  • 26、   Richard Dermer is a pizza shop owner. But he is better known for his hobby. As a extraordinary kite collector, people are impressed by kites covering the walls from all over the world when they walk into his pizza shop.

Dermer worked at Hideaway. He bought the pizza shop in 1960. Then, in 1970, his game-partner and manager at Hideaway was the first to market the Japanese version of the game Go in the United States. It was this game that led Dermer to kites, and from there he took off—eventually becoming president of the American Kiefliers Association.

Dermer now has a huge kite collection. He told Collectors Weekly, “Initially, I was a novice, but I enjoyed learning, trying to acquire more about kites. And the more I got into kite festivals and collecting kites, the more I discovered and the deeper the subject became.”

What Dermer’s collection and hobby brings to the United States is an international perspective and history on kite flying. In India, for example, kite flying is a fierce, sometimes violent sport, while in Thailand, kite battles reflect the war of the sexes between men and women. Kites were used in World War II, to distract German planes and for target practice.

When Dermer started stunt kite (特技风筝), it was pretty new. All the kites were triangular, and they all looked the same. But soon with his efforts, that changed. People could see kites of all shapes, sizes and colors flying in the sky. During the 1980s and 1990s kites went through quite a developmental stage where they were getting better and better as new lighter, stronger materials were being developed. Dermer even set up the new rules for judging these stunt kite competitions, which take into account how much control the flier has, and the difficulty of the moves.

    1What is Richard Dermer’s occupation?

A.A plane pilot. B.A food businessman.

C.A kite seller. D.A sales manager.

2What does the underlined word “novice” in paragraph 3 mean?

    A.Advanced person. B.Learned person.

    C.Inexperienced person. D.Well-known person.

3What can we learn about the kites from paragraph 4?

A.Kites are not popular in the USA. B.Flying kites is illegal in Thailand.

C.Kites played a part in World War II. D.Flying kites is an interesting sport in India.

4With the efforts of Richard Dermer, kites became ________.

    A.portable B.diverse C.available D.delicate

  • 27、Go Green Without a Green Thumb

If you’re anything like me, you manage to kill absolutely every plant that comes your way. Whatever the opposite of a green thumb is, that’s what I have. No matter how hard I try, I can’t manage to keep flowers alive for more than a few days.

So I’ve taken matters into my own hands and made a list of plants that even I couldn’t kill, and decided to share it with everyone out there who also lacks a green thumb.

    1. Jade

We commonly think of jade as a beautiful stone, but it also happens to be a plant that requires hardly any care and will give your apartment an air of elegance. There are only two things you need to do to take care of this plant:

    • Water the plant when the soil becomes moderately dry.

    • Wipe down the leaves every once in a while to remove dust.

    2. African Violet

Want to add a little color to your apartment? That can be challenging if you don’t have a green thumb—most flowering plants require a ton of care. Fortunately, African violets are not one of those plants.

Simply water them once a week and enjoy their beautiful blue, pink and purple hues! Just do your best to avoid getting any water on the plants’ leaves, as this can cause water spots.

    3. Aloe

Aloe is also a plant that even the worst gardener among us can manage to keep alive.

    Step one: Acquire plant.

Step two: Water it when the soil is completely dry, about every two to three weeks.

Note: Aloe can be poisonous for your pet. If you have pets, make sure to only plant pet-friendly plants.

    4. Lucky Bamboo

To bring some good fortune into your apartment, purchase some lucky bamboo. This houseplant does best in dim lighting, so keep it away from windows. Other than that, all you need to do is make sure the roots are always covered in water (an inch or two should do the trick).

1What does the underlined phrase “a green thumb” in paragraph 1 refer to?

A.An environmentally friendly lifestyle. B.A talent to grow plants.

C.A way to kill all the plants. D.An ability to decorate one’s apartment.

2Which of the following plants needs watering frequently?

    A.Jade. B.African Violet.

    C.Aloe. D.Lucky Bamboo.

3What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

A.To introduce several plants that requires little special care.

B.To share with readers the author’s opinion on growing plants.

C.To attract readers to buy some of their products on the list.

D.To call on readers to protect the environment in daily life.

  • 28、   You might have heard about identity theft: it’s what can happen when a thief gets enough of someone’s information to commit fraud (诈骗). Why should people care about it? Because recovering a stolen identity can be a time- consuming and expensive process. Imagine that someone pretends to be you: they use your name; they even convince businesses that they’re you and they open a credit card in your name, get a cell phone in your name, or buy things using a credit card that has your name on it.

ID thieves can be creative about getting your information. There are some low-tech ways they get it: sometimes they steal garbage, going through it to find personal information, or they steal mail.

There are high-tech ways, too: ID thieves might put software onto your computer without you knowing it — it can happen when you open an email attachment, click on a pop-up(弹出窗口)advertisement, or download some music files. Some software lets a thief see everything on your computer, and record everything you type on your computer.

Unfortunately, even if you’re really careful with your personal information, thieves can still get it. Sometimes, they hack(入侵)into computer systems at stores or schools, hospitals or businesses. They look for personal information to use or sell to other thieves.

It’s pretty easy for you and your family to make it harder for a thief to steal your identity. You can start with the low-tech defenses: being careful with your mail and garbage. Tear anything that has personal information on it before you throw it away. And be sure to take care with your purse, your wallet, or your backpack.

Practice some routine higher-tech defensive plays, too: protect your computer by installing (安装 ) and turning on an up-to-date firewall along with anti-spyware and anti-virus software. Once you are online, be careful you’re your personal information. Some sites might ask for a credit card number, stop and check if they really need that number. When you get email or pop-ups on your computer, don’t respond automatically. Emails that ask you to reply or click a link could be thieves trying to trick you into giving them your personal information. It’s a technique called “phishing”, because the thieves are fishing for your information. Stop and think before you click.

1The purpose of the first paragraph is to tell readers that ______.

    A. people worry about identity theft

    B. it is important to avoid identity theft

    C. it is too difficult to recover a stolen identity

    D. thieves manage to obtain personal information

2The underlined word “plays” in Paragraph 6 probably means  ______.

    A. tasks B. games

    C. exercises D. measures

3Which of the following is an effective way of preventing identity theft?

    A. Take the Social Security card with you.

    B. Click on a link only after considering whether it’s safe.

    C. Enter your credit card number on personal computers only.

    D. Throw anything with your personal information in the garbage.

  • 29、   Working women make up nearly half of the U.S. workforce, and 51 percent of professional workers, like doctors, lawyers, nurses and accountants, are female. While climbing the career ladder can be rewarding, it often comes with one big downside: weight gain!

New research published this week in the International Journal of Obesity shows that working women are more likely to be overweight, and the more you work, the more pounds you're likely to pile on. Like many women, I work..., a lot! As a selfemployed nutrition communications specialist, I sit at my desk, in front of a computer, for hours on end. Sitting alone is one of the worst things you can do for your health, and it's directly linked to being overweight and increased fatness, so the fact that women in the workforce gain weight isn't that surprising. If you work, you have less time to move around. Obesity researchers are revealing many other ways that employment is harmful to your diet and waistline.

In the International Journal of Obesity study, some 9, 276 Australian women aged 4550 had their body weight and employment status monitored for two years. Results? Those who worked more than 35 hours were likely to gain weight compared to those who worked fewer hours or were out of the workforce. What' s more, the more hours a woman worked in a week, the more weight she gained.

The authors of the Australian study attribute weight gain among working women to inactivity, lack of time for food preparation, more use of prepared foods, high levels of stress, lack of sleep and consuming more alcohol. I'll also add in travelmeals eaten out and working at night as other factors that I can find to make balancing work with a healthy diet a challenge.

1The text above is probably taken from__________.

A.a sports report B.a fashion journal

C.a health and fitness magazine D.an advertisement post

2A woman who works as an accountant is more likely to__________.

A.gain more weight B.have more time to move around

    C.work a full time job D.keep a balanced diet

3Which is NOT the cause of working women weight gaining according to the passage?

A.Lacking time for food preparation. B.Using more prepared food.

C.Consuming too much alcohol. D.Taking part in more activities.

4What can be a suitable title for the test?

A.Less activity leads to fat. B.Ways of gaining weight.

C.Effects of weight gaining. D.Working women more likely pile on pounds.

    THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

    In Congress, July 4, 1776

When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bonds which have connected them with another, and to assume among the Powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s god entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should d1 the causes which impel them to the separation.

We h2 these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created e3, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable R4, that among these are life, L5, and the pursuit of Happiness.

That to secure these rights, g 6 are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.

That whenever any form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the P 7 to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, l8 its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such f9, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that Governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience has shown, that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariable the same Object, evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their d 10, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security.

Why Cold weather Causes So many Flight Cancellation?

Each year, about 60,000 flights get canceled because of bad winter weather, which costs airlines and airports an estimated $3 billion. But it’s not the freezing cold temperatures that cause problems for planes. After all, 1 jets fly 10 kilometers up, where temperatures hover around -50 degrees Celsius.

In fact, planes 2 in cold weather, since cold air is denser and leads to better thrust. Clearly, the real problem isn’t what’s going on up there. It’s what’s happening on the ground.

When a 3 polar vortex (极地涡旋) struck the Midwestern US in January 2019, temperatures dropped to -40 degrees Celsius and airline canceled 3,000 flights nationwide. In these situations, when temperatures start 4, everything slows down. Cargo doors can freeze up, along with the nozzles that pump fuel into planes, which delays the 5 process.

Even the plane itself can freeze over. Just a quarter-inch - thick layer of ice on a plane can disrupt the way air flows over its wings.

Les Westbrooks: The number one reason, I would say, that the reason flights get delayed in cold weather is going to be because there’s some kind of frozen precipitation, from frost to snow to a sheet of ice, adhering to the aircraft, adhering to the wings of the aircraft 6.

That’s Les Westbrooks, a retired airline pilot and an associate professor of aeronautical science at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. He says that 7, these planes are “de-iced” - but this also delays takeoff. The crew can spray the plane with a special hot water/ glycol mixture. It can take around 40 minutes to de-ice large passenger airplanes, so planes often have to wait “their turn” for the de-icing station, which, of course, can trigger more delays.

And ice on the runway, of course, creates another set of 8. In 2014, a plane at JFK skidded off an icy runway and into a mound of snow, leading to an hours-long shutdown at the airport. And even though crews can remove ice from the runway, scraping it off the pavement can lead to potholes (坑洞) and other 9, which makes takeoffs and landings more dangerous. And of course, snow and freezing rain on the ground can affect visibility to the point where officials have to decide it’s not safe to fly at all.

But if ice and snow aren’t the problem in these extremely cold temperatures, it’s usually another factor: people.

Les Westbrooks: The airplane flies at high altitudes, -60 degrees. It’s made to do that. Humans are not made to be outside in -60 degrees weather. And so the human factor becomes a big, big factor, when it becomes extremely cold.

Baggage handlers, aircraft fuelers, and mechanics all have to stay warm. Some airports, like O’Hare in Chicago, set up heated shelters for their employees. Of course, with everyone taking breaks to warm up, not as much gets done, which leads to even more delays and cancellations. Passengers start missing their 10 flights, and that, along with passengers who can’t make it to the airport due to bad road conditions, leads to half-empty planes.

In fact, many airlines might preemptively cancel flights before bad weather even hits. So, in the end, you can still blame cold weather for cancelling your flight.

  • 40、请认真阅读下面文字,并按照要求用英语写一篇150词左右的文章。

A good book can expose readers to a weird (不可思议的) place — a place which you could call art or fiction. I call it wonder, for those moments where a story — no matter how strange — has some semblance (样子) of truth, and then you’re able to believe it. It’s not just kids who can get there. Adults can too, and we get there when we read. It’s why people will take the walking tour of Bloomsday and see everything that happened in Ulysses. Or people visit Baker Street to see Sherlock Holmes’ apartment. We know these characters aren’t real, but we have real feelings about them.

There is a word called metafiction (超小说) and that’s just stories about stories. And one metafictive technique is breaking the fourth wall. If I am going to break down the fourth wall, I want fiction to escape and come into the real world.  I want a book to be a secret door that opens and lets stories out into reality.
