  • 26、   Do you like chocolate? Maybe most people do. A box of it can be a great gift. Buy one for a friend and give it as a surprise. See how happy that person gets.

Say you just got a box of chocolate. Which piece do you pick first? A man has studied people’s choices. He says they tell something about the person. Did you choose a round piece? You are a person who likes to party. Did you choose an oval (椭圆形的)shape? You are a person who likes to make things. Picking a square shape shows something else. The person is honest and truthful. They feel like they are so important, and they feel like everything they have done for their daughters or sons is very worth it. 1. Obeying and respecting parents is also a way to show you value them so much.

When your parents see you every day, they feel more alive. So give them time. It's not that hard.3Well, I know all parents have their own special occasions. You must remember them and celebrate them. Nothing can make your parents happier than celebrating their special occasions with their loved ones, especially their birthdays.

Keep eating together at mealtimes—Even though you are busy or you don't live with your parents, at least find some time to eat together with your parents. • 28、   For a scholar focusing on Australia's public diplomacy (外交活动), working as a recreational manager in China may never be part of his career path. But Bradley does have lots to say now about his special experience at a resort in the picturesque tropical coastal city of Sanya in South China's Hainan province.

The 33-year-old Australian is actually a student in international relations completing his PhD through Griffith University. He came to Beijing for a cooperative research at Peking University less than two years ago. Such an academic life was just added color with a chance offered by the cultural exchanges project, "I'm in China".

"What I liked most about the experience was it was something completely different that you would never be able to do as a regular tourist," Bradley said in an interview. Bradley was chosen to work as a recreational manager for a Chinese wedding.

The film crew took them to many "amazing sites" and the staff at the resort taught them a lot about how to "incorporate modern Chinese features while still keeping traditional customs", Bradley said.

"I would have to say two things stick out as the most memorable: the helicopter ride and talking with the staff at the hotel about how they organize weddings here in China," he said.

That was Bradley's first time to be in a helicopter, and he was too absorbed in the "stunning" view of the beautiful coastline.

"I think it is so important to show other Australians the different landscapes China has to offer. I think so many Australians, when they think about China, imagine the historical sites of Beijing and the exciting things to see in Shanghai but have no idea about other beautiful places, like Sanya or many other places people have been taken to in this TV series," Bradley said.

"I'm in China" is a project sponsored by China Intercontinental Communication Centre and other institutions under the guidance of China's State Council Information Office. It invites foreign natives worldwide to experience unique jobs and participate in activities that one can find nowhere else except in China. More than 10,000 photos and articles were submitted from around the globe by over 6,00 applicants.

    1Bradley actually is ________.

    A. an Australian PhD student B. a regular Australian tourist

    C. a recreational manager D. an Australian diplomat

2What does the underlined word "incarporate" in paragraph 4 mean?

    A. get rid of B. take advantage of

    C. take in D. keep off

    3What impressed Bradley most?

    A. The beautiful scenery of Sanya and special activities.

    B. Flying in a helicopter and organizing Chinese wedding.

    C. Chinese traditional customs and many amazing sites.

    D. The historical sites of Beijing and the exciting things in Shanghai.

4From the last paragraph, we can infer that the project "I'm in China" is ________.

    A. funded by some international institutions

    B. special but helpless to know about China

    C. uninteresting and rejected by foreigners

    D. unique and popular with foreigners

  • 29、   In San Francisco, where the number of the homeless has risen by 7% in the last decade, a non-profit organization is putting bathrooms on wheels and driving them to those in need. The group, Lava Mae, is improving retiring city buses and bringing them into different neighborhoods, currently providing about 200 showers each week.

Doniece Sandoval, the founder of Lava Mae, first became interested in the issue in 2012, when she passed a young woman under an overpass near the San Francisco Design Center who was repeating to herself that she'd never get clean. 'It made me wonder what her chances were, ' said Sandoval, who was then inspired to research exactly how many public shower stalls(淋浴间)existed in the city. Her findings were disheartening.

So Lava Mae came together when she heard the city would be retiring cold city buses. 'I told myself, I want those buses!' she said.

Each bus has two private bathrooms, one of which is wheelchair accessible. Along with the basic shower, sink and toilet, the spaces have soft lighting, digital controls for water, and hair dryers.

'Though you're only going to be on the bus for 20 minutes or so, it's 20 minutes of complete privacy,' Said Sandoval.

The buses are parked near agencies that already serve the homeless. 'If we can reduce the amount of time people have to run from place to place to get essential services, we'll be able to make things better, ' said Sandova.

What's next for lava Mae? The group is starting a program so that others can mimic their process. 'What we're hoping to do is to get people to follow what we do, so they can recreate it.' she said.

1We know from Paragraph One that in San Francisco, _______.

A.the homeless' poor life has come to the government's attention

B.the number of the people who have no house to live has increased

C.many houses are being built for the homeless

D.city buses are equipped with bathrooms

2What made Doniece Sandoval start the idea of founding Lava Mae?

A.Her deep love for city buses.

B.Her hearing homeless woman's problem by chance.

C.The number of the homeless has risen in the last decade.

D.Her talk with a young woman.

3In Doniece Sandoval’s opinion, what is the disadvantage of their services?

A.Each user is given only twenty minutes.

B.Each bus has a limited number of bathrooms.

C.Some people have to travel far to use the buses.

D.The bathrooms are not intended for the disabled.

4The underlined word 'mimic' in the last paragraph can be replaced by _________.

    A.copy B.improve C.praise D.study

5What can be a suitable title for the text?

A.The Current Situation of the Poor People in San Francisco

  • 34、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can only be used once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

Driving an electric car 1 to the protection of environment, or so the marketing departments of their makers would have you believe. Yet a report which analyzes car emissions presents a rather different picture. A battery-powered car recharged with 2 generated by coal-fired power stations, it found, is likely to be more harmful. It could cause more than three times as many deaths from pollution as a 3 petrol-driven vehicle.

The study was carried out by the University of Minnesota. The researchers estimated how levels of fine particulate matter (细颗粒物) and ground-level ozone two important 4 of air pollution — would change when a car is powered by different ways.

It was no surprise that electric cars whose batteries were recharged with power from wind, solar or hydro-electric sources came out to be virtually free from harmful 5. They were estimated to cause 231 deaths over the course of a year, compared with 878 for petrol cars. Electric cars recharged with power from natural gas-fired stations were also a lot less harmful than petrol-driven ones, with 439 deaths. But if those same electric cars were recharged 6 by coal, they would be responsible for over 3,000 deaths.

Biofuels also caused more health problems than petrol. But diesel, which often  7 concern about pollution, is slightly cleaner than petrol. This is because the study assumes for all cars that emission-control technologies will be more widely used, especially particulate filters which have a remarkable effect on cleaning diesel 8. Diesel cars are also more 9 of fuel than petrol-driven ones.

Overall, the study shows that electric cars are cleaner than those traditional vehicles only if the power used to charge then is also clean. That is hardly a surprise, but the 10 of the difference is. How green electric cars really are, then, will depend mainly on where they are driven. In France, which obtains more than half of its power from nuclear station, electric cars look like a good bet. In China and some other developing countries, where a large amount of electricity is produced from coal, they may not be so environment- friendly as they are marketed.

Why Cold weather Causes So many Flight Cancellation?

Each year, about 60,000 flights get canceled because of bad winter weather, which costs airlines and airports an estimated $3 billion. But it’s not the freezing cold temperatures that cause problems for planes. After all, 1 jets fly 10 kilometers up, where temperatures hover around -50 degrees Celsius.

In fact, planes 2 in cold weather, since cold air is denser and leads to better thrust. Clearly, the real problem isn’t what’s going on up there. It’s what’s happening on the ground.

When a 3 polar vortex (极地涡旋) struck the Midwestern US in January 2019, temperatures dropped to -40 degrees Celsius and airline canceled 3,000 flights nationwide. In these situations, when temperatures start 4, everything slows down. Cargo doors can freeze up, along with the nozzles that pump fuel into planes, which delays the 5 process.

Even the plane itself can freeze over. Just a quarter-inch - thick layer of ice on a plane can disrupt the way air flows over its wings.

Les Westbrooks: The number one reason, I would say, that the reason flights get delayed in cold weather is going to be because there’s some kind of frozen precipitation, from frost to snow to a sheet of ice, adhering to the aircraft, adhering to the wings of the aircraft 6.

That’s Les Westbrooks, a retired airline pilot and an associate professor of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He says that 7, these planes are “de-iced” - but this also delays takeoff. The crew can spray the plane with a special hot water/ glycol mixture. It can take around 40 minutes to de-ice large passenger airplanes, so planes often have to wait “their turn” for the de-icing station, which, of course, can trigger more delays.

And ice on the runway, of course, creates another set of 8. In 2014, a plane at JFK skidded off an icy runway and into a mound of snow, leading to an hours-long shutdown at the airport. And even though crews can remove ice from the runway, scraping it off the pavement can lead to potholes (坑洞) and other 9, which makes takeoffs and landings more dangerous. And of course, snow and freezing rain on the ground can affect visibility to the point where officials have to decide it’s not safe to fly at all.

But if ice and snow aren’t the problem in these extremely cold temperatures, it’s usually another factor: people.

Les Westbrooks: The airplane flies at high altitudes, -60 degrees. It’s made to do that. Humans are not made to be outside in -60 degrees weather. And so the human factor becomes a big, big factor, when it becomes extremely cold.

Baggage handlers, aircraft fuelers, and mechanics all have to stay warm. Some airports, like O’Hare in Chicago, set up heated shelters for their employees. Of course, with everyone taking breaks to warm up, not as much gets done, which leads to even more delays and cancellations. Passengers start missing their 10 flights, and that, along with passengers who can’t make it to the airport due to bad road conditions, leads to half-empty planes.

In fact, many airlines might preemptively cancel flights before bad weather even hits. So, in the end, you can still blame cold weather for cancelling your flight.
