  • 26、Eric Carle, the author of over 70 books for children, passed away at the age of 91. Mr. Carle’s lively, creative, and colorful works have been loved by children around the world. “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” is Mr. Carle’s best-known book.

Eric Carle was born in New York in 1929. His parents were German. As he grew up, Eric spent a lot of time with his father, who would take him out walking in nature. His father would show him small living things, explaining their life cycles and filling the young boy’s head with wonder. Eric thought this helped explain why so many of his books are about nature, bugs and animals.

When Eric was 6, the family moved back to Germany because his mother missed her home. Life in Germany was unbelievably sad and difficult for Eric and his family during World War Ⅱ. After the war, Eric studied art in school.

In 1952, Eric moved back to New York, where he got a job at the New York Times. After author Bill Martin Jr. saw a drawing that Eric had done in the paper, he asked Eric to illustrate his book, “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?”. The book came out in 1967 and was a big hit, which also made Eric popular. Eric continued to work with Mr. Martin for years. Though he also created pictures for books with other authors, Eric created many of his most well-loved books completely on his own.

Most of Mr. Carle’s books are meant for younger readers. He said that he wanted to help make school a fun, welcoming place. “I believe that children are naturally creative and eager to learn,” he said. “I want to show them that learning is really both attractive and fun.”

  • 27、Every year, millions of Americans see their personal information leak into the wrong hands. Maybe there’s spyware on their computer, or a service they use suffered a security reach, leaving customers at the risk of exposure. Or perhaps their password is easy to guess.

Don’t fear: You can easily set up proper defenses. Here’s how.

    ● Clean Your Computer and Smartphone

Before you put new security measures into place, make sure your devices are as spotless as possible. This means installing a good antivirus(反病毒程序)program and taking the time to clear out any spy — or malware(恶意软件)that may have already infected your system. These days, it’s also worth it to make sure your phone is safe from viruses. iPhones are less likely to be targeted by spyware, but Android users should download the Lookout app to scan their devices and ensure everything is as it should be.

    ● Secure Your WiFi

It’s fairly easy for potential criminals to gain access to your information if they’re able to share your connection —that’s why you want to be careful when using public WiFi. Even though you put security measures into place a couple of years ago, it’s a good idea to refresh your settings.

    ● Use passwords

What you’ve heard is true: Passwords should use a variety of special characters, numerals, letters, and cases when possible.

    ● Check the shopping security

Take care when shopping online. Always check the security symbols when using an online site for shopping. If the lock icon encryption (加密) is not there, do not give out credit details. Also, check that the site is legal — never go to a site from a random email and start shopping online.

Keep a separate credit card just for online shopping. This will make it easier to cancel if something bad does happen and your other credit card for “in real life” can still be used uninfluenced.

Don’t store information on any store’s website. It may be convenient but it’s also a possible loss to you if the site is hacked(非法侵入).

【1】This passage is mainly about ___________.

    A.ways of avoiding identity theft

B.tips of freeing computers from viruses

    C.measures to ensure network security

D.steps to keep track of passwords

A.clear out everything in the system

B.make a random selection of network

    C.get rid of potential spyware

    D.refresh the infected system

【3】According to the passage, the risk of exposing personal information may possibly be caused by _______.

    A.the applications of antivirus programs

B.the practice of using public WiFi

    C.the difficult access to passwords

D.the separate credit card for online shopping

  • 28、For engineer Liang Kaiyu, one thing is clear: What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Losing his left leg above the knee in an explosion(爆炸)when testing his self-built motor in January 2020, the 30-year-old used his engineering skills to make his prosthetic limb(假肢)more comfortable and powerful than a real leg.

Since late 2020, he has upgraded his high-tech prosthesis, including fitting a shock absorber and installing a charger port. “Although China has millions of amputees(被截肢者), people with a prosthesis are still a rare sight on the street. My video may, in some way, encourage them,” the man says, adding that prostheses can look cool.

Before the explosion, as an engineer, building things was a hobby in his spare time. When he saw that a foreign engineer had developed an autonomous e-bike, he found the materials online and decided to build one himself. It took him more than a year to finally make it, but he was not satisfied and, in January 2020, he tried to better it. “I tried to use larger parts to make the self-driving function more dependable, but I made a mistake and the explosion occurred,” Liang recalls.

“Physical recovery is the first step. Psychological acceptance matters more, which takes much longer,” Liang says. Liang’s focus is now on making the new leg comfortable. To know about the structure and system of the prosthetics better, he disassembled some secondhand prosthetic limbs that were made in China and abroad, which cost him hundreds of thousands of yuan. “I want to let more people know about these high-tech prosthetics, which are comfortable and safer to wear. It can build confidence with every step,” Liang says.

  • 29、African countries have retrieved some historic relics(遗物), which reflects the important development of human society, from European countries.
