  • 26、Things to do in London this weekend

Take a look at our lists of exactly what is opening up in London.

    Lambeth Country Show

The festival of countryside won’t be going ahead in its usual home of Brockwell Park this year. And it is being held online instead. All your favourite events of the fair will be part of the virtual edition (虚拟版本) this weekend, including the highly expected Vegetable Sculpture Competition and the other usual flower show competitions, craft markets and music performances.

Walthamstow Garden Party in the Air

The free two-day festival in Lloyd Park will take place online this year. Over the weekend you can watch music and dance performances, join a virtual beer tasting from Wild Card Brewery or take part in online workshops from crafting to Tai Chi. Don’t miss the most interesting part of the weekend: East London Radio’s first-ever live show taking place across the weekend with live music and behind-the-scenes chats with local artists.

    Columbia Road Flower Market

The Columbia Road Flower Market is reopening this weekend. However, it will look and feel quite different. Stall (摊位) will be spread out, nearby roads will be closed and there will be a limit on the number of people who can enter the market.

    The Brixton Courtyard

A new beer garden is opening in Brixton with DJ sets, wine tastings and more, in a safe environment. The venue (举办地点), Brixton Jamm, has repaired and improved its outdoor space with booths and picnic benches. On Saturday, sit down to listen to old soldiers and all-round hero Moxie.

  • 27、【1】 They create carbon dioxide and shade. They provide shelter to animals and insects. The wood they provide is used for buildings and other products we humans use and need.

Trees are so important that some people have made it their goal to protect them. We can call these people “tree hugger”. It describes people who support the protection of forests. Today, the term “tree hugger” describes a person who is an environmentalist. 【2】 For example, someone who wants to save a rare butterfly species or cut greenhouse gases could also be described as a tree hugger.

However, calling someone a “tree hugger” is not always seen as a praise. 【3】 “Tree hugger” described someone who was overly concerned about protecting trees, animals and other parts of the natural world.

Some tree huggers do go to extremes to protect trees. Take, for example, an American woman named Julia Lorraine Hill. For 738 days from December 10, 1997 and December 18, 1999, Hill lived in Luna, a Redwood tree in northern California’s Humboldt County. Luna is huge, measuring nearly 61 meters tall and about 12 meters across, which has stood in Humboldt County for more than 1,000 years. 【4】 So, Hill did what any extreme tree hugger would—she moved in! As the website explains, Hill’s main goal was “to bring international attention to the importance of protecting and restoring natural resources.” So, we can safely call Hill a tree hugger. 【5】

A.Trees give so much to the world.

B.Human beings should all protect trees.

C.In earlier times, in fact, it was used as an insult(辱骂).

D.And I’m sure that she would consider that the highest of praises.

E.They want to protect nature and the environment - but not just the trees.

F.Nowadays, the environmental problems are more serious than in the history.

G.But that did not stop the Pacific Lumber Company from wanting to cut it down.

When my daughters reached the third and fourth grades, I sometimes allowed them to walk to and from school alone if the weather permitted. One warm spring day, a small friend followed them home after school. This friend had short legs and long floppy ears, with a furry coat and tiny spots across her nose. She was the cutest puppy I had ever seen and my girls begged me to keep her.

She was not more than twelve weeks old. She had no identifying marks of any sort. I didn’t know what to do. I thought about running an ad in the lost and found but l really didn’t want to. It would break the kids’ hearts if someone should show up. Besides, her owners should have watched her more closely, I thought.

By the end of the week she was part of our family. She was very clever and good with the girls. The Following week something told me to check the lost and found section in the local paper. One particular ad caught my attention and my heart sank at what I read. Someone was searching for a lost puppy near our grade school. They sounded desperate. My hand shook. I could not ask myself to pick up the phone.

Instead, I pretend I hadn’t seen the ad. I quickly put the paper aside and tried to ignore it. I never say anything about it to the kids or my husband.

By now we had named the puppy. She looked like a Molly, so we called her Molly. She followed the girls everywhere they went. When they went outside, she was one step behind them. When they did housework she was there to help.

There was only one problem with this perfect dog: my conscience (良心) was bothering me. I knew in my heart I had to call that number and see if our Molly was the puppy they were desperately looking for.

    注意:

    1.所续写短文的词数应为120左右;
