21、Standing on the shore of a lake, I can’t help wondering about the tens or hundreds of thousands of small rocks that surround my boots. They were all created from hard surfaces, their edges softening over time.
And I wonder, can we learn from a pile of rocks?
Even the tallest mountains have worm down; none are as tall as they were 1000 years ago. And much like a rock, I’ve found my attitude has softened and my desire to better understand others has expanded with each trip around the sun.
Once I was a sharp rock covered in pointy edges. Today, after decades of the waters of life flowing quickly over me, my edges are softer and more understanding I’m less likely to judge and more interested in learning how we can exist together.
But I’m not a rock. I’m a human being filled with all the drama built into my DNA.
Two years ago, while traveling in the Pacific Northwest, I watched a restaurant owner ask several people to leave for not wearing masks. Not forceful and not rude. On the door read a sign: “Please wear a mask before entering our restaurant. We don’t like it either, but let’s all do what we can to get through this together.”
The group of young men wished to argue about the note.
I sat watching, understanding both sides. I’ve been those guys before, using my youthful edges to chip away at the world. What I lost, however, was the ability to grow from experiences by looking through the eyes of others. In learning to be more open, I’ve also found more happiness and success.
You can put more rounded rocks in a jar than those with sharp edges. The former look for ways to adjust and make room for others; the latter never give an inch to accommodate others.
Time, like the waters rolling against once sharp stones, changes us by washing away our resistance to seeing the world from another’s point of view.
I placed a rounded stone into my jacket pocket. Mother Nature is holding class again.

22、A new study has found that safety equipment could prevent more than 40 percent of crashes in which tractor-trailers rear-end (追尾) other vehicles. The survey also found that when the rear-end crashes happened, safety systems were able to cut speeds by over 50 percent, resulting in fewer injuries and less damage.
The survey was a project of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a research group supported by companies that insure owners of motor vehicles. The institute’s Eric Teoh did the study. He examined crash records from 62 trucking companies that operate tractor-trailers or other large trucks. He found about 2000 crashes. Those accidents involved vehicles that travelled more than 3.2 billion kilometers from 2017 to 2019.
The safety systems use cameras, radar and other sensors to watch the roadway. Some are designed to warn drivers of dangers, while more complex systems will stop the trucks.
Trucks with crash warning systems reduced rear crashes by 44 percent, while automatic emergency braking systems cut rear crashes by 41 percent, the study found. The institute called on the federal government to require such systems on new large trucks. It noted that many truck operators are already adding emergency braking on their own. The study found that trucks equipped with a crash warning system had 22 percent fewer crashes than those without the technology. Trucks with emergency braking system had 12 percent fewer crashes.
Teoh said the findings could be valuable for trucking companies and drivers who are considering whether to get safety devices on their next vehicles. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a statement it is nearly finished with its own study on driver assist technology on heavy vehicles. It has been urging the voluntary use of systems such as emergency braking.
In the United States, there are currently no requirements for either system. In Europe, automatic emergency braking with forward collision warning has been required by the European Union on most new large trucks since late 2013, the institute said.
【1】Why is safety equipment advised to be used?
A.To completely avoid rear-end crashes.
B.To reduce injuries and damage.
C.To prevent all traffic accidents.
D.To travel further more comfortably.
【2】How did Teoh carry out the survey?
A.By interviewing drivers.
B.By consulting some companies.
C.By comparing different trucks.
D.By studying the data collected.
【3】What does Paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.The benefit of safety systems.
B.The introduction of the study.
C.The types of safety systems.
D.The principle of warning systems.
【4】What can be inferred about the emergency braking systems?
A.They are required to be used in America.
B.The European Union urges all drivers to use them.
C.Some truck drivers are volunteering to use them.
D.They will be used by all drivers.
23、We’ve all been there: You’re at a dull work meeting or presentation, and your mind keeps wandering to what to eat for lunch, your weekend plans, or what’s going on with the new season of Stranger Things.
Don’t feel so bad about all your daydreaming. Mind-wandering may be a sign of intelligence and creativity, according to a new study in the journal Neuropsychologia. And as long as your performance at work doesn’t suffer when your mind drifts, daydreaming may not be such a bad thing after all, the study authors say.
Researchers at Georgia Institute of Technology wanted to study what happens to people’s brain patterns when they’re told to lie still and do nothing—a prime opportunity for mind-wandering. So they asked 112 study participants to do just that: lie in an MRI machine while staring at a fixed point for five minutes.
The research team used those readings to identify which parts of the brain worked together during this type of awake but resting state, and they also compared the readings to tests the participants took to measure their creative and intellectual abilities. In addition, the participants filled out a questionnaire about how much their mind wandered in daily life.
The researchers made several interesting connections. People who reported more frequent daydreaming during the day scored higher on creative and intellectual tests. Their MRIs also showed they had more efficient brain systems-meaning different regions of the brain were more in pace with each other—compared to people who reported less frequent mind-wandering.
The finding that mind-wandering is associated with intelligence was somewhat surprising, says lead author Christine Godwin, a psychology PhD candidate. That’s because previous research has linked mind-wandering to poorer performance on memory and reading-comprehension tests, lower SAT scores, negative mood, and mental health disorders.
【1】What’s the author’s attitude towards daydreaming?
A. Unconcerned.
B. Approving.
C. Cautious.
D. Doubtful.
【2】What can the participants do during the experiment?
A. Tell lies.
B. Do some reading.
C. Lie and stare.
D. Answer some questions.
【3】What’s the finding of the experiment?
A. Daydreaming may result in good memory.
B. The finding is contradictory to the previous research.
C. Daydreaming is somewhat associated with mental health.
D. The more you are mind-wandering, the less intelligent you are.
【4】What’s the best title for the passage?

C. Daydreaming is Harmful to The Brain
D. An Experiment Report on Daydreaming
24、A new and exciting innovation will enable people with hearing loss to see conversations in real time. Using augmented reality(AR)glasses and a smartphone, hearing-impaired (有听力障碍的) people will soon be able to participate and engage in conversations.
XRAI glasses were developed by Dan Scarfe after he spent a Christmas dinner with his family. Scarfe saw his 97-year-old hearing-impaired grandfather sitting alone in silence while the rest of the family members were animated in conversation. His light bulb moment came when he remembered his grandfather watching closed-caption TV and realized that AR glasses could be used for subtitles (字幕).
Scarfe got to work, partnering with Nreal, an AR glasses manufacturer. Six months later, the team unveiled XRAI glasses. The glasses are connected to a smartphone that receives the audio (音频) from a microphone, processes it, and then uses software technology to transform it into closed captions.
The company is now testing the glasses in the UJK and hopes to complete their pilot by the end of this month. The UK was selected as a testing ground as over 13 million adults in Britain have hearing loss. However, when the product goes global, it may transform the lives of some 430 million people. This represents 5 percent of the world’s population and includes 70 million people with total hearing loss.
This is a game changer for the deaf and is applauded by hearing loss charity RNID and Deaf Kidz International. Mark Atkinson of the charity wore them, saying, “As a deaf person myself, I was blown away by this technology. When I tried on the glasses, I was astonished that real-time subtitles enabled me to engage and participate as never before."
For Scarfe and his startup, this is only the beginning. After the testing, XRAI will work with users’ feedback, hoping to make the product available to the public soon. He also imagines using smart glasses to translate languages, understand accents and voice tones.
