  • 21、Good Morning Britain (GMB) launches special “listening benches” in order to solve loneliness. EastEnders star Maisie Smith joined Susanna and Martin in the studio to talk about her involvement in a special part of the 1 Million Minutes campaign — GMB’s special “listening benches” across the country.

Six special “listening benches” have been designed by six celebrities, and can be found in six cities across the UK — and they’re in place to encourage people to strike up a conversation. Maisie joined the show to share why the campaign is important to her.

“I’m always very open about mental health,” Maisie explained. “It doesn’t matter who you are, where you’re from, what you have — everyone is going through something and I just think the world would be a kinder place if everyone understood that.”

“I think especially growing up in the limelight (引人注目) as a teenager, you’re very judgemental of yourself when you do see comments of other people judging you. It can add to the stress of the things you re already going through. I think people do think I’m confident because I cover my nerves with a big smile and that’s what I’ve been doing in my whole life.”

Susanna asked Maisie if she had a technique for dealing with her nerves. “It depends on what it is,” said Maisie. “A lot of the time — and it’s going to sound really stupid — but I write a script. I write down all of the questions that I could be asked and try to come up with something so that my brain won’t go blank when I’m under pressure.

【1】What is the theme of “listening benches”?

    A.Caring for oneself.

    B.Changing the world.

    C.Dealing with loneliness.

    D.Protecting the environment.

【2】Why did Maisie Smith join the studio?

A.To let people know about her life.

B.To share her feelings of the campaign.

C.To set up a model for other celebrities.

D.To ask more people to express their mind.

【3】What is Maisie’s attitude toward her mental health?

    A.Protective.

    B.Private.

    C.Serious.

    D.Outspoken.

【4】What is the text mainly about?

    A.A programme on mental health.

    B.GMB interviewing celebrities.

    C.Techniques for responding to nerves.

    D.Preparations before being interviewed.

  • 22、There are countless articles online that will give you advice on how to deal with homesickness. Here are some of my favorite tips that have helped me.

    【1】

Learn to cook with your friends or find new places to eat. Eating with friends makes things so much better. It’s a way to bond and an excuse to get closer. You even get rewarded for it.

Call home—but not every minute of every day.

I saw so many online sources express it in this way, “Talk to your parents—but not too much. Call home—but not too often.” 【2】 However, it’s a problem when you’re talking to them so much that it’s stopping you from having real experiences in this new place.

    Explore.

【3】 It took me a while to do this because I focused so much on my studies, but it’s really important. To me, being homesick was a sign that I needed to organize my time better. So I could take a break and go for a walk.

Find a way to deal with your emotions.

I got a guitar during my sophomore (大学二年级) year of university because that’s what I like doing when I’m by myself. I keep a journal because it makes me feel better and productive if I need time by myself but I don’t want to feel lonely.

An outlet(发泄方式) for your emotions can take any shape or form. Whatever it is, it’s important that you find a way to deal with your emotions. Don’t avoid them, but try to understand them. 【4】 If you focus too much on the negatives, you might forget to see the positives.

    Talk to someone.

There is nothing wrong with finding someone to talk to about how you’re feeling. 【5】 Or it may mean talking to a counselor(顾问) if that’s what you think you need.

There is nothing wrong with being homesick. It’s normal. It’s part of the experience. We all feel things differently, but everything you learn while you are abroad will help you grow.

A.Make food from your home country.

B.Going abroad may cost you a lot of money.

C.It’s good to keep in touch with your family and friends.

D.It’s also a good way to distract(使分心) you in a healthy way.

E.After the first few weeks abroad, many students will feel a little worse.

F.On that line of thought, truly try to explore the city that you’re studying in.

G.It can be friends, family, mentors or professors who you feel can understand you.

  • 23、Picking a university is a tense period of asking yourself which institution is most relevant. That’s why university rankings play such a vital role in students searching for their next academic direction. Rankings are also an inescapable part of the reputation and brand image of universities. “No university website is complete without the claim to be in the top 100 for something or other,” reported the BBC. The reason is simple: Rankings help them to attract students, staff and research investment.

Currently there are numbers of university rankings, and each has its own list of criteria. But the main categories are the same: academic reputation, graduates' performance and faculty resources.

However, experts point out the ranking process isn't entirely reliable. Mark Kantrowitz, a US financial aid researcher, said university rankings were mostly just for show. He wrote in The New York Times. “It may give your parents better bragging rights, but that's about it.”

Moreover, it’s not difficult to see the limitations of university rankings. Many rankings focus on the number of times research work is cited (引用) by other researchers. It helps British and US universities to dominate global rankings because English is the favored language of academia, John O’Leary, a member of the QS academic advisory board, told The Gunrdian. Also, rankings such as QS mainly focus on the qualities of the university rather than its students. “Any university ranking is likely to help students make better decisions about where to study, but the need to balance them with other more human factors is also important,” said Phil Moss, an education and admissions consultant. “Advice from graduates or current students can be as valuable in providing a genuine insight into the experience or quality of a particular degree program. It can also add an element that rankings can never convey -- the actual emotion of a university experience.”

【1】Why do universities consider rankings important?

    A. Rankings make them more appealing.

    B. Rankings are students’ only reference.

    C. Rankings can increase their academic level.

    D. Rankings help them complete their websites.

【2】What does the underlined “It” in paragraph 4 refer to?

    A. Academic research work.

    B. The number of researches.

    C. The way of ranking universities.

    D. The limitation of university ranking.

【3】According to John O’Leary, what helps British and US universities rank well?

    A. The wide use of English in academia.

    B. Their outstanding qualities.

    C. Their graduates’ excellent performance.

    D. The academia’s favor to them.

【4】Besides ranking, what does Phil Moss suggest you should refer to if you're picking a university?

    A. Investment in education.

    B. Guidance from professors.

    C. Information on websites.

    D. Suggestions from students.

  • 24、After 40 years, I met my childhood hero. Not a sporting god or an ageing popstar. Judy Blume, the beloved children’s author, at this year’s Sydney Writer’s Festival.

Still I am uneasy. As a primary school teacher and mum, what of today’s children’s inner lives? And their books? For them, “electronics have changed everything about the how of communication,” says Blume. “But not what they’re feeling.” Screens lure (诱惑) Australian children for up to seven hours a day. Screen time may involve reading and positive social interactions.

Reading books connects us in spirit. It unites generations and shapes children’s identity, their own voice. Reading books fired our imaginations. Characters filled our hearts. They were good company.

Will this generation feel the same? Surely “intelligent digital beings” like Siri, Alexa or Google Home could never replace children’s imaginary social companions?

Psychology Professor Sandra Calvert thinks it’s possible. She writes in the Journal of Children and Media although young children may understand that “artificial beings” are not biologically alive, children’s “personification and treatment of them ‘as if’ they are alive, may be enough to make them valuable social partners, who can serve as trusted teachers and friends”. Robots? Digital imitations can’t connect children with what it means to be human.

And books smell good. “How can we encourage children to read?” I asked my childhood hero. “Go to a bookstore with your child,” says Blume. “Sit on the floor. Turn the pages. Read the first page, a middle page, or don’t, but help your child find a voice they can connect with.” You can do that at the library or with a teacher. Me, I will be heading to the attic to dust off a few favourites.

    【1】What makes the author uneasy?

    A.Children’s reading less and less.

    B.Being a stressed teacher.

    C.An unhealthy lifestyle.

D.The effect of screen on children’s eyesight.

【2】What does Sandra Calvert say about Children?

    A.They lack encouragement.

B.They spend much time on screen.

    C.They demand trusted companions.

D.They are likely to be influenced by electronics.

【3】According to Blume, the way to encourage children to read mainly lies in ________.

    A.enabling them to have interest.

    B.parents’ serving as role models.

    C.accompanying them to a bookstore.

D.helping feel inner lives of themselves.

【4】What is the best title for the text?

    A.My Childhood Hero—Judy Blume.

    B.Reading Books’ Disadvantages.

C.Reading Books—More Positive Effects on Children

D.The Methods Helping Children Read More.
