  • 27、My first week in the United States was a cultural shock. Everything felt new to me, including the style of conversation, the community I lived in and even the type of food people ate.

In our community back home, people eat mutton and chicken. Pork and beef are also common among other communities, but eating beef is taken as an illegal act. Unlike Nepal, eating beef is common in the West where most of the people follow religions other than Hinduism.

Food is just an example. When people move from one part of the world to another, they should adapt themselves to the new culture. For example, going to the bars or getting drunk is not acceptable in my community, but it is common in the US after a certain age.

I was raised in a traditional Hindu family in Nepal. We have a conservative opinion towards the marriage. Arranged marriages are common in which families decide whether the two should get married. Free love marriages are not allowed and are seldom seen. Same-sex marriage is also considered impossible.

To me, culture is a matter of habit. The culture is so deep-rooted in people's minds that most people are against changes. It is always easy for them to do what they have been doing throughout their life. It may be difficult for anyone to adapt to a new culture.

However, with travel being an unavoidable thing for modern people, one always conies across different cultures. In such cases, one should be respectful and adaptive to the culture other people follow. The world is always a better place to live in when we have spaces for people of all cultures.

【1】What does the Nepal law forbid people to eat?

    A.Pork.

    B.Beef.

    C.Chicken.

    D.Mutton.

【2】Which may be seen most in Nepal?

    A.Open marriages.

    B.Free love marriages.

    C.Same-sex marriage.

    D.Arranged marriages.

【3】What is the writer's attitude to different cultures?

    A.Negative.

    B.Respectful.

    C.Conservative.

    D.Indifferent.

【4】What can we learn from the passage?

    A.Most westerners believe in Hinduism.

B.Getting drunk in Nepal is acceptable.

C.Anyone can enter the bars in the US.

D.The writer came across a cultural shock.

  • 28、   What you do each morning affects your entire day. The choices that we repeatedly make determine the life we live.【1】

Manage your energy, not your time.

If you think about it, you’ll probably realize that you are better at doing certain tasks at certain times. For example, my creative energy is the highest in the morning, so that's when I do my writing each day. However, I spend my afternoons on phone calls and emails, which don't need my creative energy to be high.【2】What task is that energy best suited for?

    Prepare the night before.

It is really necessary to spend a few minutes each night organizing your to-do list for tomorrow. When I do it, I'll outline the article I'm going to write next day and develop a short list of the most important items for me to do.【3】

    【4】

Sounds simple, yet nobody does it. It took me a while to get over the urge to open my inbox, but finally I realized that everything can wait a few hours. Nobody is going to email you about a true emergency (a death in the family, etc.), so leave your email alone for the first few hours of each day.

    Turn your phone off.

This reduces the urge to check text messages. This simple method reduces the possibility that you waste time on meaningless tasks. You’ve got 25, 000 mornings.【5】

    A.Don’t open email until noon.

B.What will you do with each one?

C.Leave your phone in another room.

D.What type of energy do you have in the morning?

E.Try your best to finish your work in the morning.

F.It takes 10 minutes at night and saves 3 hours next day.

G.Here are the methods that I've found to get the most out of my morning.

  • 29、Ask someone what they have done to help the environment recently and they will almost certainly mention recycling. Recycling in the home is very important of course. However, being forced to recycle often means we already have more material than we need. We are dealing with the results of that over-consumption in the greenest way possible, but it would be far better if we did not bring so much material home in the first place.

The total amount of packaging increased by 12% between 1999 and 2005. It now makes up a third of a typical household’s waste in the UK. In many supermarkets nowadays food items are packaged twice with plastic and cardboard.

Too much packaging is doing serious damage to the environment. The UK, for example, is running out of it for carrying this unnecessary waste. If such packaging is burnt, it gives off greenhouse gases which go on to cause the greenhouse effect. Recycling helps, but the process itself uses energy. The solution is not to produce such items in the first place. Food waste is a serious problem, too. Too many supermarkets encourage customers to buy more than they need. However, a few of them are coming round to the idea that this cannot continue, encouraging customers to reuse their plastic bags, for example.

But this is not just about supermarkets. It is about all of us. We have learned to associate packaging with quality. We have learned to think that something unpackaged is of poor quality. This is especially true of food. But it also applies to a wide range of consumer products, which often have far more packaging than necessary.

There are signs of hope. As more of us recycle, we are beginning to realize just how much unnecessary material we are collecting. We need to face the wastefulness of our consumer culture, but we have a mountain to climb.

【1】What does the underlined word “over-consumption” refer to?

    A.Using too much packaging.

    B.Recycling too much waste.

    C.Making more products than necessary.

D.Having more material than is needed.

【2】The author uses figures in Paragraph 2 to show ________.

A.the tendency of cutting household waste

    B.the increase of packaging recycling

    C.the rapid growth of supermarkets

    D.the fact of packaging overuse

【3】What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?

A.Unpackaged products are of bad quality.

    B.Supermarkets care more about packaging.

C.It is improper to judge quality by packaging.

D.Other products are better packaged than food.

【4】What can we learn from the last paragraph?

    A.Fighting wastefulness is difficult.

    B.Needless material is mostly recycled.

    C.People like collecting recyclable waste.

D.The author is proud of his consumer culture.

五、书面表达 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 32、阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。

It was my twelfth birthday, and what I really wanted was a new bicycle. But I knew my family couldn’t afford one.

A new bike was just a dream, so I wanted a nightstand (床头柜). I figured that at least I would have a safe place to keep my private things. So I asked my parents for a nightstand with lockable drawer (抽屉).

We went to the secondhand furniture store and found an old, dark brown nightstand. It didn’t look too cool, but at least it had drawers that I could keep locked. I decided that I would paint it to make it look better.

After we took it home, I was getting ready to paint it. When I pulled the drawers out, I felt something stuck (卡住) at the back of the bottom drawer. I reached in all the way to the back and was surprised to find a bag.

When opening the bag, I realized that there were some papers in it which were some kind of official-looking documents (文件). And beneath were a bunch of dollar bills! Talk about finding a treasure! And on my birthday!

I went ahead and read the papers, which turned out to be a will (遗嘱). Some old lady was leaving her savings to her son and grandchildren. The old lady must have died and nobody knew the money. Her family donated the nightstand to the secondhand furniture store and it was now in my hands.

I counted the money, over 1,000 dollars in total. I was going crazy. With this money I could buy the coolest bicycle. I could even buy bicycles for my younger brothers. Maybe I could also get my parents a car.

What a dilemma! I could keep it and get all kinds of things for myself and my family. Or I could give it all back. “Somebody helps me with this!” I begged. But I really didn’t need anyone else to give me the answer. I already knew right from wrong. I decided not to fail this test. It was a test of honor-my honor.
