二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、DEAR READER,

When I was a little girl, growing up in Anamosa, Iowa, my favorite thing to do was read the same as today. So when I thought about what I wanted to be when I grew up, I figured I'd be a librarian. Our town librarian, Mrs. Tonne, was really important to me becoming me. The library had a two-book limit, but she knew I'd blow through those in just a few days, so she always let me check out a big stack. And when I was in fourth grade, our school librarian, Mrs. Ketelsen, sent some poems I'd written about dinosaurs to Highlights magazine. My first published writing!

At the University of Iowa, majoring in journalism, I quickly learned that I did not want to be a newspaper reporter. I'm shy about interviewing people, which amuses almost everyone who knows me and thinks I'm outgoing. (I am, but only with people I know!) So I was thrilled when I was selected for a summer internship at Reader's Digest.

Ten years after that, I came back to RD to work as an editor. I've worked at other magazines too, but I've spent most of my career here, reading magazines, newspapers, websites, and books for stories; writing articles; even choosing jokes.

This issue seems like the perfect one to introduce myself to you all. “The Tractor War” (page 92) takes me home to the Midwest. “Something to Sneeze (打喷嚏) At” (page 47) reminds me of all the sneezing I did when I moved to New York City and was suddenly allergic (过敏)to grasses and trees. “Pet Besties” (page 58) makes me think about my cats, brothers Reggie and Smokey, who are sitting together at the window as I write. I relate to lots of our stories this month, and I hope you do too. Enjoy!

    Jody L. Rohlena,

  • 28、Why are certain people so memorable, while some fade from our memories in time?

Several examples come to mind with my youngest son, Ken. He was always more comfortable around his dad’s friends than his own. He loved to spend time with them, fish with them, listen to their stories and just be with them.

He has experienced the loss of several really meaningful friendships over the past few years, and it has been very painful for him. One, Dr. George, was a neighbour and fishing buddy who would call to see if Ken could go fishing with him. Dr. George always said Ken was the son he never had and that it meant everything to him. He died very suddenly while fishing with all of his best buddies a few years ago. The huge hole that left in so many lives simply cannot be filled—for Ken it was immensely painful.

There was another fishing buddy of his dad’s, Frank, who was always fun to be around. Ken was very young then, but really enjoyed getting along with “the guys” when they were fishing. Frank and his family went to the Kens in the same week we did one year and the memory remains to this day. Cheerful and happy, he was able to laugh at himself and accept everyone’s abilities or lack of them, all qualities that impressed Ken so much.

When he became deadly ill, Ken drove from his home in North Carolina to Florida for an overnight visit with him. He died a short time later. The day after his funeral (葬礼), Frank came to Ken in a dream and asked if he would take care of his wife, Carol. To Ken this was very meaningful, and today they share a special bond that Frank somehow knew would be important for them both.

When you are raising children, you realise that some people become very important to them, draw them in, accept and respect them. It changes them.

B.felt the greatest pain to George’s death

  • 29、Physical education, or PE, isn’t required for all high school students. In some schools, it isn’t offered for some different reasons. But should high school students have physical education? The answer is certainly “yes”.

Today many people don’t do sports. But as is known to all, doing sports is very important for an adult. Teaching teens the importance of a healthy lifestyle and making fitness plans now can help teens put exercise in the first place as an adult.

High school isn’t that easy. Many students are under a lot of stress. Stress can be harmful to a student’s study and life. Doing sports can help them deal with stress better, helping them live a happier life at school.

PE classes act as a public health measure to encourage physical activities and help teens have healthy weights.

Not doing sports increases teens’ risk of developing many diseases. An active lifestyle offers a good way of protection from these health problems. As much as 75 percent of health-care spending goes toward treating medical conditions that can be hindered by lifestyle changes, according to the American College of Sports Medicine.

According to the President’s Council on Fitness,Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN), students who performed five hours of physical activity each week improved their academic (学业的) performance. Students from programs with no physical activity, who used the extra time for classroom study, did not perform better on tests than those who gave up some study time in support of physical education.

My brother and I were alone at home because my parents had gone for a meeting and they had left me in charge. I was doing my homework while my younger brother was watching TV. Suddenly the doorbell rang. My younger brother rushed to the door thinking that our parents had come home, so he unlocked the door and opened it.

Outside stood a tall man wearing a black raincoat and black rubber boots. He said he was a salesman and asked politely if our mother or father was at home.

Without thinking, my brother said, “No.” He asked if we would like to buy some comic books which he was selling.I quickly explained that we were not supposed to buy anything without our parent’s permission.

Then, as I was about to close the door, he forced his way into our house. He took out a knife and forced me to tie up my brother’s hands with some rope which he took out from his pocket. I tied up his hands but tied it in a special way so my brother could untie himself. The man then tied my hands up and locked both of us in the kitchen.

Soon, the man went upstairs to search the bedroom for valuables. I managed to teach my brother to untie the rope on his hands. He then untied me. I rushed to the telephone to call the police, but the line was dead. The doors were all locked from the outside and I did not have the keys to unlock them. Luckily, the robber forgot to lock the kitchen window. My brother managed to get out of the house through the window and I told him to go to the police station nearby and call for help.

After a while, my brother brought the police to our house.
