26、There is plenty of complaints about how social media—texting in particular—may be harming children's social and intellectual development. But a new study suggests that constant instant messaging (IM'ing) and texting among teens may also provide benefit particularly for those who are introverted (内向的).
British researchers studied instant messages exchanged by 231 teens, aged 14 to 18. All of the participants were "regular" or "extensive" IM'ers. In the U.S. two thirds of teens use instant messaging services regularly, with a third messaging at least once every day.
The researchers analyzed 150 conversations in the study, and reported the results in the journal Computers in Human Behavior. In 100 of these chats, the studied participants began IM'ing while they are in negative emotional states such as sadness, distress or anger. The rest were conversations begun when the participants were feeling good or neutral(不带感情色彩的). After the chat, participants reported about a 20% reduction in their distress—not enough to completely do away with it, but enough to leave them feeling better than they had before reaching out.
Our findings suggest that IM'ing between distressed adolescents and their peers may provide emotional relief and consequently contribute to their well-being,"the authors write. And people who talk with their real-life friends online also report feeling closer to them than those who just communicate face-to-face, implying a strengthening of their bond.
Why would digital communication do better than human contact? The reasons are complex, but may have something to do with the fact that users can control expression of sadness and other emotions via IM without exposing emotional elements like tears that some may consider as embarrassing or sources of discomfort. Studies also show that the anonymity(匿名) of writing on a device blankets the users in a sense of safety that may cause people to feel more comfortable in sharing and discussing their deepest and most authentic feelings. The research has shown that expressive writing itself car vent the stress and provide a sense of relief-and doing so, knowing that your words are reaching a sympathetic(同情的)friend, may provide even more comfort and potentially be therapeutic(治愈的). Researchers also found that introverted participants reported more relief from IM conversations when they were distressed than extroverts did. Susan Cain author of Quiet wrote recently for TME: introvert are often overfilled with thoughts and care deeply for their friends, family and colleagues. But even the most socially skilled introverts sometimes long for a free pass from socializing or talking on the phone. This is what the Internet offers: the chance to connect--but in measured amounts and from behind a screen.

Elephant Reserve Country: Thailand This is a working vacation at a wildlife centre. Anyone can become a volunteer if he/she agrees to help the elephant keepers with tasks. Daily tasks Gather the elephants at 6:30 am. Take them to look for food in the forest. Clean the enclosure(围场). Swim with the elephants in the lake in the afternoon. If volunteers want to relax after work, they can watch satellite television. How this vacation helps If these elephants hadn’t been rescued, they would still be living on the streets of Bangkok. The rural environment is much better for them than the urban environment where there is lots of pollution. Your Comment “I love working with these huge gentle animals.” |
Gorilla safari(观赏野兽的旅行) Countries: Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda Departures(出发): 2—3 departures per month from Aug. to Dec. Extras: permit £220 If you’re lucky, you’ll see lions, elephants and rhinos during this safari. The highlight(最好的部分) of the trip is the opportunity to see gorillas in the mountain forests. However, you must be in good health — if a gorilla caught a cold, it would be extremely harmful to its whole family. How this vacation helps There are only about 600 gorillas left in the world as human activity has reduced the area where they can live. When you buy a permit, this will pay for the protection of the national park. Your comment “I’ll surely go back as soon as I have enough money!” |
Polar bear watching Area & Country: Arctic, Canada Departures: sixty trips between Oct. 1—Nov.19. Every October and November groups of polar bears gather in Hudson Bay. As they are normally lonely creatures, this is unusual. The bears wait for the ocean to freeze so that they can hunt for seals, so this is the perfect opportunity to see them. Extra activities include dog sledding(狗拉雪橇) and a night trip to see the Northern Lights. How this vacation helps If the Arctic ice cap melts due to global warming, polar bears will be in danger. We give a share of our profits(利益) to the charity that protects polar bears. Your comment “These terrible bears get all the liquid they need from their food.” |

28、 While anyone can enter the 189-foot Cinderella’s Castle at Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida to shop or eat, Disney allows only a very lucky few to stay overnight in its Cinderella Suite, which sits at the top of the clock tower.
If you’ve ever wondered what it feels like to be a Disney Princess, CNBC Make It got a first look with “The Bucket List Family”. Garrett and Jessica Gee and their two young children, 5-year-old daughter, Dorothy, and 3-year-old son, Manilla, slept in Cinderella’s quarters for the night. They were guests of Disney as part of their “30 stays in 30 days” blogging series. Here’s a look inside.
To get into the suite, you open a large wooden door on the ground floor of the castle and enter a Gothic-style room where a 24-hour concierge (看门人) is there to attend to any needs you may have. You’re then accompanied into a small elevator that resembles the pumpkin coach Cinderella took to the ball. It opens directly into the suite.
Walking into the suite feels like you’re walking into a real castle. In the bedroom area, the two beds have carved wood frames and are made up with rich-looking linen. Stained glass windows tell a visual story of Cinderella’s journey from an unloved maid to a princess. “Depending on the window, you could look out and see Fantasyland or Main Street,” Jessica says. “It was fun waking up in the morning and seeing people coming into the park.” Behind a glass case are Cinderella’s glass slippers and her crown. Even the bathroom is fit for a princess. Two additional guests can sleep in the living room, which includes a “magic TV” that functions as both a mirror and an entertainment system. In a box behind the couch is a telescope so you can look out and see the different Disney characters walking through the park below. “Our favorite part”, Jessica tells CNBC Make It, “was watching the firework show in front of the castle and then when it was over, walking right into the castle up to the suite for the night.”
But don’t reach for your credit card just yet. The suite, which offers guests a chance to stay in the center of Magic Kingdom, is by invitation only. Reportedly, Disney has turned down large sums from people eager to stay. When asked to describe the overall experience, Jessica, a lifelong Disney fan, says it was amazing.

29、The Liangzhu ruins in Hangzhou, pointing to an established Chinese civilisation 5,000 years ago, have been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. Every Chinese child is taught at school that the country's civilisation is 5,000 years old, but proving this beyond doubt has been a problem.
Now, a jade artifact(玉器)named “King of Cong”, found in the Liangzhu city ruins near Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, has provided an answer. Accordingto radiocarbon dating(放射性碳定年法),the 6.5kg object is 5,300 years old. It is one ofthe largest objects among all Cong from Liangzhu. The piece has now won greater global recognition.

According to studies led by Liu Bin, director of the Zhejiang Provincial Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, the inner part of theancient city ruins covers 2.8 square kilometers, about five times the area of the Forbidden City in Beijing, and the outer city spreads across 6.3 square kilometers. 32、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
The other day, I was driving home, a little upset because I hated working at the weekend. On the way, I decided to grab some veggies in the nearby greengrocer’s. Since there was still thin ice on the road, I took a glance at the rear mirror to make sure no pedestrians or vehicles came close, and slowly steered the wheel to the right. Then out of any of my expectancy my car bumped into an electric bike, giving out a harsh metallic clash. I collected myself and saw out of the window screen a boy lean on one side of the bike, one foot off the ground.
All of a sudden, a familiar scene flashed across my mind.
When I was in high school, I had fun riding my bike along the country road on sweltering and boring afternoons during summer holidays. Sometimes I carried my little brother to the only grocery store in the neighborhood where we could buy our favorite ice cream. Once we had an argument about what to buy. Seeing him leave the store in a temper, I jumped on the bike and tried to talk him into going back. Suddenly, he gave me a push and I inclined towards the middle of the road when a motorbike came in my face. I fell on the ground before I could see anything clearly. Luckily, I didn’t get hurt but still couldn’t rise to my feet. The motorist, a middle-aged man, ignoring his torn jeans, shed to check on me, “Are you okay? Your leg? Your foot?”
“I am all right, but...” I stared at him, terrified because I was sure he would ask for “big” sum of money for damage. Instead, he just let me go despite his wife’s protests. Guilty as I was, I was happy that I was spared. I was really grateful to the man for forgiving a silly kid who had made such a big mistake involuntarily.
