26、There’ s no place like home. It’ s the place where we’ re surrounded by our possessions and creature comforts. We purchase things to give our homes a personal touch. And one thing we’re buying more of is houseplants. But are these “living” additions to our homes good for us and the environment?
Houseplants, also known as pot plants, add a natural touch and they have the ability to brighten up a room on a budget. The Royal Horticultural Society found that nearly 72% of adults in the UK had a houseplant in their home, with this figure rising to 80% of 16-24 year olds. A fifth of owners also said they use plants in the home to boost their health and well-being. And average sales last year were up on the previous year.
It seems millennials (千禧代) are driving the growth in the sales of houseplants. More young people are living in flats without a garden. 24-year-old Daisy Hale said “being able to care for something but not having too much commitment—I guess that’s a classic millennial line—is ideal for my lifestyle.”
From hanging baskets, to cacti (仙人掌) and succulent ferns, the choice of vegetation is endless. They are easy to care for, and there have been unproven claims that they improve the air quality in our home. But whatever their benefits, there are now concerns that they might not be so good for the environment. Some are bought online and shipped from overseas. Fay Kenworthy, co-founder of PlantSwap, a community activity that encourages people to trade plants locally, said “this could defeat many local plants.”
But botanist James Wong argues that home delivery has less of an environmental impact than multiple trips to the garden center in a car. Although he’ s not too concerned about the environmental impact, others are worried about the plastic pots they are in and the type of peat (泥炭) that some of them are grown in. However, a sustainable approach to buying them may be the best way forward if we want to introduce some natural greenery into our homes.

27、Experts say over half of the world’s 7,000 languages are in danger of disappearing. Every two weeks one language disappears. As the last speakers of a language die off, the valuable information contained within a language also disappears. 【1】
What would happen if you were the only person left who spoke your language? Who would you share stories with, sing songs to, or exchange jokes with? 【2】 This is the example scientists use to explain the situation of many people around the world whose local languages are disappearing.
Sometimes a language disappears immediately when the last person speaking it dies. 【3】 This happens when an official language is used more often and children stop learning the local language of their parents. This is not a new process. Official languages often represent a form of control over a group of people. Throughout history, the language spoken by a powerful ethnic (种族) group spreads across a kind of culture.
【4】
So, smaller cultures lose their local language as the language of the culture in power becomes the stronger influence.
Languages contain the histories, ideas and knowledge of a culture. Languages also contain valuable information about local medicines, plants and animals. Many endangered languages are spoken by native cultures in close connection with the natural world.
【5】
The Internet could be thought of as a new method of language control. The United Nations cultural organization — UNESCO, says that ninety percent of the world’s languages are not shown on the Internet.
A.Learn a language that will disappear now.
B.Or a local language might disappear more slowly.
C.That’s why endangered languages must be protected.

28、I am connected to many people working as volunteers all over the world, even after COVID-19 broke out.
Twelve days ago, I was contacted by someone I know, a person from Kenya. He shared a story about his work for kindness and joy. In his sharing, I discovered his family and other families had no food since March 23 because of lockdown(禁闭).
For one day I was grief-stricken for them. I mean, how could I, in North Carolina, possibly do anything to help feed a man and 50 people on the other side of the world? After a sleepless night I awoke with clarity to give money to these families. It was not a lot of money, but all that I had and I was determined to find a way to get the funds to Kenya from the US. Luckily, I succeeded in the end. My friend has been able to make the money go far buying corn, oil, fruit, and vegetables to feed 20 adults and 30 children. And now they have food.
Each day presents a new problem. Many more people in other countries in Africa have reached out to me asking for help. It is heartbreaking. I cannot help everyone with money but I am determined to help everyone I can with telling their stories through our column Global Storytellers for Kindness on our website. I asked my friend for a list of the children in his family. So now I sit with a list of 30 names, ages, and school years, wondering what on earth we can do for these children. Each night I sleep with a question and hope my dreams will give me guidance during my awake time.
Each day is filled with problems and difficulties I could never have imagined, and also thoughts, actions, and ideas that are blossoming to extend love and mercy between many humans.

29、 San Francisco has decided that its city government workers can't use computer programs that recognize faces. It is the first US city to take such a strong step to keep this technology under control.
When a computer system identifies a person from their face in a picture,it's called “facial recognition". Many police departments use facial recognition. It can be helpful when police just have a picture of a suspect(嫌疑犯). but no other information. Normally, even with facial recognition, police must have other proof showing that a person is guilty.
But many people say facial recognition programs aren't good enough yet. The programs can usually recognize white men. But they're not so good at identifying women and people with darker skin. They worry that "false matches"-when the computer thinks it has identified a person, but it's wrong-will make innocent people look like criminals.
For companies like Amazon and Microsoft, facial recognition is a big business. Amazon has worked hard to sell their facial recognition program to police departments around the US. Microsoft sells tools that allow prisons to watch people inside.
To work well, facial recognition programs must have a great number of pictures of people. But most people whose pictures are in the systems never gave permission(许可)for their pictures to be used.
Many people worry that using computers to identify or track people will decrease freedom. Now,in many places, facial recognition is used to keep people under control and much of public life is watched on security cameras. Similarly, many cities in America and Europe are also almost completely covered by security cameras. Police officers now often wear cameras on their bodies, recording all the time. It's usually not clear when governments are using facial recognition and how they are using it.
Facial recognition is already being used at airports throughout Europe and in the US. The Department of Homeland Security expects to have pictures of 97%of the people flying out of the country in the next four years.
As these powerful computer programs become more common, San Francisco's move to control facial recognition is an unusual and strong move to limit the way governments use computers to watch and control people.
【1】Why do people worry about facial recognition programs?
A. They cannot multiply people's responsibility.
B. They cannot help police identify good people.
C. They will mistake innocent people for bad people.
D. They will identify black people instead of white people.
【2】How can facial recognition programs function effectively?
A. Companies should work with each other.
B. People should have more pictures taken.
C. They should include as many pictures as possible.
D. Police departments and prisons should be under control.
【3】What makes people feel their freedom is on the decrease?
A. There are police everywhere.
B. A lot of security cameras are used.
C. More people are forced to stay at home.
D. Governments focus more on facial recognition.
【4】What's San Francisco's attitude towards government workers using facial recognition?
