  • 21、A second-grade education has not stopped garbage collector Jose Gutierrez. He is bringing the gift of reading to thousands of Colombian children.

Gutierrez started saving books from the trash 27 years ago. He was driving a garbage truck at night through the country’s richer neighborhoods. The books that were thrown away slowly piled up. Now the ground floor of his small house is a community library. It is stacked (堆放) from floor to ceiling. They range from chemistry textbooks to children’s classics.

Books are luxuries for boys and girls in low-income neighborhoods. New reading material at bookstores is too expensive. There are 19 public libraries in Bogota, a city of 8.5 million people. But the libraries tend to be located far away from poorer areas.“They should be in all neighborhoods and on each comer of every neighborhood,” the 60-year-old says.“Books can save us. That is what Colombia needs.”

Gutierrez has a love of reading, which comes from his mother. She always read to him even though she was too poor to keep him in school. Gutierrez is a keen reader of works by authors such as Leo Tolstoy and Victor Hugo. His favorite books include One Hundred Years of Solitude and The Gencral in His Labyrinth by Colombia’s Nobel Prize-winning novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez. The first book Gutierrez found was a copy of the classic novel Anna Karenina. The Tolstoy book was later joined by The Little Prince, Sophie’s World, The Iliad and a number of novels. Today, he has collected around 25,000 books.

Now, Gutierrez still looks through the rubbish for additions to his library, named “The Strength of Words.”His fame as Colombia’s “Lord of the Books” has helped a lot. It has brought him thou-sands of donated books. He has sent many to other libraries around the country. Moreover, Gutierrez has traveled to book fairs in Mexico and Chile to share his experience of starting a library with the books that are thrown away.

Gutierrez says he doesn’t reject technology that allows books to be read digitally. But he prefers to read the printed words on paper.“There is nothing more beautiful than having a book in your pocket, in your bag or inside your car.”

【1】How old was Gutierrez when he started saving books from the trash?

    A.In his twenties.

    B.In his thirties.

【2】What does the underlined word “They” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

    A.Luxury books.

    D.Poor areas.

【3】What did the book Anna Karenina mean to Gutierrez?

A.The beginning of his charity project.

    B.A window to the world.

C.One of his greatest achievements in life.

    D.Some comfort in difficult times.

【4】Which of the following sayings does Gutierrez’s story lead us to believe?

    A.Actions speak louder than words.

B.A good book can shine a light upon the soul.

    C.One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.

Teachers say the digital age has had a good influence — and a not-so-good influence — on this generation of American teenagers.More than 2,000 teachers took an online survey.Three-quarters of the teachers said the Internet and digital search tools have had a “mostly positive” effect on their students’ research habits and skills. But 64 percent said the technologies “do more to distract (使……分心) students than to help them academically.” And 87 percent agreed that these technologies are creating an “easily distracted generation with short attention spans.”

The Pew Internet Project did the survey with the National Writing Project.Judy Buchanan is the vice director of the National Writing Project and a co-author of the report.Ms.Buchanan says digital research tools are helping students learn more and faster.“Teachers really favor these tools because they are ways to make some of the learning exciting and engaging.Young people favor these tools. The goal is to really help them become creators of meaningful content, and not just sort of consumers.”

But one problem the survey found is that many students lack digital literacy. They trust too much of the information they find on the Internet.Judy says these students haven’t developed the skills to determine the quality of online information.“It’s something that really has to be taught and paid attention to.Because in a world in which things happen quickly, you do need to step back, reflect and analyze the information you have.”

Another problem is blamed on something that might not seem like a problem at all: being able to quickly find information online.Teachers say the result is a reduction in the desire and ability of their students to work hard to find answers. They say students are overly dependent on search engines and do not make enough use of printed books or research libraries.

Many teachers are also concerned that the Internet makes it easy for students to copy work done by others instead of using their own abilities.

【1】The text mainly tells us _________.

A.all the students use digital tools

B.the Internet is playing a key role

    C.teachers encourage using digital tools

D.digital tools bring about benefits and problems

2Which of the following best shows the structure of the text?

    A.

    B.

    C.

    D.

3The underlined sentence in the third paragraph probably means _________.

A.students do not have the right digital tools

B.students do not always have access to the Internet

C.students haven’t the ability to adjust themselves

D.students can’t judge online information properly

4Some students don’t tend to work hard because _________.

A.they can get answers on the Internet quickly

B.printed books and libraries around aren’t enough

C.the Internet can’t make students concentrate

D.they can copy each others’ work without being punished

  • 23、Plants take carbon dioxide(CO2)out of the atmosphere to do photosynthesis(光合作用), and thus help reduce the greenhouse gases warming the planet. At least, that’s how the story went before researchers from the Carnegie Institution for Scienee(CIS)realized that today’s carbon dioxide levels cause the plants to behave in a way that actually contributes to global warming.

The CIS scientists unveiled new research that shows increased carbon dioxide levels cause plants to keep water that otherwise would have evaporated (蒸发)from their leaves, entered the atmosphere and helped cool the planet. At local levels, this effect can increase the temperature so that it is 25 percent higher than what the greenhouse effect would have done on its own. This increased warming results from plant leaves’ natural reaction to high CO2 environments. Plant leaves have tiny vents that open or close to let the plant breathe. In the presence of a high carbon dioxide concentration, these vents don’t need to open as wide to breathe in the same amount of CO2, and so they close up to prevent additional water from escaping.

Most climate models don’t take into account the cooling effect of this water, so the CIS researchers generated new climate models based on their understanding of this phenomenon. The new model showed that, averaged over the entire globe, the decreased water loss from plants accounts for 16 percent of warming of the land surface, with greenhouse effects accounting for the rest. But in some regions, such as parts of North America and eastern Asia, the effect can account for more than 25 percent of the total warming.

Unfortunately, these results don’t just confirm that the contribution of CO2 to global warming is worse than scientists previously thought, but also greatly add complexity to any attempts to reverse (反转)the warming process.

【1】What will happen in high CO2 environments?

    A.Plants close up their vents.

    B.Plants stop breathing in CO2.

C.Plants are not likely to react.

    D.Plants suffer much water loss.

【2】What is known about the research?

A.It was carried out in certain regions.

B.It took many climate models into consideration.

C.It confirms CO2 doesn’t contribute to global warming.

D.It shows global warming is more complex than expected.

【3】Which of the following is the best title for the text?

    A.Plants Can Warm the Planet

B.Plants Are Greener on the Earth

    C.Global Warming Becomes Complex

D.New Climate Models Are on the Way

  • 24、   The Ig Nobel Prize, a spoof (滑稽模仿)of the actual Nobel Prize, exists to award the 10 strangest research projects of the year that bring you fun and make you think. The following are three of them in 2019.

    Medicine Prize: Pizza

It’s one of the world’s most popular foods. According to the Ig Nobel Medicine Prize winner, eating more pizzas can lower the risk of cancer and heart disease — if your pizza is loaded with fruits and veggies. These provide flavonoids (类黄酮)to fight against certain diseases. So, if you’re a pizza enthusiast, you now have one more reason to love it!

    Economics Prize: Dirty Money

Paper money, the most frequently passed items on the planet, is known to pick up all kinds of bacteria. Which country’s currency is the dirtiest? An international team compared seven countries’ paper money. The Romanian Leu was the only one to carry all three types of bacteria tested. And the US Dollar was also a finalist. Perhaps this will make cashless payments more popular.

    Biology Prize: Cockroach

Cockroaches (蟑螂) are well known for their survival abilities, but few folks know they can sense magnetic fields. More surprisingly, an international team found that dead cockroaches have more magnetic properties (磁'性)than live ones. That’s because magnetic properties decrease when the temperature gets higher. So if you can stand cockroaches, they may be good magnetic sensors (传感器).

【1】What do the three prizes have in common?

A.They are beneficial to our health.

    B.They are entertaining and unusual.

C.They’ve gained the recognition of the Nobel Prize.

D.They are stranger than any other project in previous years.

【2】What can we learn from the passage?

A.People with heart disease should eat more pizzas.

B.US Dollar is relatively dirtier than Romanian Leu.

C.Dirty paper money leads to cashless payments

D.Dead cockroaches are better magnetic sensors than live ones.

【3】In which column can you find this passage in a newspaper?

    A.Discovery.

    B.Sports.

    C.Health.

    D.Business.
