Something not beneficial.

【3】Anning’s findings of fossilized shit helped ________.

    A.her get international fame

    B.make her become more professional

    C.experts better understand prehistoric creatures

D.convince the leading scientists of her discovery

【4】The last paragraph mainly wants to show ________.

    A.the process of her findings

    B.the significance of her discoveries

    C.the discoveries of fossilized animals

D.the background of her scientific study

  • 23、Matthew Kneale is the award-winning author of fiction and non-fiction, including English passengers, which won the Whitbread Book Award. He shares the books that have changed his life.

The adventures of Tintin by Hergé

As a child I loved the Tintin books — for their adventures, their characters and their stylish illustrations. Though Hergé visited almost none of the faraway places he drew, he captured (捕捉) them perfectly. His images, whether of Peru, Arabia, India or China, stayed with me and later, when I became a keen traveler, Tintin’s destinations were the places that I most wanted to reach. I never saw them all, needless to say, but I got to quite a few.

Stig of the Dump by Clive King

This was another book I loved as a child — the story of a boy who is bored staying with his grandparents, when he runs into Stig, a friendly Stone Age man. When my father read it to my sister and me, I was already fascinated by history and I loved the way the book captured the mystery of our distant, unrecorded past. Its charm stayed with me and much later I spent many a weekend driving around Britain, getting lost on small country roads, looking for prehistoric tombs and stone circles. There’s something breathtaking about these places, which are often in extraordinary locations.

I Claudius / Claudius the God by Robert Graves

When I first saw Rome, aged eight, I was amazed by the city’s layers of history and this same magic led me to come and live here, 20 years ago. I first read I Claudius as a teenager and was attracted by the story of friendly, stammering, ridiculed Claudius, who grows up in the vipers’ nest of Rome’s imperial family and who, against all the odds, as his relatives destroy one another, survives and rises. Graves, a fine scholar, has a talent for making the past spring to life, in all its nastiness and wonder. In my own writing, fiction and non-fiction, I’ve tried to follow his example — to make history shocked, as it should do.

【1】What can we learn from the passage?

    A.Rich travel experience shaped Herge.

B.Stig of the Dump is adapted from a true story.

C.Matthew showed great interest in history as a child.

D.The close family relationship helped Claudius’ growth.

【2】Why does Matthew share the three books?

A.Because they manage to bring the past back to life.

B.Because they are great representatives of non-fictions.

C.Because they are known for their stylish illustrations.

D.Because they make a great difference to Matthew’s life.

【3】Where can we probably find the passage?

    A.In a magazine.

    B.In a history book.

    C.In a travel brochure.

    D.In an advertisement.

  • 24、In some ways, learning to program a computer is similar to learning a new language. It requires learning new symbols and terms, which must be organized correctly to instruct the computer what to do. Computer code must also be clear enough so that other programmers can read and understand it.

In spite of those similarities, scientists have found that reading computer code doesn't activate the regions of the brain that are involved in language processing. Instead, it activates a distributed network called the multiple demand network, which is also related to complex tasks such as solving math problems or crossword puzzles. Although reading computer code activates the multiple demand network, it appears to rely more on different parts of the network than math or logic problems do. “Understanding computer code seems to be its own thing. It isn't the same as learning a language, and it isn't the same as learning math and logic,” says Anna, the lead author of the study.

Evelina is the senior author of the paper, which appears in eLife. A major focus of her research is the relationship between language and the other cognitive (认知的) functions. In particular, she has been studying the question of whether the other functions rely on the brain's language network, which includes Broca's area and the other brain areas. In previous work, her experiment has shown that music and math don't appear to activate this language network and experiments are under way to see if the other functions can activate it.

Evelina says there are two schools of thought regarding how the brain learns to code. One holds that in order to be good at programming, you must be good at math. The other argues that because of the parallels between coding and language, language skills might be more relevant. To clarify this issue, the researchers set out to study whether brain activity patterns while reading computer code would overlap with language-related brain activity.

【1】What can we learn about learning to program a computer from paragraph 1?

    A.It restricts language ability.

B.It just instructs other programmers what to do.

C.It requires the relative organizational capability.

D.It is exactly the same as learning a new language.

【2】What does Anna say about reading computer code?

    A.It thoroughly depends on logic.

B.It is harder than learning a language.

C.It is different from some other cognitive tasks.

D.It activates the language-processing areas of the brain.

【3】What can be inferred about Evelina's research question?

A.Its answer remains to be proved.

B.It has nothing to do with the brain.

C.Its answer has been published in eLife.

D.It has something to do with the origin of language.

【4】What is the last paragraph mainly about?

A.Debate on how the brain learns to code.

B.Human brain activity and thinking patterns.

C.The parallels between human language and computer language.

D.The issue over whether language affects computer programming.

When you are paying upwards of £15,000 a year to have your child privately educated, the big sum of money for extra tuition(学费) may not sit well with you. But that is exactly what seems to be happening. An increasing number of parents look to "top-up" their child's already expensive education with a private tutor.

According to managing director Nevil Chiles of Kensington&Chelsea Tutors, the agency's students tend to fall into two groups. There are those who are struggling with a particular subject and benefit from one-to-one tuition. The second group consists of students who are already excellent but whose parents want to ensure they go on to their preferred school or university.

"We felt Mica needed help with exam technique and we also realized that she did much better one-to-one than in a classroom," explains Bowman, who contacted Kensington & Chelsea Tutors on the advice of a friend who used them for her sons, including one who was attending Eton."Mica has established a good relationship with her tutors and has gained confidence as a result of the tutoring." adds Bowman.
