26、Thirty-five years ago, with just one acre of land, a couple of seeds and a bucket of hope, one Nigerian-born scientist began his mission to defeat famine (饥荒) on his continent.
News of the drought across Africa in the early 1980s troubled Nzamujo. Equipped with a microbiology PhD and his faith, he travelled back to Africa. There, he found a continent ecologically rich, diverse and capable of producing food. He believes drought wasn’t the only reason for widespread hunger, and that sustainability had been left out.
Nzamujo began designing a “zero waste” agriculture system that would not only increase food security, but also help the environment and create jobs. In 1985, he started his sustainable farm “Songhai” in the West African country of Benin.
Nzamajo lives on the farm and constantly updates his techniques. He credits his degrees in science and engineering for Songhai’s success. But he also thanks his spiritual and cultural roots, and his father — a driving force in his life who encouraged him to pursue his studies to the highest degree and to use Songhai to share his knowledge.
Songhai has several “eco-literacy” development programs. They range from 18-month training courses for farmer-enterprisers, to shorter stays to learn techniques like weeding. People come from all over the world to study Nzamujo’s methods.
After seeing success on his first zero waste farm, he expanded throughout Benin and western Africa. Today, the Songhai model is applied across the continent, including Nigena. Uganda, Sierra Leone and Liberia, Nzamujo says they've trained more than 7.000 farmer-enterprisers and more than 30, 000 people in total since it began.
Nzamujo believes zero waste agriculture is now steadily tackling the issues he set out to defeat, hunger, unemployment and environmental declines. And he wants to see it go further.

Elephant seals in funny-looking hats are helping NASA study climate science.
Equipped with specialized sensors that resemble tiny metal hats with antennae(大线),these seals are collecting data that's helping researchers track how heat moves through ocean currents. A team of climate scientists led by Lia Siegelman used this clever technique to track changes in temperature as the seal swam the icy waters of the Antarctic.
With the help of one particularly female seal, the researchers discovered that heat stored at the ocean's depths can sometimes get swirled(打旋)back up to the surface thanks to some deeply penetrating(穿透)currents. While researchers have known that these currents can ferry heat downward into the ocean's interior(内部),the new findings suggest the opposite is true as well-driving a process that can warm the sea's surface as well.
Siegelman thinks it's important to include this new information into existing climate models. Before seals entered the picture, scientists had a pretty limited view of what went on beneath the surface of the Southern Ocean. Here, temperatures can suddenly fall below-1℃,and thick sheets of sea ice block instruments from collecting data. All in all,it's a pretty unappealing area for underwater field work.
But none of that troubles southern elephant seals, which spend nine to ten months of each year at sea, swimming thousands of miles and diving up to half a mile beneath the ocean surface-usually about 80 times a day.
So Siegelman and her colleagues tagged a female elephant seal on the Kerguelen Islands. The researchers followed her 3,000-mile journey, during which she dived 6,333 times."Even when they sleep, they dive,"Siegelman said.“They float down like a leaf."
Combined with satellite images, the wealth of data the seal recovered gave Siegelman and her team a clearer picture than they'd ever been afforded before. It's probably safe to say that the significance of this was lost on the seal. But from the human perspective(观点),it's clear seals are filling in some massive gaps in knowledge.
【1】How did the researchers collect climate data in the Antarctic?
A.By testing a high-tech hat.
B.By studying a seal's behavior.
C.By measuring the water temperature.
D.By attaching a sensor to a seal's head.
【2】The new findings indicate that_
A.ocean currents can drive heat up to the surface
B.heat can be taken down into the ocean's interior
C.the warm temperatures can help seals dive deep
D.the world's waters can balance global warming
【3】The researchers used seals to monitor the Southern Ocean probably because.
A.the scenery is unattractive
B.the sea floor is changeable
C.seals are aggressive hunters
D.seals are extraordinary divers
【4】What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Seals help us observe the unknown world.
B.Satellites are used to track human activities.
C.The ocean presents a more beautiful picture.
D.Data are analyzed for better survival of seals.
28、Negative thoughts we have about ourselves can destroy our spirits. Many of us have problems with negative thoughts. The negative thoughts lead to bad feelings and they make you believe that the bad things you are suffering are actually true. In short, they bring your focus on your failures, which will make you depressed. What can you do to avoid negative thoughts to affect you?【1】
Recognize that actions always follow beliefs
Whatever you believe, you’ll experience more of them. 【2】. So start believing the best about yourself and believe that you’re valuable person.
Picture the good things
If you want to change the negative tapes playing in your heads, you have to imagine yourself positively that means judging yourself right. 【3】. How would that look? Draw it in your mind and expand it.
【4】
You may talk to yourself with statements like "if only" or "what if". The former keeps reminding you of the past with regret, while the latter keeps you fearful of the future. There is nothing you can do about the past and the future isn't here yet.
Develop positive views
Instead of always putting yourself down in your head, think of some things you actually like about yourself. Tell yourself " I am able. I'm good at it." instead of saying "I'm not good enough", 【5】.
Thinking poorly gets us nowhere and is extremely self-limiting. Decide, today, to turn off the negative channel in your mind and develop your true possibilities.
A.Forget the past
B.Live in the moment
C.Here are some suggestions
D.Make friends with optimistic people
E.Imagine a picture about yourself
F.Always keep positive, rather than say something negative
G.You’ll also find your actions are suitable for your beliefs
29、 It seemed like a typical November day two years ago, as I walked out of Walgreens, a store near my house. It was just a month after my grandmother had passed away and I spent my days running useless errands (杂事) hoping to fill the emptiness in my heart and distract me from the pain.
As I attempted to walk out of the store, I felt exhausted and hopeless and began walking to my car. Suddenly, a woman driving right by my side rolled down her window. “Excuse me, excuse me, excuse me,” she said loudly. Thinking she was going to ask for my parking spot, I simply pointed to my car. “No, excuse me,” she said again. At this point, 1 felt I had no choice but to see what this annoying lady wanted. Under a clutter of makeup, money, pens, and other belongings, she finally reached to the very bottom of her bag and handed me a three -page booklet. “It looks like you need this,” she said calmly with a warm smile on her face. I looked down at the mysterious and obviously used pamphlet and on the front cover in big bold letters read “What Hope for Dead Loved Ones?” It took me only a few seconds to understand the exchange with this woman, but by the time I looked up, she was gone. I felt a sense of relaxation as I opened the first page. It explained how people pass away, but their spirit remains with us. This was the first time since my grandma had passed that I felt her with me, just like I had wanted. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, but I did know that I finally felt happiness from the surprising change in events.
I couldn't, and still can't, believe what had happened to me on that day. It was a random day in November when my life turned back around and I began to feel hope again. It was real. It was a miracle. And, I'll remember it for the rest of my life.
【1】Why did the author spend days doing useless things?
A.To kill her spare time. B.To relieve the suffering.

【2】Why did the woman say “Excuse me” so loudly?
A.To catch the author's attention. B.To get the author's parking space.
C.To share her experience with the author. D.To complain about the author's improper behavior.
【3】What can be learned about the three- page booklet?
A.It included some mysterious stories.
B.It was a gift from her grandmother.
C.It gave people some advice on how to find happiness.
D.It showed that people's spirit would stay after death.
【4】What can be the best title for the text?

34、
Rapidly advancing technology and its impact on education has been a subject of debate. How can schools equip students with the skills they need to succeed in a challenging job market?
Since technology is driving these changes, there is a theory that governments should keep focusing on STEM subjects. These are often referred to as “hard skills,” which are 【1】 in primary school and right through to university level. In the meantime, ‘soft skills’ are being 【2】.
This is a mistake. Much evidence suggests that soft skills are far more 【3】 to graduates in the long term. Research from Harvard University on the global job market has shown that STEM- related careers grew strongly between 1989 and 2000 but have slowed down since. In contrast, jobs in the creative industries----the sector probably most 【4】 with the need for soft skills---are growing rapidly. Soft skills are, in fact, increasingly in demand in the workplace: Google cites creativity, leadership 【5】 and communication skills as top requirements for both potential and current employees.
So why are soft skills so highly 【6】 for?
With the rapid evolution of technology, a focus on hard skills leaves students 【7】 to change, as these often have a short shelf life. According to research by World Economic Forum, more than one in four adults reports a mismatch between their skills and those needed for their job role. If soft skills are taught well, these skills should enable students to adapt to change more easily and progress further in their 【8】 career.
Of course, technical skills are important. But without the curriculum placing equal--- if not greater --- 【9】 on soft skills, our education systems are missing a huge trick. Hard skills may help a student get a job in a particular industry, but soft skills will help them disrupt it, achieving a wider 【10】 in their chosen field.

My daughter
(A story told by a father, a famous actor)
My wife and I only had the one child. We had Amy.
I see her as my best friend. I think she’d always come to me first if she had a problem. We have the same sense of humor, and share interests. 【1】 I don’t mind animals, she’s completely fascinated with them, and she has always had dogs, cats, horses, and goldfish in her life.
We were 【2】 (close) when she was about four, which I think is a lovely age for a child. They know the parents best, and don’t have outside contacts. She must have grown up suddenly when she went to school, because I remember her growing away from her family slightly. Any father who has a teenager daughter comes across an extraordinary collection of people, and there seemed to be an endless stream of strange young men 【3】 (come) through our house. By the time I learned their names they 【4】 (go) away and I had to start learning a new lot.
I wanted more than anything else for her to be happy in 【5】 she was doing, and I was prepared to pull strings to help her on her way. When she left a good school she decided she wanted to become an actress so I got her into drama school. It wasn’t to her liking so she joined a theatre group and began doing bits and pieces in films. She was doing well, but then gave it up. She probably found it boring. Then she took up social work, and finally went to work 【6】a designer and he became her husband. And that’s really the story of her life. She must be happy with him—they’re always together.
We have such similar tastes in books and music 【7】 I used to take her to see an opera, which is my big passion. However, I don’t think she likes it very much. She doesn’t come with me anymore.
I don’t think she’s a big television watcher. She knows when I’m on the television, and she 【8】 watch, but I don’t know. It’s not the kind of thing she tells me.
We’re very grateful for Amy. She’s a good daughter as daughters go. We’re looking forward to being grandparents.

THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE
In Congress, July 4, 1776
When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s god entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should d【1】 the causes which impel them to the separation.

Until Victor arrived. No one would have said that Victor or his dad looked like tough guys : they were very thin and had no muscles . however, this was what Victor said to Ramon when Roman went up to him to make him afraid .
“Hey , new kid. You should know that I am the leader , and I am the toughest guy here.”
“You might be the leader but I am the toughest guy here.”
That was when Victor got his first beating .The second was the day Ramon tried to take a girl’s sandwich from her .
“This girl is a friend of mine and I am the toughest guy in school .So she will not give you her sandwich.” ---were Victor’s last words before the blows started raining down on him.

“Tough guys like my dad and me do not steal from others ,and you are supposed to be a tough guy too ?” he replied .
Victor got hit regularly ,but he never backed down(临阵退缩) . His bravery in protecting those weaker than him began to impress the rest of his classmates , and he soon gained admirers. Lots of other children began to play with him , so Ramon had even fewer chances to hit Vitor and his friends .
One day ,at the school door ,Ramon’s dad asked him who Victor was .
