Or, have you breathed a sigh of relief when you recognize that one of your lucky choices ended up much better off than you might have been, if things had gone a different way?
【1】It is the birthplace of emotions such as regret, gratitude, and guilt. Picturing an alternative outcome to what has actually happened in one’s life holds an irresistible appeal, even when it leads to unhappiness. It is therefore not surprising that it has become a hot topic of research in social psychology.
Counterfactual thinking often plays out in real-time on national television after a natural disaster.【2】 The victims are usually shaken and highly emotional, and they have often lost everything that they owned. And yet, we commonly hear them use words such as “lucky” or “grateful” to describe their feelings.
【3】 If the person had really been lucky, wouldn’t they still have a house and have been spared from all of the grief they must now endure? Some psychologists have argued that one of the benefits of counterfactual thinking is that it can be an effective tool for making us more resilient (迅速复苏的). 【4】 That paves the way for positive emotions that might help them through a very dark time in their lives.
Counterfactual thinking is simply part of who we are. 【5】 Many psychologists believe that it exists to helps us crystallize (变明确) the goals that are most important to us and to improve our ability to wisely choose future courses of action.

22、Most parents will tell you that travelling internationally with kids is no day at the beach.
“For families with young children, spending a long period of time in an airport terminal can be a kind of pain, partly because of all the waiting around but also because the airport is just a stop — usually the first stop — in a long journey,” said Suzanne Rowan Kelleher, a family travel expert and managing editor of MiniTime.cn.
But a new beach-themed play area for children in the international terminal at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) gives kids a chance to have some fun and burn off some of their energy before they get on a flight.
First opening on Thursday, in the new Tom Bradley International Terminal with a party featuring the LAX therapy dogs, some gift bags and cupcakes, the 971-square-foot, post-security play area is titled “LAX Beach.” Open to kids aged 2 to 8, the play space has soft, sculpted foam pieces that resemble waves, surfboards, beach toys and dolphins and is keeping in with the terminal’s overall architectural theme, which was inspired by the Pacific Ocean to the west of the airport.
“I think it is safe to say that happy children make better flights,” said Los Angeles World Airports Executive Director Gina Marie Lindsey. “And with the opening of LAX Beach, we are going to see a lot more happy children on our international flights.”
There are likely going to be a lot more happy adults seated around those children on international flights as well with LAX Beach appearing in the international terminal.
The play space — the first children’s play area in any LAX terminal — was built for the Los Angeles World Airports by terminal management company Westfield for $350,000. In addition to the beach-themed foam pieces, there’s a slide, an interactive light table and lifesavers for children to crawl through.
The nearby seating overlooking the space offers a place for parents to relax and keep an eye on their kids.
“Having a kid-centric place where kids can work off a bit of energy can be a real lifesaver,” said Rowan Kelleher. “The beach theme attempts to offer a sense of place, too, which is nice.”
【1】What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Most parents with their children around prefer to travel by air.

23、Do you like running enough to make it a habit? Temey Wolfgram does; she has made running a lifelong career and isn’t stopping.
In February, the 16-year-old from Woodbury High School, Minnesota, US, competed at the 2020 US Olympic Trials. She finished the marathon (42,J95 km) with a tune of 2:42:47 as the youngest competitor in the race and ranked 76th out of 390 runners.
Then, in November, Wolfgram, who turned 17, broke the Women's American Junior marathon record with her time of 2:31:49. The old record was 2:34:32, which had stood since 1984. During the run, Wolfgram once hit a wall pretty hard, but she overcame it to finish. “I guess I can say I gave it my all,” she told Runner's World. “When I finished, all I was thinking was that I was super happy,” Wolfgram said.
This was only her third marathon. In 2018, when Wolfgram was 15 years old, she ran her first marathon just because she wanted to see if she was capable of doing it. “I believed that I would get faster as the distances got longer... and I'm still glad that I did it.”
When preparing for that first marathon, she ran up to 120 miles (about 190 kilometers) per week. Although her parents didn't have any background in running, they helped Wolfgram train. At first, her dad would take her out in the morning and run about 13 miles. The distance would gradually increase each day. 24、Dotted with sequins (亮片) and glitter (闪亮小物件), the royal blue dance dress enchanted (使心醉) in the spot tonight. The girl wearing the costume danced on the floor. As the drumbeat changed, the diamond fringes (云图条纹) of the dress flew in tune with the girl’s changing steps. Finally, she struck a neat pose onstage before the audience.
The girl described is actually me. I have learned Latin dance since childhood. However, into adolescence, conflicts brought by Latin dance overwhelmed me. The fair skin and slim bodies of mainstream beauty stand in contrast to what Latin dance pursues: power and wildness. As a blooming (妙龄的) girl, I long for beauty admired by all. But a girl like me with strong muscles stands out in the crowd. Disturbed feelings caused by unkind judgment piled up in my heart. It was so much that I chose to compromise.
Luckily, the match for the Chinese youth team in Vietnam shifted my attention, dragging me out of anxiety. Players from different countries gathered together to fight for the honors. And I was no exception. Even though I had exerted (尽力表现) myself, I was shocked to find that I didn’t get the score I expected. The reason, obviously, lay in my diet. With my reduced intake of protein and carbohydrates, I visibly lost a lot of weight, but at the cost of a sense of power and speed in dance.
In between games, I saw a little girl from Europe take firm and powerful steps in the competition. There was an inward intensity (强度) and outward charm, which caused my attention. Her beauty came from her full muscles. The confidence in her eyes was unstoppable. Sure enough, she won the top prize. Full of admiration,I made her acquaintance and shared my dilemma. I can’t recall the conversation, but I do remember the confidence that inspired me and some of her words: “Just be yourself.”
Looking back. I’m still the dancing girl, but my heart has grown lighter. Something within me is dancing.
