二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Our Planet Earth is full of life and has incredible biodiversity. Biological Diversity or Biodiversity is the base of human existence and fundamental to its well-being. Species are the building blocks of this life on Earth, and it is believed that the species that are at present globally found have continuously evolved over 65 million years since the Last Mass Extinction. However, the nature and extent of our planet’s biodiversity at all levels have not been completely evaluated yet. Thus, the exact number of species found in the world remains unknown. Over the years, with the advancement of scientific knowledge and the discovery of more new species, it has been approximated that there are, at present, 10 million to 14 million species on Earth, of which 1. 2 million species have been data-based. This means that still more than 86% of the terrestrial(陆生的) and 91% of the marine species remain unknown.

Every year, taxonomists(分类学家)describe thousands of species, some of which are completely new to science, while in some cases, the species and subspecies are closely examined and determined whether they can be considered distinct species.

A study has revealed that over 99. 9% of all species amounting to more than 5 billion species that ever lived here, are believed to be extinct. At present, our planet houses millions of species, among which 86% live on land, 13% in the deep subsurface, and a mere 1% in the oceans. However, Biodiversity is not evenly distributed on Earth, and its number varies greatly on different continents.

The undiscovered and misidentified species slow our ability to understand patterns and changes in global biodiversity and the rate of species extinctions(灭绝). Even after several years of taxonomic studies, only 14% of terrestrial species and 9% of marine species have been officially added to the central database. Necessarily, some species will become extinct before researchers realize they ever existed.

【1】What does the underlined word “marine” mean in Paragraph 1?

    A.Rare.

    B.Oceanic.

    C.Endangered.

    D.Novel.

    【2】What do taxonomists usually do?

    A.Examine distribution of species.

    B.Compare species from subspecies.

C.Decide the situation of the species.

    D.Describe diversity of new-found species.

【3】Which of the following can describe the distribution of the Earth’s Biodiversity?

    A.Unequal.

    B.Accumulative.

    C.Average.

    D.Maximum.

【4】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?

A.The central database covers all species.

B.The rate of species extinctions is rather high.

C.Many undiscovered species have been extinct.

D.Humans know little about endangered species.

  • 22、You’re out on a hike, snacking on an apple, a banana, or some nuts. When you’re finished, all that’s left is a core, a peel, or a shell. “It’s natural,” you tell yourself, throwing it into the woods.

After all, food waste is biodegradable (可生物降解的). It’s not like you’re littering by throwing away a plastic bottle. 【1】

Food waste doesn’t break down as fast as you think

Most people know food waste is biodegradable. But fewer people are aware that orange and banana peels can take up to two years to break down in the wild, meaning they’re going to be staying in nature for a lot longer than you might think. And even if they eventually biodegrade, they can lead to a lot of serious problems.

    【2】

“ Animals have a super advanced sense of smell compared to us,” says biologist Jeff Marion. All human food can attract animals. This can then cause “attraction behavior”, which refers to human actions that cause animals to overcome their natural wariness(警惕)of people. 【3】

    Attraction can mean aggression

When animals are routinely attracted to humans and their food, they often become habituated to human presence. “Once an animal reaches that point, it’s essentially game over,” Marion says. That’s the origin of the phrase: A fed bear is a dead bear. 【4】 Even if a person is injured by a bear, the human usually recovers. The animal, however, is often relocated or killed to prevent further potentially deadly encounters.

【5】 You should properly store and deal with food waste. Don’t attempt to burn or bury it, as food waste is more difficult to burn than you think. Besides, if you see other food waste in nature, pick it up, even if it’s not yours. Because while negative individual impacts can have a harmful effect outdoors, positive individual impacts do just the opposite!

A.Food waste can appeal to animals.

B.Human actions result from attraction behavior.

C.Keeping your food to yourself is the best solution.

D.However, food left outdoors can have unexpected impacts.

E.Here are the measures we should take to prevent food waste.

F.This sort of attraction behavior can quickly become dangerous.

G.Because when it comes to human-animal encounters; animals are often the losers.

  • 23、In Thailand, gai yang—or grilled chicken—might not sound like the most extraordinary dish. Yet the necessity for customers to order it days ahead in Sila Sutharat's food stall (小摊) if they want to try some is a proof that ordinary things done creatively are far more attractive than extraordinary things done ordinarily,

One day, I stopped by a place where a man named Sila Sutharat was grilling chickens in perhaps the most extraordinary way possible. Unlike the coal-fire-licked chickens that are so common in Thailand, Sutharat's was cooked with the extraordinary heat source: the sun.

About 60 miles from Thailand's capital city Bangkok, Sutharat's solar grill—a huge, adjustable wall of polished mirrors—could be seen standing out from among the trees on a small side road. Depending on the time, you might see Sutharat standing in the back adjusting the chickens that sat at the center of the focused light—estimated to exceed temperatures of 200℃.

He was inspired, by chance, in 1999, when a tour bus with reflective side mirrors drove past while he was walking to his former food stall. Surprised by the heat given off, he was soon exploring ways to use mirrors to grll chickens.

It might seem a basic principle of physics to me, but Sutharat's creation had not always been a smooth sailing. "My wife thought I was stupid. The neighbors said I was crazy, "Sutharat said of the early days of trial and error. The first grill was built with 300 mirrors, but it didn't cook the food fast enough and struggled with cloud cover. So Sutharat decided to increase the number of mirrors to 1, 000 until a whole gai yang could be cooked in 12 to 15 minutes.

Without any of the usual blackened skin, the flavors of the chickens are far more pronounced. Actually, more and more people have noticed the difference. These days, you'll have to order days ahead if you want to try some.

【1】What has made Sila Sutharat's food stall so special?

    A.The unique kind of heat.

B.The high temperature of the grill.

C.The huge size of the grill

D.The good position of the food stall.

【2】What does the author think of the working principle of Sutharat's grill?

    A.Stupid.

    B.Creative.

    C.Complex.

    D.Simple.

【3】What does the underlined word "pronounced" in the last paragraph mean?

    A.Disgusting.

    B.Different.

    C.Strange.

    D.Bitter.

【4】What is the author's purpose in writing the text?

A.To explain how to grill Thai chickens.

B.To advertise the delicious grilled chickens.

C.To introduce Sila Sutharat's extraordinary gai yang.

D.To help his friend attract more tourists to his restaurant.

  • 24、   You’ve got the butter, the eggs, the organic salad greens and the laundry soap. And so you make your way to the front of the grocery store, which is where you’ll face your moment of truth:

Will you step in behind the mom with a wiggly baby and a full cart? Or take your chances with the young couple you spotted arguing over the best milk in Aisle 3B?

Better make up your mind, quick. Because, faster than the guy with “just one item” who’s about to cut in line, this whole scene is going to disappear.

Amazon recently opened its own convenience store, Amazon Go, in Seattle. It’s the first of its kind: a truly cashless grocery experience in which shoppers enter through gates that look like subway turnstiles (闸机), take what they want from the shelves and exit the way they came. No carts, no lines, no waiting. The store accurately lists what you take and charges your Amazon account, efficiently delivering an electronic receipt after you’ve left. Like most things that Amazon does, this smells like inevitability. We know, as surely as we knew the day that first Amazon box showed up on the doorstep, that the future of shopping has arrived.

Like all progress, it comes at a cost. “Based on data”, says Manoj Thomas, a professor of marketing at Cornell University, “we know that when people use any abstract form of payment, they spend more. And the type of products they choose changes too.”

Decades of psychological research has reinforced the knowledge that the further we are removed from “the pain of paying,” the less we understand how much were really spending. “If you are paying by credit card,” says Thomas, “you might pause at the checkout and suddenly think,” Should I be buying this? “Or if you are paying cash, that reflection happens at the very beginning. Both will be gone with the Amazon store.” Unhealthy impulse purchases and overspending will result from it, he says. “Both are completely related because they are influenced by our impulse urges.”

Win Is Thomas advocating that we all make a run for the atm and attempt to turn back time by using old hard currency? “No, no, no,” he says.

He envisions a world in which you’ll be able to set budget or calorie limits on an app that will recognize when you pick up unhealthy or budget-busting items and will warn you that they fall outside your goals. He expresses confidence that there is some tech hero out there right now, figuring out this exact solution to keep us all on the straight and narrow.

1What does the underlined phrase “this whole scene” in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A.Customers arguing over the best item. B.Customers lining up at the checkout.

C.Customers cutting in line for the bargains. D.Customers doing shopping with their babies.

2What might you experience if you do shopping in Amazon Go?

A.Less “pain of paying” at the checkout counter.

    B.Convenient entering through subway turnstiles.

C.Overspending on more than you actually need.

D.Quicker delivering of goods to your car.

3Manoj Thomas probably holds the view that ________.

A.abstract payment contributes to market prosperity

B.impulse consumption may be regulated with the new app

C.extra spending will surely not happen with the warning of the app

D.it is better for people to use cash or credit cards to avoid overspending

    Twelve Days of Kindness

Although it was less than two weeks before Christmas, I found it difficult to be in a festive mood. We had moved to Canada, and holidays were difficult for us because we missed our friends and relatives in Minnesota. Our family was also going through a very difficult year, with health problems and a serious work-related problem for my husband.

“Mom, How I wish we could spend Christmas with Grandpa and Grandma in Minnesota. I really miss them and my friends there.” said my fifteen-year-old daughter, Rachel.

“I know, Rachel. So would I,” I said. “But Minnesota is 2,000 kilometers away. Don’t you remember how hard it was to drive in that snowstorm last year? And then the temperature dropped to-30℃ on our way back?”

“I remember,” she said and ducked her head disappointedly.

We thought driving to Minnesota for Christmas was too risky and buying airline tickets for three people was out of the question. We would be spending Christmas alone in Canada, and had no money for a Christmas tree or a Christmas dinner.

We were surprised when the doorbell rang. It was dark and cold outside, and we weren’t expecting anyone. Hesitantly, Rachel stood up and went forward to open the door, and then said, “Mom, there’s a big box on the doorstep and nobody is out here!” My husband also went and looked. But there was nobody insight.

They brought the box in. We were surprised to find that the box contained many packages covered in bright Christmas paper. Each had a typewritten note: Open Dec.14, Open Dec.15...There were a total of twelve—the “Twelve Days of Christmas.” The note read: Our LOVE is given anonymously(匿名地), so enjoy fun with your family, but don’t tell anyone please.
