  • 21、Top Ongoing Mega (巨大的) Projects In China

    Shanghai Urban Rail Transit Expansion

It includes construction of nine rail projects including six subway lines and three intercity railways. The projects, begun in 2018, are estimated to total 286 km. The network is aimed at creating better connections between the financial center’s two airports and two major railway stations. They are expected to be completed by 2023.

Intercity Railway along the Yangtze River in Jiangsu

Starting from last year, eight regional intercity railways will be built in a metropolitan groups along the Yangtze River in Jiangsu Province, a move to shorten traffic time from Nanjing to other districts and cities within the province. Some of the lines will also connect Nanjing to cities in the neighbouring Anhui. Construction of the intercity lines is estimated to run until 2025.

    Wuhan Urban Rail Transit

It involves construction of four subways lines and four urban express lines in the central Chinese city of Wuhan. The NDRC said that the projects will support Wuhan’s urban layout and ease the city’s traffic jam. A circle line with 37 stops starting from Wuchang railway station tops the investment plan, which alone will cost US $8.66 billion. The construction will run from 2019 to 2024.

    South-North Water Transfer Project

The north of China is home to almost 50% of China’s population but has only about 20% of the country’s water resources. To change this imbalance, China has funded the construction of three huge canals, each more than 600 miles long and will carry water to the north from China’s three largest rivers. The project began in 2002 with a 48-year construction schedule. When completed, it will supply 44.8 billion cubic water.

    Beijing International Airport

When completed, it will surpass Dubai’s AI Makioum International Airport in cost, total square miles, and passenger and plane capacity. Its first stage was completed in time for the 2008 Olympics. Further expansion is scheduled for completion by 2025. Terminal 1, designed by the architect Zaha Hadid, combines a number of sustainable design concepts in a futuristic building envelope.

  • 22、Conventionally butterflies were regarded not as fascinating subjects for close observation but as symbols of shallowness. But Eleanor Granville treated them with scientific seriousness.

In her thirties, though suffering from a marriage where the husband was violent and even turned her family against her, Granville sought comfort by studying moths and butterflies. She travelled around the countryside with local girls, beating bushes to catch falling larvae (幼虫), and recruited her servants as assistants to collect specimens (样本). Because of unusual generosity in paying for a fine specimen, she soon accumulated a substantial collection of butterflies. After bringing larvae home, she meticulously logged their growth, providing some of the earliest detailed accounts of insect life cycles.

However, wandering the countryside with a collecting net was considered weird behavior for anyone back then, let alone a woman, and she was accused of going out dressed like a “gypsy”.

Besides her own extensive research, Granville exchanged letters and butterflies with other collectors. Another enthusiast William Vernon reported that she had owned “the noblest collections of butterflies, all English, which has shamed us”. She sent 100 examples to the Royal Society and also sent James Petiver, England’s most celebrated butterfly expert, boxes of carefully pinned butterflies, including several that had been previously unknown, and notably the one later named the Granville fritillary whose wings carry striking brown and yellow patterns, a species of special concern due to the decline of the total number under the influence of food loss and hotter weather.

Eleanor Granville remains the only British naturalist to have left their name to a native butterfly species. A pioneer in the study of entomology (昆虫学), Cranville helped make it an academic subject. Regretfully, only two moths and a butterfly of Granville’s precious specimens are still preserved in London’s Natural History Museum. Her name lives on the butterflies she loved.

【1】What do we know about Granville?

A.She paid generously for every specimen.

B.She was accused of deserting her family.

C.Studying butterflies provided an escape from her life.

D.Working with local girls earned her a good reputation.

【2】What can we learn from Paragraph 4?

    A.James Petiver greatly influenced Granville.

B.Granville’s efforts shamed the Royal Society.

C.The Granville fritillary is an endangered species.

    D.Granville’s work was academically recognized.

【3】How did Granville contribute to the field of entomology?

    A.By naming butterflies and moths.

    B.By studying rare butterfly specimens.

C.By offering up her collections for research.

    D.By introducing entomology into universities.

【4】Which is the most suitable title for the text?

    A.A Battle Against Social Conventions

    B.A Woman Who Collected Butterflies

C.An Adventurer Trapped in a Woman

    D.An Undertaking That Changed History

  • 23、Would you sail over 12,900 kilometres across the Pacific Ocean in a boat made from plastic bottles?

In 2010, a crew of six people did. They sailed on the Plastiki, an 18.3-metre boat made from recycled materials. Everything about the Plastiki was environmentally friendly. The sails were produced from recycled plastic and the masts that held them from used aluminum pipes. Organic materials, such as glue made from nuts and sugar, were used to keep the bottles in place. To power the boat, solar panels and wind turbines were used.

During the journey, crew members lived in a plastic cabin. Their daily routine consisted of sleeping, eating and doing chores. For food, they mainly survived on fresh vegetables grown in a hanging garden as well as canned and dried food. They also ate fresh fish, but were surprised to discover that they found more plastic than fish. “From above, the oceans still look beautiful and untouched,” David said, “but just below the surface is this toxic stew that could quickly end up on our dinner plates.”

The leader, David, organised the voyage in order to draw people’s attention to the environmental dangers our oceans face and the need to recycle plastic. He planned to visit damaged coral reefs and islands in danger from rising sea levels. However, his most important objective was to see the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a huge mass of plastic particles floating in the North Pacific. David hoped that, by sailing through the Patch, he could show the world how serious plastic pollution had become.

Unfortunately, the Plastiki was more difficult to control than expected. Therefore, the boat missed its main destination. However, the crew did make stops at islands in the mid-Pacific, where they picked up supplies and talked to local students. Along the way, they battled fierce ocean storms, torn sails and temperatures that reached up to 38°C.

When the Plastiki finally sailed into Sydney’s harbour, the crew were greeted by cheers. The Plastiki’s journey had shown that if we understand how to use waste materials efficiently, they can be transformed into valuable resources. It had also revealed that it was more important than ever to deliver a serious message: our oceans are filling up with plastic faster than we thought.

【1】What was special about the Plastiki?

    A.It had high-tech equipment.

B.It was made of green materials.

C.It once crossed the Pacific Ocean.

D.It had a professional crew on it.

【2】What was the purpose of the Plastiki’s voyage?

    A.To protect endangered ocean life.

B.To test the safety of a new boat.

C.To stop people using plastic products.

D.To highlight the plastic waste problem.

【3】Which of the following best describes Plastiki’s voyage?

    A.Boring but carbon-free.

    B.Controversial but fruitful.

    C.Aimless but comfortable.

    D.Challenging but significant.

【4】What message is conveyed in the last paragraph?

    A.Limited resources should be valued.

B.Actions must be taken by individuals.

C.Plastic waste can be turned into treasure.

D.Environmental problems can be easily solved.

  • 24、Artificial cloud technology could soon be used in the fight against environmental damage. Researchers in Australia have used machines to spray salt water into the air, and noted that the reflective qualities of these artificial clouds helped protect the Great Barrier Reef from sun bleaching.

The so-called cloud brightening project works by thickening existing clouds and reducing sunlight exposure. No artificial chemicals make it into the clouds in the sky, and when water droplets steam they leave only small salt crystals that float up into the atmosphere. This provides a larger surface area for water vapor (水蒸气) to be liquids around them, forming thicker clouds.

Cloud manipulation (控制) is becoming more commonplace as climate change threatens to destroy our ecosystems. The past two years have seen unheard-of forest fires and droughts caused by the climate change emergency, meaning that widespread use of this technique may become more commonplace if carbon emissions are not controlled strictly.

Drones have also entered the cloud manipulation picture, being used in the United Arab Emeritus, a country desperately in need of more rainfall, to deliver electrical shocks to clouds in order to promote rainfall. Zapping (击打) clouds to produce a positive or negative charge within clouds can cause water droplets to form together. The greater the charge, the larger the droplets, vital for ensuring that as much rain as possible reaches the surface before steam gives off all the hard-won moisture (水分).

Even discounting climate change, global waterfall shortages are still an increasing concern, giving the planet’s booming population. More people means more mouths to feed, and the demand for water in agriculture for animals and crops further increases urgency for cloud manipulation technology. An increase in rain also leads to positive economic growth in many countries, as large harvests stabilize financial systems and living standards in all climates.

Increasingly, scientists are looking to our skies in providing solutions to protect our environment. Cloud manipulation technologies have promise; however, they can also be extremely expensive to run. For this field of science to become practical economically, more research needs to be done in making this process a practicable option in protecting our environment.

【1】How does the cloud brightening project work?

    A.By forming thicker clouds.

    B.By leaving small salt crystals.

C.By providing a large surface area.

D.By spraying salt water into the air.

【2】What contributes to the widespread use of cloud manipulation?

    A.Failure in stopping forest fires.

    B.Adaptation to climate changes.

    C.Adaptation to ecosystem changes.

    D.Failure in reducing carbon emissions.

【3】What can drones do in cloud manipulation?

    A.Using water droplets to rain.

    B.Charging clouds to promote rain.

    C.Going into the cloud manipulation.

D.Producing a positive charge outside the clouds.

【4】What can be inferred from the passage?

A.Our globe is suffering severe waterfall shortages.

B.Cloud manipulation technologies will be more affordable to run.

C.The cloud manipulation technology increases agriculture urgency.

D.Cloud manipulation technologies can end environment problems.
