二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Sending human travelers to Mars would require scientists and engineers to overcome a range of technological and safety obstacles. One of them is the enormous risk posed by particle radiation from the sun, distant stars and galaxies.

Answering two key questions would go a long way toward overcoming that: Would particle radiation pose too serious a threat to human life throughout a round trip to the red planet? And, could the very timing of a mission to Mars help protect astronauts from the radiation?

In a new article published in the journal Space Weather, an international team of space scientists with researchers from UCLA, answers those two questions.

That is, humans should be able to safely travel to and from Mars, provided that the spacecraft has adequate shielding (防护) and the round trip is shorter than approximately four years. And the timing of a human mission to Mars would indeed make a difference: The scientists determined that the best time for a flight to leave Earth would be when solar activity is at its peak, because the most dangerous and energetic particles from distant galaxies are deflected (偏移) during solar maximum.

Imaginably, the average flight to Mars takes about nine months, so it is reasonable that a human mission could reach the planet and return to Earth in less than two years, according to Yuri Shprits, a UCLA research geophysicist and co-author of the paper.:

“This study shows that although space radiation imposes (追使) strict limitations on how heavy the spacecraft can be and the time of launch, and it presents technological difficulties for human missions to Mars, such a mission is viable,” said Shprits, who also is head of space physics and space weather at GFZ Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam,Germany.

【1】What are the two questions about?

A.Getting rid of the technological obstacles.

B.Making astronauts return from Mars safely.

    C.Protecting astronauts from particle radiation.

D.Launching the spacecraft to Mars in shielding.

【2】Which decides the time when humans fly to Mars?

    A.The distance to stars.

B.The length of the round trip.

    C.The size of particles.

    D.The degree of solar activity.

【3】What does the underlined word “viable” in Paragraph 6 mean?

    A.Challenging.

    B.Workable.

    C.Rewarding.

    D.Affordable.

【4】What is the best title for the passage?

A.Two Questions, a Help to Humans?

B.Particle Radiation, an Obstacle to Mars?

C.Travelling to Mars, an Impossible Mission?

D.A Round Trip to Mars, Technological Advance?

  • 22、   Many of the New World supermarkets in New Zealand are letting their fruits and vegetables go packaging-free. In an innovative project pioneered by the New World supermarket located at Bishopdale in Christchurch, this change has led to an amazing increase in sales according to The New Zealand Herald. "We monitor them year on year and after we introduced the idea, we noticed sales of spring onions, for example, had increased by 300 percent," Bishopdale’s owner Nigel Bond told NZ Herald. "There may have been other factors at play, but we noticed similar increases in other vegetables." Bond explained, "When we first set up the new shelving, our customers were blown away. It reminded me of when I was a kid going to the fruiterer with my Dad you could smell the fresh oranges and spring onions. By wrapping products in plastic, we sanitize and keep people away from this experience, it was a huge regret for us."

This new project is part of the movement to do away with all single-use plastic packaging. There are actually government regulations that went into effect on July 1, 2019 for a phase out(强制逐步淘汰) of plastic bags by all retailers. Plastics take up as much as 20 percent of New Zealand's landfill space to 252,000 tons per year.

The idea for the unwrapped produce came from Bond. He went on a study tour in the US and was impressed by the sales at Whole Foods. Then he spoke to growers and suppliers who were more than happy to look at different ways to provide produce without the plastic packaging.

Now, most of the produce is plastic-free but some items - including grapes and some tomatoes - still come wrapped in plastic. Nine New World supermarkets in the South Island have followed the Bishop dales stores example. And New World is testing another new way to BYO (=bring your own) containers for the meat and seafood departments. All of this is a part of the supermarket chain commitment to sustainable practices.

【1】What's the result of making vegetables go packaging-free?

A.An innovative project was carried out.

    B.More vegetables have been sold.

    C.Nigel Bond monitored sales stricter.

D.Other factors were found to play the role.

【2】Which of the following is the content of regulations going into effect in 2019?

A.Not using all single-use plastic packaging.

    B.Limiting the development of retailers.

    C.Stopping using plastic bags gradually.

D.Building more New Zealand's landfill space.

【3】What made Bond have the idea for the unwrapped produce?

    A.Whole Foods’ sales.

    B.His study in the college.

    C.His impression from work.

    D.Growers and suppliers' requirements.

【4】What can be the suitable title for the text?

    A.New World's Fruits and Vegetables Going Packaging-Free.

B.New Zealand's Supermarkets Calling for Environmental protection.

C.New Zealand's Contribution to Reducing the Use of Plastics.

D.New World's Supermarkets' New Ways to Promote Sales.

  • 23、In France, a lot of energy goes into one’s personal appearance. Clothing is a big part of Parisian culture; after all, this is one of the world fashion capitals.

Parisians like simple, classic pieces that are timeless. Must-have pieces such as a good pair of jeans, a trench coat, and basic knitwear are always good to have on hand. Parisians don’t really like clothing to be colorful or ostentatious, especially not something to be worn for an ordinary day out. Black, white and different shades of beige are common sightings around Paris’ streets.

Classic goes for shoes, too. A quality pair of leather boots, loafers (休闲鞋) or heels can be paired with anything, provided they are in a shade of black or brown. Comfort is key, since most Parisians do a lot of walking. However, you’ll rarely notice Parisians wearing open-toed shoes. Younger generation Parisians are becoming part of sports shoes culture, though it is unlikely to see an elder Parisian wearing any form of them in public.

Speaking of berets (贝雷帽), a decent beret is an important item for most Parisians. It would be far too general to say that all Parisians are fond of the beret, but the vast majority can appreciate their place in fashion history. They also love having a way of covering their hair when unexpected wind or rain happens in the city of light!

Parisians are not about logos (商标). Contrary to Italians, Parisians prefer not to see any kind of printed logo on clothing, handbags or shoes, unless it is extremely small and subtle. Hoodies with an oversized logo printed down the front is a no-no. Something to keep in mind is that just because Parisians are not into logos, this does not mean they are not into name brands (名牌). On the contrary, the French love luxury fashion and name branded clothing. Parisians know their brands, and they don’t need logos to tell them when something is of a particular fashion house, or when something is real or fake.

【1】What does the underlined word “ostentatious” mean in the second paragraph?

    A.Simple in design.

    B.Of an old style.

    C.Enhancing creativity.

    D.Attracting attention.

【2】What will an elder Parisian probably wear in public?

    A.White boots.

    B.Black loafers.

    C.Open-toed shoes.

    D.Comfortable sports shoes.

【3】How do Parisians like the beret?

A.Most of them like to have one.

    B.They think it too old-fashioned.

C.They think it goes well with long hair.

D.Most of them wear it for an ordinary day out.

【4】What can we learn from the last paragraph?

    A.Parisians don’t like name brands.

    B.Parisians aren’t into oversized logos.

C.Parisians don’t care about what is in fashion.

D.Parisians prefer not to see any logo on clothing.

  • 24、   An afternoon nap could improve your cognitive abilities, study says. Taking an afternoon snooze (打盹) could keep your brain sharp, a new study has said. Adults aged 60 and older who took afternoon naps showed signs of better mental sharpness compared to those who didn’t nap, according to a study published in General Psychiatry earlier this week.

Researchers analyzed napping habits in 2,214 older Chinese people and measured their cognitive abilities using several cognitive tests. Participants took the Mini-Mental State Examination and the Beijing version of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, both of which test for memory, language and other cognitive abilities. In every category listed in the study, nappers tested statistically higher on average compared to their non-napping counterparts.

Researchers did not gather data from people under 60, so a connection cannot be drawn between napping and younger generations. The study also noted that there are conflicting studies about the benefits and risks of napping.

Sleeping behaviors can be affected by a large number of factors. Daily routines, medication use and sleep disorders can all play a role in how frequently someone takes a nap.

Neubauer recommended taking a shorter “power nap” of up to 20 minutes to decrease the chances of changing into slow-wave sleep, which makes people feel very tired when they wake up. Napping can be a healthy part of an older adult’s day, but make sure sleepiness isn’t due to a treatable nighttime sleep disorder. Older individuals who want to do all they can to preserve their cognitive functioning should deal with nighttime sleep first.

【1】What do we know about the afternoon nap from paragraph 1?

A.An afternoon nap could refresh adults.

B.An afternoon nap could refresh people aged 60 and older.

C.An afternoon nap could improve people’s mental health.

D.An afternoon nap could help people get smarter than ever before.

【2】From the text, what can we learn about the researchers’ study?

A.They didn’t gather data from participants.

B.They analyzed 2,204 older participants’ napping habits.

C.They measured participants’ cognitive abilities by listing examples.

D.They did a test about memory and other cognitive abilities.

【3】What is the text mainly about?

A.The benefits of the afternoon nap.

B.The data about the afternoon nap.

C.The study about the afternoon nap.

D.The benefits and risks of the afternoon nap.

【4】In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?

    A.Culture & Education.

    B.Fashion & Entertainment.

    C.Food & Nutrition.

    D.Military & Science.
