二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Myopia, or nearsightedness, is a common eye condition in which you can see objects near to you clearly, but objects farther away are blurry. To see the farther clearly, you have the option of wearing eyeglasses, or undergoing the more invasive refractive surgery (屈光手术).

But Japan’s Kubota Pharmaceutical Holdings claims to have developed smart glasses that, if worn just an hour per day, can cure myopia. It projects an image onto the wearers’ retina (视网膜) to correct the refractive error that causes nearsightedness. Obviously, wearing the device 60 to 90 minutes a day corrects myopia.

So how does the technology developed by Kubota work exactly? Well, according to a company press release from December of last year, the special glasses rely on micro-LEDS to project virtual images on the visual field to make the retina active. Apparently, it can do that without affecting the wearer’s daily activities.

Founded by Dr. Ryo Kubota, Kubota Pharmaceutical Holdings is still testing the device, known as Kubota Glasses, and trying to determine how long the effect lasts after the user wears the device. And how much the ugly-looking glasses have to be worn for the correction to be permanent.

Kubota Pharmaceutical Holdings began testing the glasses in the summer of last year, and is currently conducting tests on about 25 people in the U.S to assess the effectiveness of its smart glasses. The company plans to begin selling the device in Asia in the second half of 2021, where there are more nearsighted people, but it has plans to enter other markets in the future.

  • 23、In her new book, “The Smartest Kids in the World,” Amanda Ripley, an investigative journalist, tells the story of Tom, a high-school student from Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, who decides to spend his senior year in Warsaw, Poland. Poland is a surprising educational success story: in the past decade, the country raised students’ test scores from significantly below average to well above it. Polish kids have now outscored(超过……分数) American kids in math and science, even though Poland spends, on average, less than half as much per student as the United States does. One of the most striking differences between the high school Tom attended in Gettysburg and the one he ends up at in Warsaw is that the latter has no football team, or, for that matter, teams of any kind.

That American high schools waste more time and money on sports than on math is an old complaint. This is not a matter of how any given student who plays sports does in school, but of the culture and its priorities. This December, when the latest Program for International Student Assessment(PISA) results are announced, it’s safe to predict that American high-school students will once again display their limited skills in math and reading, outscored not just by students in Poland but also by students in places like South Korea, Belgium, the Netherlands, Finland, Singapore, and Japan. Meanwhile, they will have played some very exciting football games, which will have been breathlessly written up in their hometown papers.

Why does this situation continue? Well, for one thing, kids like it. And for another, according to Ripley, parents seem to like the arrangement, too. She describes a tour she took of a school in Washington D.C., which costs thirty thousand dollars a year. The tour leader—a mother with three children in the school—was asked about the school’s flaws(暇疵). When she said that the math program was weak, none of the parents taking the tour reacted. When she said that the football program was weak, the parents suddenly became concerned. “Really?” one of them asked worriedly, “What do you mean?”

One of the ironies(讽刺) of the situation is that sports reveal what is possible. American kids’ performance on the field shows just how well they can do when expectations are high. It’s too bad that their test scores show the same thing.

【1】According to Paragraph 2, we know that _______.

    A. too much importance is placed on sports in America

    B. little time is spent on sports in Japanese schools

    C. American high schools complain about sports time

    D. PISA plays a very important role in America

【2】The underlined sentence in the last paragraph means _______.

    A. American students’ academic performance worries their parents a lot

    B. high expectations push up American students’ academic performance

    C. low expectations result in American students’ poor PISA performance

    D. lacking practice contributes to American students’ average performance

【3】The purpose of this article is to _______.

    A. draw public attention to a weakness in American school tradition

    B. call on American schools to learn from the Polish model

    C. compare Polish schools with those in America

    D. explain what is wrong with American schools and provide solutions

  • 24、Scientists found a single dose of the protein Hila worked on lab rats. They said it showed “great promise as a future stroke treatment” but had not yet been tested in human trials.

The researchers travelled to Fraser Island in Australia to hunt for and capture three potentially deadly Australian funnel web spiders. They then took the spiders back to their laboratory “for milking”.

This involved coaxing the spider into releasing its venom, which can then be sucked up using pipettes(吸管). The scientists make a careful study of a protein in the venom and recreated a version of it in their lab.

They then injected this Hila into the lab rats. They found that the protein blocked acid-sensing ion channels in the brain-something the researchers say are key drivers of brain damage after stroke.

Professor Glenn King, who led the research, said, “We believe that we have, for the first time, found a way to minimize the effects of brain damage after a stroke. Hila even provides some protection to the core brain region most affected by oxygen deprivation, which is generally considered unrecoverable due to the rapid cell death caused by stroke.”

Dr. Kate Holmes, deputy director for Research at the Stroke Association, said, “We welcome any treatment that has the potential to reduce the damage caused by stroke, particularly if this can benefit people who are unable to arrive at hospital quickly.”

A stroke is a brain attack that happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off or there is bleeding on the brain. Every two seconds, someone in the world will have a stoke. Stroke is the second most common cause of death, causing about6.7million deaths each year, one every five seconds. Almost one in every eight deaths is caused by stroke.
