26、 As you move out of your teens and into your 20s and 30s, your musical tastes start to solidify and you likely quit keeping up with popular music. Now, research has found the average age at which your music library is unlikely to change: 33.
The study's author reached this conclusion by analyzing data on U.S. Spotify users and comparing it to artist popularity data from music intelligence company The Echo Nest.
To determine the age at which we stop seeking out new tunes, the author gathered self-reported age data from Spotify and looked at users' "Taste Profiles," which tacks how many times listeners have streamed individual artists. These artists were then: matched to their popularity rank on The Echo Nest.
The average teen listens almost only to music among the Billboard, the 200 highest-ranking albums in the country, but this music represents a smaller part of their steaming as they age. In their teens, they listen to a lot of the same music, over and over again. Frank T. McAndrew, a professor of psychology at Knox Coll explains that's the "mere exposure effect" at work, and it basically means, the more we're exposed to something, the more we like it.
There are many reasons why a person may stop streaming the current top musical hits, and the author looked into one by identifying Spotify listeners with large amounts of children's music and nursery rhymes in their libraries. In other words, when users may have become parents.
But the study concludes with some good news for parents: “If you're getting older and can't find yourself staying as relevant as you used to, have no fear — just wait for your kids to become teenagers, and you'll get exposed to all the popular music of the day once again!”
【1】What happens after teens grow older?
A.They quit listening to music.
B.Their interest in music fades.
C.Their musical tastes become stable.
D.They change their music libraries.
【2】How do teens develop their musical tastes?
A.They act like their favorite popular stars.
B.They listen to what they like repeatedly.
C.They experience different styles of music.
D.They like high-ranking music worldwide.
【3】What's the good news for parents in the last paragraph?
A.Parents will regain their faith in music.
B.Parents will influence their teens in music.
C.Parents will hear their favorite music again.
D.Parents will enjoy the music for teens again.
27、Down-to-earth means being honest, open, and easy to deal with. It is a pleasure to find someone who is down-to-earth. A person who is down-to-earth is easy to talk to. He or she accepts others as equals. A down-to-earth person may be an important member of society, of course, but they do not let their importance go to their heads, and they do not consider themselves to be better than others who are less important. Someone who is filled with self-importance and pride, often without cause, is said to have his nose in the air. There is no way a person with his nose in the air can be down-to-earth.
Americans use another expression that is similar in some way to down-to-earth. The expression is both feet on the ground. Someone with both feet on the ground is a person with a good understanding of reality. He has what is called common sense. He may have dreams but he does not allow them to block his knowledge of what is real. The opposite kind of person is one who has his head in the clouds. A man with his head in the clouds is a dreamer whose mind is not in the world. Sometimes such a dreamer can be brought back to reality; sharp words from the teacher, for example, can usually get a daydreaming student to put both feet back on the ground.
The person who is down-to-earth usually has both feet on the ground. But the opposite is not always true. Someone with both feet on the ground may not be as open and easy to deal with as someone who is down-to-earth. When we have both our feet firmly on the ground, we are realistic and we act honestly and openly toward others, and our lives are like the ground below us, solid and strong.
【1】If a person has his nose in the air, he ____.
A. is down to the earth B. is easy to deal with
C. always thinks he is more important than others D. is confident
【2】From the second paragraph, we know that sharp words from a teacher can usually ________.
A. help a student get down to the earth
B. wake a student up
C. help a daydreaming student come down to the ground
D. help a daydreaming student to become more realistic
【3】The underlined sentence “But the opposite is not always true.” most probably means that ______.
A. the person who has his nose in the air is not true
B. a man with his head in the clouds is often not intelligent
C. the opposite direction is always wrong
D. a person who has both feet on the ground may not be down-to-earth
【4】From the passage, we can infer the person who is _______ is the most popular kind of person.
A. down-to-earth B. standing on the ground
C. with his nose in the air D. with his head in the clouds
28、MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) has released a video of their ongoing work using muscle signals to control devices. Their latest involves full and fine control of drones (无人机), using just hand and arm gestures to pilot through a series of circles.
This work is impressive not just because they’re using bio-feedback to control the devices, instead of optical (光学的)or other kinds of gesture recognition, but also because of how specific the controls can be, setting up a range of different potential applications for this kind of remote tech.
This particular group of researchers has been looking at different applications for this tech, including its use in collaborative robotics (协作机器人)for potential industrial applications. Drone piloting is another area that could have big applications in terms of real- world use, especially once you start to imagine entire groups of these taking flight with a pilot provided a view of what they can see via VR. That could be a great way to do spot surveying for construction, for example, or remote equipment check of dangerous places and other construction that’s hard for people to reach.
The development of drones is just part of the team’s work. Smooth robot and human interaction is the ultimate goal of the team working on this tech. Researchers believe the process should be as easy when controlling and working with robots. They say thinking and doing are essentially happening at the same time when we communicate with our environment, but when we act through machines or remote tools, there’s often something lost in translation, showing slow learning, and the requirement of lots of training. Therefore, much more work is going on.
【1】What is impressive about the work?
A.It has found the best way to control robots.
B.It uses gestures to accurately control the devices.
C.The researchers are particular and famous experts.
D.Its remote tech has been used in some industrial areas.
【2】What does paragraph 3 try to tell us?
A.The big changes of future industries.
B.The new way to spot construction sites.
C.The possible application of the tech in real world.
D.The benefits that VR technology brings to drones,
【3】What is the aim of the research according to the last paragraph?
A.To make it possible for robots to think.
B.To speed up the learning process of robots.
C.To meet the requirement of robot controlling.
D.To enable more natural human-robot communication.
【4】What’s the best title for this text?
A.New Applications of Drones
B.Muscle Signals Can Pilot Drones
C.MIT’s New Research on Robots
D.Possibilities of New Robots
29、When I was growing up, Oprah was my favorite imaginary auntie. She lived inside the TV and I looked forward to visiting her every day at 4 P.M. For one hour every Monday through Friday, I got to watch a Black woman command the airwaves and have control over the world. As a little black girl in a big White world, that was a powerful thing to witness—especially in a culture where girls like me seldom saw ourselves positively reflected in the media.
The kind of beauty celebrated around us had a way of making little black girls feel as if the bodies we were born into were somehow inferior. Apart from Auntie Oprah, the media’s portrayal of Black women was to a great extent limited in variety. Luckily, I had strong examples of women of color in my real life who watered the seeds that helped me believe I could dream beyond what I saw around me.
Fast-forward to two years ago, when I was appointed by longtime Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour to lead Teen Vogue. I thought I was just a girl getting her dream job. But then the headlines hit. Suddenly, I was a Black woman making history. At 29 I had become only the second Black person and the youngest ever to helm (掌舵) a Condé Nast magazine.
Shonda Rhimes, Hollywood supreme black screenwriter, coined the term “First. Only. Different.” Being an FOD in your filed comes with a responsibility and an opportunity to rewrite the rules, to redefine standards, to represent for your communities. In my new position, I had an opportunity to help ensure that little black girls would never doubt their value. I was able to help undo some of the damaging accounts by changing the pages of the magazine to make them more reflective of my world.
My first book, More Than Enough, is not a career guide, because I believe only you can write your own blueprint for success, but I do share some of the hard-earned lessons that I am still learning to live by. My book is not intended as self-help but a love letter to anyone who has ever felt overlooked, overwhelmed, underestimated and undervalued—and who still chose to overcome.
My story, as it’s played out so far, is for all my fellow people of color out there, standing proudly as First, Only and Different. I am writing with love to all those who know what it is to be the lone Black voice in the room, because my story is your story. Trust that you will find your own rhythm and carve out a space to succeed in your own lane. I am also speaking up for anyone in her dream job, facing the barriers no one talks about. When you exist in spaces that weren’t originally built for you, remember that sometimes, just being you is the revolution. And this is especially for the ones who are Next Up, those of you who are responsible for taking the same systems that my generation is now breaking down and building better ones.
As you continue crafting the life you want, I hope you will always bear in mind that it is the very things you underestimate about yourself that will help you to create your own magic. Find it. Use it. Trust it. We spend too much time telling ourselves that we are not enough. Not smart enough. Not beautiful enough. Not successful enough. Not young enough. Not old enough. I want to be the voice reminding you to say “Enough!” to all that. You are enough. You were born enough.
The world is waiting for you. Let’s go.

32、The secret to a successful sequel(续集)—a secret
Keeping the entire cast and crew of a film a secret is hard. But when it’s a massive movie like Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, with some 700 people and 1,000 costumes—including 400 coats alone—it’s next to _________. All precautions are taken: characters are given code names, the smallest details are protected by nondisclosure agreements, and digital scripts are encoded and _________ after a certain amount of time in case of being copied and spread. It’s not quite magic, but it’s close.
The pressure to not reveal anything—even _________—is enough to give Eddie Redmayne a difficult time. “I’ve been sent this funny document which is _________ with double-caps, triple-underlined notes saying, YOU CAN’T TALK ABOUT THIS,” says the Oscar winner, who returns as wizard Newt Scamander in the sequel, which continues the story of the earlier _________. Does he ever tell anyone? He leans in and admits, a little _________, that he does: his wife, Hannah Bagshawe.
How have they successfully kept it a secret? It certainly helps that J. K. Rowling, the writer of the work, is the _________ of keeping secrets. She famously claims to have known crucial plot points from her best-selling book series’ endgame years in advance. Also, Johnny Depp’s _________ appearance in the movie—the actor has been accused of domestic violence by his ex-wife Amber Heard—as the dark wizard Grindelwald was kept under _________ until just two weeks before the first film came out in 2016.
Bearing this commitment to secrecy in mind, it’s no surprise that Rowling has ____________ the details to few people about how the ____________ three movies in the proposed five-part series will playout. Even producer Tim Lewis, who has worked on eight Harry Potter installments, is ____________. “We haven’t seen scripts for the next one,” he says. “I am assuming Rowling knows the whole plan, but I couldn’t say.”
The earnings are high enough: the first Fantastic Beasts movie reached $814 million. That’s a number most studios would ____________, but when it comes to Harry Potter, expectations start sky-high. In a world filled with universes based on existing intellectual property—Star Wars, Marvel—appreciation fatigue is always possible. But for now, the extreme enthusiasm shows no sign of____________: Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, a play based on an idea by Rowling, is a critical and commercial____________. In fact, planes 【2】 in cold weather, since cold air is denser and leads to better thrust. Clearly, the real problem isn’t what’s going on up there. It’s what’s happening on the ground.
When a 【3】 polar vortex (极地涡旋) struck the Midwestern US in January 2019, temperatures dropped to -40 degrees Celsius and airline canceled 3,000 flights nationwide. In these situations, when temperatures start 【4】, everything slows down. Cargo doors can freeze up, along with the nozzles that pump fuel into planes, which delays the 【5】 process.
Even the plane itself can freeze over. Just a quarter-inch - thick layer of ice on a plane can disrupt the way air flows over its wings.
Les Westbrooks: The number one reason, I would say, that the reason flights get delayed in cold weather is going to be because there’s some kind of frozen precipitation, from frost to snow to a sheet of ice, adhering to the aircraft, adhering to the wings of the aircraft 【6】.
That’s Les Westbrooks, a retired airline pilot and an associate professor of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He says that 【7】, these planes are “de-iced” - but this also delays takeoff. The crew can spray the plane with a special hot water/ glycol mixture. It can take around 40 minutes to de-ice large passenger airplanes, so planes often have to wait “their turn” for the de-icing station, which, of course, can trigger more delays.
And ice on the runway, of course, creates another set of 【8】. In 2014, a plane at JFK skidded off an icy runway and into a mound of snow, leading to an hours-long shutdown at the airport. And even though crews can remove ice from the runway, scraping it off the pavement can lead to potholes (坑洞) and other 【9】, which makes takeoffs and landings more dangerous. And of course, snow and freezing rain on the ground can affect visibility to the point where officials have to decide it’s not safe to fly at all.
But if ice and snow aren’t the problem in these extremely cold temperatures, it’s usually another factor: people.
Les Westbrooks: The airplane flies at high altitudes, -60 degrees. It’s made to do that. Humans are not made to be outside in -60 degrees weather. And so the human factor becomes a big, big factor, when it becomes extremely cold.
Baggage handlers, aircraft fuelers, and mechanics all have to stay warm. Some airports, like O’Hare in Chicago, set up heated shelters for their employees. Of course, with everyone taking breaks to warm up, not as much gets done, which leads to even more delays and cancellations. Passengers start missing their 【10】 flights, and that, along with passengers who can’t make it to the airport due to bad road conditions, leads to half-empty planes.
In fact, many airlines might preemptively cancel flights before bad weather even hits. So, in the end, you can still blame cold weather for cancelling your flight.

In 1989, fresh out of high school, I had the difficult task of choosing a career path before college started in three months. In those days in Pakistan, there were limited options: becoming a doctor or an engineer, or entering the financial world after getting a business degree. I wasn’t interested in engineering, so that I was left with medicine or business. I couldn’t decide.
My uncle, an influential person in the family, suggested that I do a work placement to experience it for a month in an international company followed by a month in a hospital. After that, I could make a decision. It seemed like a brilliant idea.
I was accepted for a month’s placement at a foreign bank in Karachi. I got a feel for how the world of finance functioned, made new friends, and generally enjoyed the mostly easy-going work surroundings.
The month passed rapidly, and soon I began working at a leading hospital in Karachi. The experience couldn’t have been more different. The hospital had an intense environment. The days started early (at 7 am, compared to 9 am at the bank), and were filled with endless duties. And the night calls! This was crazy, working all day, through the night, and again the next day.
I began thinking about my two experiences. The bank had offered a more relaxing atmosphere, better working hours and less stress. The hospital was full of excitement and unpredictability, but the studying and training was difficult. It seemed that the business option was going to win out.
Near the end of my month at the hospital, I was driving home after an especially busy night call. In front of me was a public bus, with college students sitting on the top. As the driver weaved through (穿梭) traffic, I could see the boys shaking from side to side.
Paragraph1: Suddenly, a boy fell off the back of the bus.

Paragraph2: The next day, when I went to hospital to see the boy, all his family got up, with grateful smiles on their faces.
