26、If you want your life to stand for peace and kindness, it’s helpful to do kind, peaceful things. One of my favorite ways to do this is by developing my own helping actions. These little acts of kindness are opportunities to be of service and reminders of how good it feels to be kind and helpful.
We live in a rural area of the San Francisco Bay Area. Most of what we see is beauty of nature. One of the exceptions to the beauty is the litter that some people throw out of their windows as they are driving on the rural roads. One of the few shortcomings to live in the mountainous area is that public services, such as litter collection, are less available than those are closer to the city.
A helping action that I practice regularly with my two children is picking up litter in our surrounding area. We’ve become so used to doing this that my daughters will often say to me in exciting voices, “There’s some litter, Daddy, stop the car!” And if we have time, we will often pull over and pick it up. It may seem strange, but we actually enjoy it. We pick up litter in parks, on sidewalks, practically anywhere. Once I even saw a complete stranger picking up litter close to where we live. He smiled at me and said, “I saw you doing it, and it seemed like a good idea.”
Picking up litter is only one of endless supplies of possible helping actions. You might like holding a door open for people, visiting lonely elderly people in nursing homes, or removing snow off someone else’s driveway. Think of something that seems effortless yet helpful .It’s fun, personally rewarding, and sets a good example. Everyone wins.

28、My youngest son has a severe form of Autism (自闭症). Even though he is in his twenties now he still has the mind of a small child. Things I find silly delight him and little changes that wouldn't bother me at all bother him greatly. Most of the time he is happy but there are also times when he can be terribly upset. He will tear up things and cry for no reason. It always hurts me to see him suffer this way especially when there is little I can do to help.
This morning was particularly trying for him. He broke a new shirt and cried on and off for an hour. Finally he calmed down. I was still feeling stressed, however, and tiredly sat down at my computer to see if I could get a little work done. As I was turning it on, I heard my son laugh for the first time all day. I turned my head and saw him standing directly under the glass angel hanging from our ceiling fan. The light from our house lamps seemed to shine brightly all around him like a halo (光环). His eyes lit up as the little angel swung gently above his head.
At that moment my heart opened. I could see that the miracle was reminding me that my son was more than his Autism. I instead saw the shining soul within. I saw the love and light of his spirit and knew he was here for a purpose. My eyes watered and I appreciated this minor miracle and gentle reminder of his love for all of us.
Miracles are all around us, but we can't always see them with our eyes. We often have to see them with our hearts. Keep your heart open to them then. And let yourself be the miracle you were meant to be!

41、 Roman was the school tough(厉害的) guy because his father was a tough guy. If anyone dared to disobey (不服从)him, they received a beating.
Until Victor arrived. No one would have said that Victor or his dad looked like tough guys : they were very thin and had no muscles . however, this was what Victor said to Ramon when Roman went up to him to make him afraid .
“Hey , new kid. You should know that I am the leader , and I am the toughest guy here.”
“You might be the leader but I am the toughest guy here.”
That was when Victor got his first beating .The second was the day Ramon tried to take a girl’s sandwich from her .
“This girl is a friend of mine and I am the toughest guy in school .So she will not give you her sandwich.” ---were Victor’s last words before the blows started raining down on him.
His third beating came when he did not want to hand over his own sandwich .
“Tough guys like my dad and me do not steal from others ,and you are supposed to be a tough guy too ?” he replied .
Victor got hit regularly ,but he never backed down(临阵退缩) . His bravery in protecting those weaker than him began to impress the rest of his classmates , and he soon gained admirers. Lots of other children began to play with him , so Ramon had even fewer chances to hit Vitor and his friends .
One day ,at the school door ,Ramon’s dad asked him who Victor was .
“That little boy is the tough boy who is the new boss of the playground ?” said Ramon’s father . “You are useless. I am going to hit you and show you what a tough guy really is .”
