二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、People talk about energy everywhere. Green energy, for example. Then, energy independence. It has a nice ring to it. Doesn’t it? If you think so, you’re not alone, because energy independence has been the dream of American president for decades, and never more so than in the past few years, when the most recent oil price shock has been partly responsible for kicking off the great recession(经济衰退).

"Energy independence" and its rhetorical(修辞的) companion "energy security" are, however, unreliable concepts that are rarely thought through. What is it that we want independence from, exactly?

Most people would probably say that they want to be independent from imported oil. But there are reasons that we buy all that oil from elsewhere.

The first reason is that we need it to keep our economy running. Yes, there is a trickle(涓涓细流) of biofuel(生物燃料) available, and more may become available, but most biofuels cause economic waste and environmental destruction.

Second, Americans have basically decided that they don’t really want to produce all their own oil. They value the environmental quality they preserve over their oil imports from abroad. Vast areas of the United States are off-limits to oil exploration and production in the name of environmental protection. To what extent are Americans really willing to tolerate the environmental influence of domestic(国内的) energy production in order to cut back imports?

Third, there are benefits to trade. It allows for economic efficiency, and when we buy things from places that have lower production costs than we do, we benefit. And although you don’t read about this much, the United States is also a large exporter of oil products, selling about 2 million barrels of petroleum products per day to about 90 countries.

There is no question that the United States imports a great deal of energy and, in fact, relies on that steady flow to keep its economy stable. When that flow is interrupted, we feel the pain in short supplies and higher prices. At the same time, we get massive economic benefits when we buy the most affordable energy on the world market and when we engage in energy trade around the world.

1What does the author say about energy independence for America?

    A. It sounds very attractive.

    B. It ensures national security.

    C. It will bring oil prices down.

    D. It will protect the environment.

2Why does America rely heavily on oil imports?

    A. It wants to expand its storage of raw oil.

    B. Its own oil reserves are quickly running out.

    C. Its own oil production falls short of demand.

    D. It wants to keep its own environment untouched.

3What does the author say about oil trade?

    A. It improves economic efficiency.

    B. It makes for economic recession.

    C. It brings benefit only to the sellers.

    D. It saves the cost of oil exploration.

4What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?

    A. To explain the increase of international oil trade.

    B. To raise Americans' awareness of the energy crisis.

    C. To argue for America’s dependence on oil imports.

    D. To stress the importance of energy protection.

  • 22、   When Central Bucks South became one of the first Philadelphia-area high schools to close due to fear of novel coronavirus exposure in early March, 16-year-old sophomore Andrew Chen knew that things were not going to return to normal as quickly as some of his peers hoped.

But still, the change from seeing his friends on the swim team during daily practices to learning alone at home was jarring. “I only have three years here at South, and it pains me to see one of them being wasted,” Chen said.

The coronavirus has upended everyone’s lives, but for students, the disruption feels particularly acute. Schools closed and graduation ceremonies were canceled. Summer plans, like camps and internships, are up in the air.

But right now, many students are trying to stay connected, struggling with misinformation, and figuring out the best ways they can help through online method.

For Josh Harycki, 17, a senior student at the Shipley School in Philadelphia, the best way to contribute was to create a “social distancing pledge” for young people.

“I saw a lot of younger generations not paying attention,” he said. “They were still going out, hanging out with people. I thought that there had to be a way to reach younger folks, who were probably not watching the news.”

Harycki launched a call to action on social media and then built a website with a map that tracked the locations of people who’d signed the pledge. The site also shares links to accurate sources of information like the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Harycki knows that his peers are worried they can’t connect with their friends in the same way, so he created the social distancing pledge to stress that while everyone might be physically distant, they’re still connected.

“Part of what we’re highlighting is that you might feel like you’re the only one taking this seriously, but our map shows that you’re not alone,” he said.

1What do the underlined words “up in the air” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?

    A.unnatural B.uncertain C.unnecessary D.unreasonable

2Why does the author describe Andrew Chen’s experience in the text?

A.To show how the coronavirus affected students’ lives.

B.To explain what worried students most when schools closed.

C.To illustrate the appropriate reaction to the closure of school.

D.To present the different views of students toward the coronavirus.

3Who does Harycki mainly want to reach out to?

A.Friends who are worried and bored.

    B.Folks taking the coronavirus seriously.

C.Younger generations trying to contribute to society.

D.Young people who are not aware of the situation.

4What’s Harycki’s purpose in creating the “social distancing pledge”?

A.To track those people infected with the coronavirus.

B.To convince young people to stay at home.

C.To inform young folks of latest news about the coronavirus.

D.To show young people they shouldn’t be concerned about the coronavirus.

  • 23、You jerk(猛然一动)awake in the middle of the night in confusion. Is there a figure standing in the corner of the room? Your brain begs your legs to move, but nothing happens. The anxiety increases. Your eyes scan the room. Just as you’re about to hit peak panic, you sit up and the figure disappears.

You’ve just experienced sleep paralysis(瘫痪), which is the name experts give to all sorts of weird things that occur during sleep. It happens when the brain temporarily disables the body to prevent it from acting out the vivid dreams occurring during REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. It often comes with a feeling of immobility, and a sense of choking. The good news is, it’s absolutely normal, even if it’s terrifying.

But when sleep paralysis happens outside of deep sleep—when a person is just dozing off—it can be “disruptive of the architecture of sleep,” said Baland Jalal, a researcher who investigates the phenomenon. That could lead to more sleep paralysis.

While not everyone who has sleep paralysis experiences hallucinations(幻觉), seeing a person or a ghost in the room is the most common vision, said Jalal. The mechanisms behind sleep paralysis remain unclear, but research indicates that certain risk factors may increase the likelihood of experiencing a jerk, including extreme exercise before sleep, inadequate sleep, emotional stress and worry, and excessive stimulant consumption (like caffeine and nicotine), especially later in the day.

“For most people, it is not indicative of any kind of disease. If you are really worried about it, regular sleep and other simple relaxation techniques, like meditation, deep breathing and yoga, may help,” said Dr. Nathaniel Watson, president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. While the experience feels frightening, the episodes last only a few seconds or minutes at most. Most people slip out of it as quickly as they fell into it, he said.

Maybe the power of one's belief isn't the ultimate example of intelligence. Maybe, in a constantly changing world, the ability to make judgements and change one's mind accordingly is much more important. That's Adam Grant's theory, and Think Again is here to help you to look at the world around you, check your assumptions, and—you guessed it—think again. —Chris Schluep, Amazon Editor

This book reads like fiction but tells the true story of murder and greed that troubled the Osage Nation in Oklahoma in the 1920s. When oil was discovered on their land, the Osage people became the wealthiest in the world and the targets (particularly the women) for the white men who had their sights set on marrying and murdering into their riches. I suggest you treat yourself to this exceptional read right now. —Seira Wilson, Amazon Editor

The subject of Isaacson’s book is Jennifer Doudna, who won the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for her work developing CRISPR. CRISPR is the innovation that will open the door to gene control, driving the life sciences revolution for decades to come. But it will also open the door to moral problem as we ask ourselves. How far should we go in editing humans—especially before birth—and who should control those decisions? —Vannessa Cronin, Amazon Editor

四、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 26、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My last morning with Jesse began like so many others. I woke him up with a song and kissed him until he giggled (咯咯地笑). It was a beautiful, sunny morning but so cold that my car was coated with a layer of frost. Jesse's father, Neil, arrived to take Jesse to school. We finalized plans to meet at Jesse's elementary school the next morning. When I turned to kiss Jesse goodbye, I saw that he'd written a note to me in the frost on the passenger-side window and door — I Love You. He stood there smiling at me.

When Neil and Jesse got to school, Neil parked the car and walked with Jesse through the front door and into the main hallway, where they hugged goodbye as usual. Jesse put his hands on Neil's shoulders. “I just want you to know it's going to be OK. I love you and Mom.” Then Jesse turned and walked away down the hall towards his first-grade classroom.

I'd been at work for about an hour when my colleague Tina sent me an instant message: “Did you hear about a shooting at a school in Newton?”

The message shocked me, but I remained calm. Even if the report were true, what were the odds that of all the schools in Newton, something like that would happen at the school that Jesse or my older son J. T. attended? Then my phone rang.

It was my friend and neighbour Diane. “Did you hear that a teacher got shot in the foot at Jesse's school?” she asked. A second later, every electronic device around me was ringing, either asking me what was going on or giving me fragments (片段) of information they’d heard. It was too much for my brain to assemble, but it seemed clear that there had been a shooting, and had definitely happened at Sandy Hook Elementary — Jesse's school.

Then Neil called, worried. “Nothing really bad could have happened, Neil. This is Sandy Hook! Jesse is fine,” I said. Neil was heading out to pick up Jesse at the Sandy Hook firehouse, which had been designated as the official meeting place for parents and students. I decided I would just go, as well in case Jesse needed comforting.

We searched all the places nearby for Jesse, but in vain.
