二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 21、A four-year-old boy discovers that compassion (同情) for the 1ess fortunate can produce amazing results. Our hero’ s origin story started this past February. Austin and his father, TJ Perine, went to the Firehouse Ministries, a local shelter that provides housing, food, and other services for homeless men. As they drove by the redbrick building, they saw a group of 25 homeless men standing on the street corner. “Dad, they look sad,” Austin said. “Can we take them some food and make them smile?”

That day, Austin used his allowance to buy each man a Burger King sandwich and handed the food out himself. Seeing what their presence meant to the men at the ministry, Austin and TJ returned the next week. Austin again dipped into his piggy bank to buy sandwiches, which he banded out along with his new catchphrase, “Don’t forget to show love?”

After he returned every week for five weeks, word of Austin’s acts of kindness spread through social media and national news outlets. Burger King jumped aboard, agreeing to donate $1,000 a month for an entire year toward the cause. Soon, churches and shelters across the country began inviting Austin to come distribute food in other poverty-prone areas. Whereas before Austin and TJ could feed 25 to 50 people at a time, now, thanks to corporate and community support, they can feed 800 to 2,000 people at once.

Austin’s passion has now become his family’s calling. His mother Audrey established the Show Love Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to fighting homelessness. She now serves as president, and TJ left his job to oversee public relations for the foundation full time. He’s in talks with the city of Birmingham to secure the redbrick building where it all started—Firehouse Ministries is moving- -as the site of their own shelter, which will offer medical and mental care as preventive steps against homelessness.

As for Austin, he continues to give out food, smiles, and his inspirational message of love. “It makes me feel like I’m saving the day.”

【1】What did Austin do with his pocket money?

    A.Travel across the country.

B.Build a shelter for the poor.

C.Improve the life of his family.

【2】Why did the author mention Burger King in paragraph 3?

A.To make an advertisement for it.

B.To show the effect of Austin’s act.

C.To praise its kindness and support.

D.To seek its help for the less fortunate.

【3】What can we learn about the Show Love Foundation?

    A.It is highly profitable.

B.It was set up by Austin.

    C.It will provide health care.

    D.It’s funded by the government.

【4】Which word can best describe Austin and his parents?

    A.Warm-hearted.

    B.Peace-loving.

    C.Hard-working.

    D.Quick-minded.

  • 22、   For more than 2,000 years the Chinese people have been guided by the ideals of Confucianism. Its founder and greatest teacher was Confucius, whose humane philosophy also influenced the civilization of all of eastern Asia. Many legends were spread to illustrate Confucius’ beliefs. According to one story, he and his followers passed a cemetery where a woman was weeping at a graveside. She told them she was crying because “my husband’s father was killed here by a tiger, and my husband also, and now my son has met the same fate”. When they asked her why she did not leave such a fatal spot, she answered that in this place there was no oppressive government. “Remember this, my children,” said Confucius, “oppressive government is fiercer and more feared than a tiger”.

In such teaching and with such wise sayings, Confucius tried to bring people a respect for the teachings of the wise men of older generations. He always said of himself that he was a “transmitter, not a maker”. He collected and edited the poetry, the music, and the historical writings of what he considered the golden age.

Confucius laid no claim to being more than a man. Yet when he died he was admired almost as god. Temples were constructed in his honor in every city of China. His grave at Kufow, in what is now Shandong Province, became a place of pilgrimage.

Though Confucianism is commonly called a religion, it is rather a system of moral conduct. Confucius did not talk of God but of goodness. He did not teach about any god, simply saying, “Respect the gods, but have as little to do with them as possible.” His attention was centered on making people better in their lifetime, and his Analects are wise sayings similar to the Proverbs in the Bible.

Confucius is the Latinized form of the philosopher’s Chinese name, which was K’ung-fu-tzu, meaning Master K’ung. He was born in a poor but noble family. His father died when the boy was 3 years old. When he was only 6, people noted his fondness for setting out sacrifices and for ceremony. After his marriage at age 19, he worked for the governor of his district, first a keeper of stores and then as an overseer of parks and livestock. At the age of 22 he began his life as a teacher by establishing a school. He accepted valuable aid from some of his students, but he also welcomed students who could afford to pay only a small fee.

After some years of teaching and travel, he settled in Shandong for 15 years. When he was 52 years old, he was rewarded with an appointment as governor of a province and never failed to win the credit he deserved. He performed his task so well that a neighboring governor became jealous. Later, Confucius traveled around other kingdoms and wandered about for 13 years. Eventually, he returned to his native state of Lu in his 69th year and died three years later.

1The story of the woman in Para.1 is mentioned to show____.

B.was not interested in reforming the society

C.did not want people to worship him as god

D.showed great disrespect for the noble families

3What does the underlined sentence in Para.4 mean?

A.Confucianism is different from common religion.

B.God blesses those who show respect and goodness.

C.People are advised to keep a distance from gods.

D.Confucius highlights the importance of virtue.

4In the eyes of the author, Confucius’ political life____.

    A.was highly successful

B.turned out to be a surprise

C.was bound to fail because of his belief

D.was not so important as his teaching life

5As regards Confucius and his teachings, the tone of the passage is marked with____.

    A.objective spirit B.deep admiration

    C.great openness D.obvious surprise

  • 23、   The flight of butterflies has so far been somewhat of a secret to researchers, given their unusually large and broad wings relative to their body size. Now researchers at Lund University in Sweden have studied the aerodynamics (空气动力) of butterflies in the wind tunnel (风洞). The results suggest that butterflies use a highly helpful clap technique, therefore making use of their unique wings. This helps them rapidly take off when escaping natural enemies.

The researchers studied the wingbeats of freely flying butterflies during takeoff in the wind tunnel. During the upward process, the wings cup, creating an air-filled pocket between them. When the wings strike each other, the air is forced out, resulting in a backward strong stream of air that pushes the butterflies forward. The downward wingbeat has another function: the butterflies stay in the air and do not fall to the ground.

The wings’ striking was described by researchers almost 50 years ago, but it is only in this study that the theory has been tested on real butterflies in free flight. Until now, it has been generally believed that butterfly wings are aerodynamically inefficient. However, the researchers suggest that the opposite is actually true.

“That the wings are cupped when butterflies clap them together, makes the wing clap much more effective. It is an elegant mechanism that is far more advanced than we imagined, and it is fascinating,” says biology researcher Per Henningsson, who studied the butterflies’ aerodynamics. “The results of the study could help inspire improved performance and flight technology in small unmanned aircraft,” he continues.

In addition to studying the butterflies, the researchers designed mechanical wings that are modeled on real ones. The shape and flexibility of the mechanical wings as they are cupped and folded confirm the efficiency. Their measurements show that the pushing force created by the flexible wings is 22 percent higher and the efficiency 28 percent better compared to if the wings had been rigid.

【1】What does the researchers’ study focus on?

    A.The butterfly’s body size.

    B.The butterfly’s escape technique.

    C.The butterfly’s flying principle.

    D.The butterfly’s frequency of wingbeats.

【2】For what purpose do butterfly wings strike?

A.To circle steadily in the air.

    B.To form an air pocket.

    C.To release their additional energy.

D.To empty the air pocket for forward force.

【3】Why were the mechanical wings made?

    A.They might draw public attention.

B.They could be used to test the findings.

C.They’d show results in line with popular belief.

D.They helped avoid experimenting on live butterflies.

【4】Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.Butterfly Adapts Itself to the Wild Survival

B.Butterfly Wing Clap Explains Secret of Flight

C.Flexible Wings Boost Aircraft Making Industry

D.New Discoveries Are Made Based on Aerodynamics

  • 24、Bringing in and engaging diverse people in your organization requires awareness and preparation. When employees don't feel included, they're less engaged and productive. 【1】 That's why some leaders are concluding that what they've been doing isn't working. This is a result of bringing people in but not supporting them as full participants in the organization. This is where inclusion comes in.

【2】 When a workplace is truly inclusive, everyone feels like they are valued and their needs are being considered. There's a place, for example, to be a working mother without feeling like you have to apologize or explain that you need to balance work and parenting.

Companies that are good for working moms are also good for humans. 【3】 They want to be part of companies that readily acknowledge people have priorities outside of work and recognize this does not mean they're any less productive or less committed.

Although companies have talked for decades about trying to develop a sense of inclusion for working moms, very little has changed. 【4】 They have to handle questions about limitations such as a lack of time, commitment, and focus.

Working moms are valuable employees who we should actively guide and promote. They bring a lot to the table. In fact, a productivity study of highly skilled workers in 2014 found that parents were more productive than those who were not parents. 【5】

Professional cultures that make employees feel included are places where employees can do their best work, individually and on teams. These cultures experience higher engagement because people are well-positioned to stay for the long term.

A.Inclusion means being aware that each person is unique.

B.Building a culture of inclusion is about thinking long term.

C.Mothers often still have to defend themselves in the workplace.

D.Being a working parent makes it harder to advance in their future.

E.They're not happy and will eventually leave for a better environment.

F.Working moms seek out companies with better support and understanding.

G.Mothers of two or more children were considered the most productive in the study.
