二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、Whether it be a person, an animal, or even an insect, a mother’s instincts(本能)are never wrong. This idea rings true for a mother cat who acted fast and sought out help when her kittens were in trouble. This mother cat’s quick thinking may have just saved her babies.

In the urban district of Izmir in western Turkey, a cat walked into a regular hospital holding a kitten in her mouth. As the mother cat moved through the hospital, people were surprised to see such a sight, but let her pass. The mother cat asked for help, crying for a long time. She was familiar to the hospital staff, who had been leaving her food and water outside, but they were unaware that she had given birth to kittens.

The mother cat was concerned for her young because they weren’t able to open their eyes. After the doctors looked at the kittens, they noticed that they were suffering from eye infections. One of the doctors recalls, “We consulted with vets and gave medicine as described. When the kittens opened their eyes a short time later, we were excited." Later, they were sent to an animal hospital for further care. The cats are now up for adoption and will hopefully find loving forever homes.

When it comes to mother cats and kittens, kittens completely depend on mothers for the first few months of their lives. Because they are blind and almost deaf until about two or three weeks old, the mother cat must protect them from any threat or danger. Without the mother cat’s help, the kittens may not make it to adulthood.

As shown by the mother cat in Turkey, a mother’s love and protection knows no bounds. Whether the mom is a human or a cat, mothers will always look out for their babies and make sure they are safe and healthy.

【1】Why did the mother cat show up in the hospital?

    A.To seek out food.

    B.To express thanks.

    C.To get her babies treated.

D.To give birth to her babies.

【2】What makes newly-born cats dependent on their mothers?

    A.Their physical state.

    B.Their eating habit.

    C.Their appearance.

    D.Their behavior.

【3】What can we learn from the story?

    A.A cat has nine lives.

    B.Love makes a difference.

    C.One good turn deserves another.

D.God helps those who help themselves.

  • 22、   We often hear such statements: “I spilled (洒出) juice, but it wasn't my fault.” “I got in trouble at school, but it wasn't my fault.” or “I was in a car accident, but it wasn't my fault.” That “It's not my fault.” is a go-to response for so many people and especially teenagers.

Parents complain they are tired of the “excuse”. The reason why variations of “It's not my fault.” are so popular is that it lets us off the hook from guilt and blame. I'm a fan of not owning responsibility for things that I can't control. Teens who often say “It's my fault.” when something bad happens tend to be highly self-critical, perfectionistic and more easier to be troubled by anxiety and depression.

While it is important to recognize lack of reason to blame oneself, many teens over rely on “It's not my fault.” When trying to get them to take responsibility, parents usually attempt to convince their teens that something is their fault. The approach tends to be ineffective and turn into a power struggle. No one wins. A more effective approach can be to stress significant drawbacks to consistently focusing on removing our responsibility with this phrase.

Overuse of the phrase can result in feelings of lack of ability to control their own lives. This sense has been shown to cause low motivation. Besides creating feelings of lack of ability, overuse of “It's not my fault.” focuses a teen's attention on what is done as opposed to what needs to be done.

People may not have caused all their problems but they have to solve them anyway. The example I frequently share with teens is the question of what one will do if he is pushed into a deep lake. One can certainly stay in water, yelling, “It's not my fault.” However, that won't get him out of water. He needs to swim to the shore, regardless of the fault.

If you take a proper approach to communicating with your teens, you can help them avoid over reliance on “It's not my fault.”

【1】What phenomenon is described in Paragraph 1?

A.The teenagers' dislike for school life.

B.The common trouble faced by teenagers.

C.The reasons for blaming others for accidents.

D.The tendency for people not to be responsible for mess in life.

【2】What type of teens tends to suffer great mental pressure according to the text?

    A.Those lacking confidence and ambition.

B.Those allowing others to find excuses.

C.Those unable to get along well with others.

D.Those often blaming themselves for some incidents.

【3】What's the author's attitude to parents' usual way of guiding children?

    A.Negative.

    B.Supportive

    C.Ambiguous.

    D.Neutral.

【4】What’s the suitable title for this passage?

    A.Avoiding troubling others

B.Daring to point out others’ mistake

C.Focusing on how to solve problems

D.Should be self-critical as much as possible.

  • 23、   Taking paternity leave (陪产假) shortly after the birth of a new son or daughter may be the key to developing strong father-child bonds that last for years, says new research from Ball State University.

“We find that 9-year-olds report greater satisfaction with father involvement,” said Richard Petts, a Ball State sociology professor who carried out the research with Chris Knoester at the Ohio State University and Jane Waldfogel at Columbia University. “They feel closer to their fathers and report better communication with their dads if their fathers take paternity leave, and especially if their fathers take two or more weeks of leave.”

“We found evidence that part of the reason why two or more weeks of paternity leave may lead to 9-year-olds expressing greater satisfaction seems to be that longer periods of paternity leave-taking link to parental relationship satisfaction,” said Petts.

The study is the latest in a series examining the effects of parental leave in the development of children and its influence on the family. It is also the first research known to assess the associations between paternity leave and children’s opinions of father-child relationship quality in the United States, Petts said.

Petts said the findings of the study will help families and policymakers (政策制定者) who aim to strengthen families and improve higher quality father-child relationships.

The present structure (结构) of paternity leave in the United States provides limited opportunities for fathers to take leave and, in fact, often discourages fathers from taking leave, he said.

“The possibility to take leave is often limited to higher-income families,” Petts said. “A lack of a national paid family leave policy limits access to important benefits for American families. The present structure may be increasing inequalities.” Petts said that providing equal access to paternity leave may help to change these patterns and strengthen family relationships.

1How was the research probably carried out?

A.By tracking families. B.By talking with mothers.

C.By interviewing the kids. D.By recording children’s behavior.

2What is found about paternity leave?

A.It makes young kids become dependent.

B.It is determined by parental relationships.

C.It encourages men to become better fathers.

    D.It improves father-child relationship quality.

3What do we know about the research?

A.It is welcomed by young fathers. B.It is the first to study parental leave.

C.It is probably helpful to policymakers. D.It is more important than similar studies.

4What is the problem with the present structure of paternity leave in the US?

A.Paid paternity leave is only two weeks long.

B.There is no policy to encourage paternity leave.

C.Low-income families think little of paternity leave.

D.High-income fathers are too busy to take paternity leave.

  • 24、It's a classroom; but instead of being told to sit quietly and listen, you are encouraged to stand up, jump around, imagine and act out it's a class full of laughter and applause(掌声), emotion and energy. Welcome to drama class, one of my favorite classes at high school.

In drama class we used to play a lot of“ drama games. We would improvise(即兴表演), mime(模仿) and above all use our imaginations.

My favorite game was called "Spotto". One person stood at the front of the class and performed a scene, completely out of their imagination. When one audience member yelled "Spotto!", the performer had to freeze. Then the person who had yelled Spotto had to get up and improvise a new scenario (剧情)based on the position the first performer froze in. This went on as more and more people were added to the scene.

Eventually the entire class would have joined the scene. Then the performers would start to leave in reverse(颠倒的)order. The first performer had to have a good memory to remember all the other scenes.

It was a lot of fun, and a good test of everyone's imagination to see what they would come up with.

Drama class at my school often involved a big performance at the end of the semester as well. We would work on a production throughout the semester and put on a show for our parents and the school community.

It was a great experience to perform on stage in front of a large audience. Drama class can help shy children to come out of their shells. It helped me become more confident and developed my public speaking skills. Drama class is also a great place to express yourself, and a way for children to use up some of their energy.

1Which of the following statements is TRUE about the game "Spotto" as described in the article?

    A. "Spotto" is designed to help drama students lean from one another’s performance.

    B. A performer has to think of a story completely unrelated to that of the performer before him or her.

    C. Each performer in a "Spotto" game has to retell the story of the performer directly after him or her.

    D. Every student gets the chance to make a contribution to the "Spotto" game.

2The underlined word "freeze" in Paragraph 3 probably means_______.

    A. stop

    B. quit

    C. change

    D. wait

3We can infer from the article that the author______.

    A. Doesn't like to sit quietly in class

    B. never performed well in the drama games

    C. used to be quite a shy student

    D. used to shine in performances

4What is the article mainly about?

    A. Unforgettable experiences on stage.

    B. One of the author's favorite high school courses.

    C. How to improve your drama skills.

    D. A few drama games for fun.
