21、 In many cultures, it is considered unlucky to spill salt. Fortunately, many cultures also have a solution to the problem, which usually involves throwing a pinch of salt over your shoulder. It may seem confusing to modern humans, but knowing that salt was once incredibly valuable can change this perspective.
For thousands of years, salt was an extremely rare commodity. It was difficult to obtain so that the price was very high. Many trading routes were set up to carry salt, people were paid in salt, and salt was sometimes worth more than its weight in gold. Therefore, spilling salt was considered wasteful.
Because of its high value, salt was also associated with friendship and good fortune. Offerings of salt were included in many religious ceremonies, and people might bring salt to a new home for good luck. These associations would have suggested that it would be bad luck to spill salt, since it would seem to violate salt’s fortunate properties.
Salt is also an excellent preservative. It prevents food from going bad. As such, it came to be linked with health and longevity. In some cultures, spilling salt was thought to reduce one's well-being. In Britain, for example, each spilled grain was said to represent a tear, while in Germany spilled salt awakened the devil, bringing misfortune.
The fear of spilling salt was also adopted into the Christian faith. It is said that Judas spilled salt at the Last Supper, and since he later turned out to be the betrayer of Christ, spilled salt is considered unlucky by many Christians.
Should you be unfortunate enough to spill salt, you might throw a pinch over your left shoulder to blind the Devil.

22、 With an improved economy, many travelers have been buying first or business class seats, leaving fewer for upgrades(升级).Here are some strategies for getting a free upgrade.
1. Fly a lot.
This is the most common way to earn a free upgrade. Most airlines reserve some spaces for travelers who fly at least 5,000 miles per year. Five years ago, this meant half or more of domestic(国内的)first class travelers sat up front for free. But now, airlines are selling more high-price seats,so on popular routes it is not unusual for more than 20 travelers to compete for one or two upgrades. But on routes with fewer business class travelers, free upgrades remain more plentiful.
2. Use miles.
If you're not a frequent traveler but still have some miles to fly,you may be able to use them for an upgrade. Be careful, though,as many airlines now ask not just for miles but also a cash co-pay. One example: on flights to Europe,American Airlines charges 5,000 miles, plus $110,for a one-way upgrade from discounted economy class to business class. For most domestic upgrades,American Airlines wants 15,000 miles plus $ 75.
3. Get lucky.
Sometimes airlines overbook coach(经济舱),and a few travelers get no seats. Agents try to ensure the airline's most loyal travelers get the nod(被选中). Agents usually have some flexibility to make sure the plane is full and takes off on time. So it's the easiest way for them to do it-they might upgrade someone else out of order.
4. Save a life.
Flight attendants don't usually upgrade passengers, even when empty seats remain. Doctors and nurses who answer an emergency call are sometimes an exception. If they comfort a passenger, flight attendants might allow them to sit in business or first class for the rest of the flight.
【1】What might be the main topic of the passage?
A. The ways to get upgraded on a plane.
B. How to get on the flight safely and on time.
C. The best ways to get free flight tickets.
D. How to save a life on a plane quickly.
【2】Who can have the chance to get a free upgrade?
A. The person who always obeys the rules on the flight.
B. The person who doesn't have to look after a patient.
C. The person who is a friend of the flight attendants.
D. The person who flies a lot and has a long flying distance.
【3】Why might medical personnel be allowed to sit in business or first class sometimes?
A. Because they would like to talk with flight attendants kindly.
B. Because they want to have a better rest after a long journey.
C. Because they need to treat a passenger who is in emergent condition.
D. Because they are tired of staying with common passengers.
【4】Where can we find the passage?
A. A life guide. B. A travel guide.
C. A shopping guide. D. A pilot guide.
23、 When night falls in the Netherlands, lights dance across a farm and create a dreamy landscape. Here, in a field inspired by beauty and infused with photobiology(光生物学), art intersects with agriculture. Yet, there is more than what meets the eye; these lights also provide higher productivity and a more sustainable crop.
This magical field is part of a project called GROW and was created by Dutch designer Daan Roosegaarde, who lived in the city and had a desire to connect people to the source of their food in an inspiring way. “How can we make the farmer the hero? We barely know where our food comes from,” Roosegaarde said.
His vision was to combine science and art, and in so doing, create a better world. Longing to offer the world light in dark times, he set to work in a 5-acre field of leeks(韭葱). He tapped into his own design concept alongside artists, a team of designers and experts at the Wageningen University.
Using the science of photobiology, the group discovered that certain mixes of red, blue and ultraviolet lights promote plant growth。The team then positioned LEDs in different places across the field. These lights move up and down in order to ensure the light is evenly distributed across the area。And when these lights move at night, they seem to dance, creating a poetic dreamscape. “It's very futuristic and also very romantic, in a way,” Roosegaarde said.
Aside from being beautiful and promoting growth, the team observed that due to these lights, they needed to use 50 percent fewer pesticides(杀虫剂) on the crop. This is because this specific recipe of lights activated the defense system of the plants. And as it works on all crops, not just leeks, Roosegaarde foresees a way to reduce the use of pesticides on many other plants.
Roosegaarde's project will soon be touring 40 countries, sending its dancing lights across the world.

B.He came up with the design concept.

【3】Why are fewer pesticides needed on the crop with the lights alongside?

24、Every Wednesday, I go to Cantata Adult Life Services, a local retirement community in Brookfield, Illinois, US, with my classmates to do community service.
After my very first visit to Cantata, my life changed forever. That may sound a bit dramatic, but volunteering with the elderly has changed my views on life.
Our visits last about an hour, and we bring 25-30 students every time. We play board games and cards with the residents while we’re there.
You can watch all the movies and TV shows you want about “life back then”, but nothing compares to talking to the people who were actually there. Just hearing their stories has touched me in a way I never thought possible.
Whether it was talking to 98-year-old “Hurricane Hilda” about her glory days as a roller skater or chatting with Lou about the times she danced with a famous actor, I was completely attracted by every single memory the residents wanted to share with me.
Even the residents who don’t have amazing memories make the experience satisfying . I remember visiting Mrs Robinson. She couldn’t recall much about her past, but she told me she’d never forget how kind I was just to listen to her “rambling (漫谈)”. It made me realize that it’s the little things that make life worth living. That’s something I won’t forget anytime soon.
If there’s one thing I’ve realized in my three years of visiting Cantata, it’s that presence – just being there – means more than anything to many of the residents. And despite how busy our lives are, there’s always time to make someone’s day.
For me, it feels great to be a source of happiness, a smile on a bad day or a listening ear for old memories. And at the end of the day, that’s all that matters.
It’s easy to feel like you don’t have anything in common with the elderly – especially when you’re a teenager. But that’s not true at all.
I hate to be overly clichéd (陈词滥调的) here, but age really is just a number. As young adults, it’s important for us to realize this sooner rather than later. We can learn a lot from the elderly, and they can often benefit from teenagers too.
【1】What do the volunteers do according to the passage?
A. They share everything with the residents.
B. They play board games and cards with the residents.
C. They watch the residents play games.

【2】According to the writer, what is the most important thing that volunteers can do for the elderly?
A. Playing with them. B. Benefiting from them.
C. Helping them. D. Being there with them.
【3】 What does the writer want to tell us by writing this passage ?
A. We don’t have anything in common with the elderly.
B. Age is just a number.
C. It is important to help the elderly.
D. Young adults and the elderly can benefit from each other.
