二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、   The COVID-19 pandemic has spread far and wide. Because of this, countries around the world have carried out measures to help stop the virus in its tracks. As more people stay inside to stay safe, the outside world seems to have become much quieter. In fact, scientists have seen this change in their research.

Seismologists - scientists who study earthquakes - have heard a lot less seismic(地震的) noise recently.

Seismic noise is made from vibrations (continuous shaking movements) in the ground that are caused by things like ocean waves and human activity, such as construction work and traffic. This noise makes it difficult for scientists to pick up seismic activity that is made at the same frequency.

Thomas Lecocq, a scientist at the Royal Observatory of Belgium, located in Brussels, was the first to notice this phenomenon. According to Lecocq, the amount of seismic noise in Brussels has been reduced by about 30 to 50 percent since mid-March. Interestingly enough, this is around the same time Belgium started its measures. Because of this reduction in background noise, scientists like Lecocq have been able to pick up on smaller earthquakes that some seismic stations - like the one in Brussels - wouldn’t have been able to before.

This phenomenon isn’t unique to Brussels, though. Once Lecocq shared his findings online, seismologists from all over the world echoed similar findings. Celeste Labedz, a graduate student at the California Institute of Technology, mentioned in a tweet that Los Angeles also experienced less background noise. “The drop is seriously wild,” she wrote.

Researchers from the UK, France and New Zealand also noted a decrease in background noise since measures were put in place.

These global efforts to contain the COVID-19 virus have helped to shed light on seismic activity that may have gone unnoticed. It also shows that people are listening to health officials and following lockdown rules. “From the seismological point of view, we can motivate people to say, ‘You feel like you’re alone at home, but we can tell you that everyone is home. Everyone is respecting the rules,’” Lecocq told CNN.

1What did seismologists find out recently?

A.Reduced seismic vibration makes the Earth quieter.

B.More smaller earthquakes are more likely to happen.

C.Many seismic activities have been detected recently.

D.Seismic noise is caused by vibrations underground.

2What can we infer from the text?

A.More seismic noise is being picked up.

B.More data on smaller earthquakes is being collected.

C.Scientists will shift their focus to smaller earthquakes.

D.Future big earthquakes must be more accurately predicted.

3The underlined word “echoed” in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to “__________”.

    A.repeated B.demanded C.explored D.questioned

4Which of the following statements does Lecocq mostly probably agree?

A.The drop in seismic noise is unique to Europe.

B.Seismic noise is mainly caused by human activity.

C.Many seismologists wanted tighter restrictions for their research.

D.The phenomenon proved that people are practicing social lockdown rules.

  • 22、   Teacher burnout(倦怠) and student stress may be linked, according to a University of British Columbia study. The study is the first of its kind to examine the connection between teacher burnout and students' cortisol levels(可体松水平), which are a biological indicator of stress.

Researchers collected saliva(唾液)samples from over 400 elementary school children and tested their cortisol levels. They found that in classrooms in which teachers experienced more burnout, or feelings of emotional exhaustion, students' cortisol levels were elevated. Higher cortisol levels in elementary school children have been linked to learning difficulties as well as mental health problems.

"This suggests that stress spreading might be taking place in the classroom among students and their teachers," said Eva Oberle, the study's lead author. Indeed, the relationship between student stress and teacher burnout is a chicken and egg question. It is unknown what came first - elevated cortisol or teacher burnout. We consider the connection between student and teacher stress a cyclical problem in the classroom."

Oberle said a stressful classroom climate could be a result of inadequate support for teachers, which may impact teachers' ability to effectively manage their students. A poorly managed classroom can contribute to students' needs not being met and increasing stress. This could be reflected in elevated cortisol levels in students.

Alternatively, stress could originate from students, who may be more challenging to teach because of increases in anxiety, behavioural problems, or special needs. In this scenario, teachers could feel overwhelmed and report higher levels of burnout.

"Our study is a reminder of the systemic issues facing teachers and educators as classroom sizes increase and supports for teachers are cut," said Oberle.

"It is clear from a number of recent research studies that teaching is one of the most stressful professions, and that teachers need adequate resources and support in their jobs in order to battle burnout and alleviate stress in the classroom," said UBC education professor Kimberly Schonert-Reichl, the study's co-author and director of HELP. "If we do not support teachers, we risk the collateral damage(附带损害) of students.

1Which is the best title of the passage?

A.How to Relieve Stress in the class

B.A puzzling Question of Egg and Chicken

C.The Most Stressful Profession in the world

D.The Link Between Students Stress and Teacher Burnout

2Paragraph 4 and paragraph 5 are intended to make it clear that___________.

A.teacher burnout may be cause of the elevated cortisol levels in students

B.the connection between students and teacher stress is a cyclical problem

C.students with higher stress level are more likely to have learning difficulties

D.student’ behavioural problems may result in teacher’s higher level of burnout

3According to the writer, many British teachers face the problem that __________.

A.teacher are not well trained to deal with students’ problems.

B.teachers’ income increases but teaching resources are cut

C.there’re more students in each class and less support for teachers

D.there is a widening gap between students’ need and teachers’ ability

4Which of the following statements is FALSE?

A.The more burnout teachers experience, the higher cortisol levels in students.

B.Adequate support may help teachers manage students more effectively.

C.Students will benefit as a result of reduced teacher burnout.

D.High cortisol level indicates high level of burnout.

  • 23、A gust of wind blew a canvas chair across the yard. My eyes followed the circling dirt out to the road and down toward the school bus stop. I was going to miss walking down the road to catch the big school bus that took us into town to school. I enjoyed being with the teachers and the  other  students.  Now  that  I  was  finished  with  school  I  seemed  to  have  lost  some  of  the excitement from my life.

As  I was  folding  the  canvas chair, Chatita Chávez drove  into our yard  in her  father’s old truck.  It made short loud sounds and sent out a trail of black smoke out of its tailpipe. She got out smiling as usual and excitedly pointed toward the storm that seemed to be moving toward us.

“I can’t stay long, Nilda. There’s a storm coming and I need to beat it home.” I was glad to see her. “Yes, I think we’re in for some bad weather. Come on in and have a cup of coffee at least,” I said as I took her into our kitchen.

“I’m so excited, Nilda! You’ll never guess what I just did!”  I stopped pouring the coffee and turned and looked at her.

“I just went over to Edinburg and registered for junior college,” she said and looked at me and smiled. “Don’t you want to go take classes with me?”

I was astonished. I didn’t know what to say. How could I go to college?  I didn’t have any money.  I  gave  Chatita  a  cup  of  coffee.  “I  don’t  know.  I  don’t  think  I  can.  Isn’t  college expensive?”

Chatita  sat down  at  the  table  and began  adding  sugar  to her  coffee.  “Not  really,  and I’m working part-time at the packing shed(棚)on Canal Road. You could work there, too.”

The wind  began  to  gust  causing  the  house  to  occasionally make  sounds  and  shake.  The lightbulb  hanging  over  the  table  flashed  off  and  on  and  I  heard  a  low  roll  of  thunder  in  the distance.

I hesitantly asked, “Do you think I could get a job at the packing shed?”

“Sure. My cousin is the boss. He’ll give you a job.” Mamá  came  into  the  kitchen  and  exchanged  greetings with Chatita. She must have heard our conversation.

“I  think  it’s  nice  that  you’re  going  to  go  to  college, Chatita. What will  you  study?” my

mother asked as she joined us at the table.

“I want to be a teacher.”

“A teacher! How nice!” Mamá said as she patted Chatita’s arm.

    “A teacher?” I asked. “Don’t you need a degree?”

“You can start teaching before you get your degree. Clarence Duncan has been teaching in Brownsville since last year and I think Zulema will start this year.”

The lightbulb blinked again and went out. Mamá quickly arose from the table. “I’m going to have to bring in the lanterns. I knew I shouldn’t have packed them away.”

“Well, Nilda, do you want to go? Because, if you do, you can go over to Edinburg with me tomorrow.”

I hesitated, then said, “Yes. I want to go.” My heart was beating fast. I couldn’t believe how happy I was feeling.

“But I have to talk to Mamá and Papá. What if they won’t let me?”

“You can at least go with me tomorrow and find out what it’s all about. I’ll come by for you around eight.”

Chatita left me sitting at the table staring at my cup of coffee. It seemed so unreal, this idea of me going to college. My parents had never had the opportunity for much education. Juana had quit school  to get married and Roberto and Zeke had graduated from high school as I had. But college? I would be the first one in my family to go to college. Yes, college was exactly what I wanted.

The day had  turned dark and  the  rain had started. My mother  came back  into  the kitchen with two lanterns.

“Mamá, I need to ask you something.”

She picked up a cloth and began to clean the dust from the lanterns. She looked at me and smiled.

“Mamá,  if  I  could  find  a way  to pay,  could  I  take  classes  at  the  junior  college?”  I  asked, trying to control my excitement.

She stopped cleaning and raised her eyebrows. “What would you study, my daughter?”

“I think I want to be a teacher,” I quietly replied.

Mamá sat down at the table across from me. “Then, I would like for you to go to college,” she said in a serious tone.

“What about Papá? Do you think he will allow me to go?”

“Your  father wants  you  to  be  happy.  If  going  to  college  and  being  a  teacher makes  you happy, then he will probably allow it,” she answered.

I didn’t say anything. I was enjoying the feeling of happiness and sense of wonder that had come over me. The two of us sat in the darkened room without speaking until  I saw my mamá rubbing her eyes with the edge of her apron.

    “What’s wrong, Mamá.”

“Nothing,” she replied. “I probably got some dust in my eyes. That’s all.”

  • 24、Aspirin was discovered in 1897, and an explanation of how it works followed in 1995. That, in turn, has encouraged some research leads on making better pain relievers through something other than trial and error. This kind of discovery—answers first, explanations later—is called "intellectual debt". We gain understanding of what works without knowing why it works. We can put that understanding to use immediately, and then tell ourselves we'll figure out the details later. Sometimes we pay off the debt quickly; sometimes, as with aspirin, it takes a century; and sometimes we never pay it off at all.

In the Age of Intelligence, while machine learning presents lots of problems and gets things wrong, at least we know enough to be wary of the predictions produced by the system and to argue that they shouldn't be blindly followed: but if a system performs perfectly(and we don't know why), then we come to rely on it and forget about it and suffer consequences when it goes wrong.

It's the difference between knowing your car has faulty brakes and not knowing: both are bad, but if you know there is a problem with your brakes, you can increase your following distance, drive slowly and get to a mechanic as soon as possible. If you don't know, you' re likely to find out the hard way, at 80mph on the highway when the car in front of you comes to a sudden stop and your brakes give out.

We don't have much by way of solutions. Most important, we shouldn't trick ourselves into thinking that machine learning alone is all that matters. Indeed, without life value, machine learning may not be meaningful answers at all.

【1】What is the purpose of mentioning aspirin in the first paragraph?

A.To present the research process of aspirin.

B.To introduce a similar situation machine learning faces.

C.To show the difficulty in explaining how aspirin works.

D.To prove we can use something even when we don't understand.

【2】What does the underlined word "wary" probably mean in Paragraph 2?

    A.Negative.

    B.Doubtful.

    C.Anxious.

    D.Watchful.

【3】How does the writer prove that it's potentially worse if a system performs perfectly?

    A.By telling a story.

    B.By giving a definition.

    C.By doing an experiment.

    D.By making comparison.

【4】Which of the following statements is the writer likely to agree with?

A.It's OK as long as a system works well.

B.It's impossible to pay off Intellectual debt.

C.It's unwise to rely blindly on machine learning.

D.It makes no sense to pay attention to life value.
