二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、We all like fantasy stories, and grow up reading and listening to fantasies. These tales fuel our imaginations, and satisfy our longings for adventures. The most interesting thing about fantasies is that their plots involve magical beasts and heroes, animal creatures talking like humans, and other things we can’t see in real life. Also, fantasies have a distinguished writing style, with freedom of expression.

    Toy Fantasy

In toy fantasy stories, narrators(叙述者)bring their beloved toys to life that can live, talk, think, breathe and behave like human beings. You would see modern toy fantasies in a picture book format. Representative works are A. A. Milne’s Winnie the Pooh and Carlo Collodi’s The Adventures of Pinocchio.

    Animal Fantasy

The animal fantasy tells tales about animals behaving like human beings, experiencing emotions, and having the ability to talk. However, animals in fantasies hold their various animal characteristics, too. Examples include The Wind in the Willows by Kenneth Grahame, Charlotte's Web by E. B. White, and The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter which influences children around the world.

    Magical Fantasy

In a magical fantasy, you see a character having magical powers, or a strange magical object becomes the subject of the story. Stories of this type began widely spreading long ago, including Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and William Steig’s Sylvester and the Magic Pebble.

    Modern Folktales

Modern folktales are types of fantasy that narrators tell in a traditional tale accompanying some typical parts, such as strong conflict, little description of characters, and sometimes magical elements. These tales come before all others and are popular, as authors throughout history, have written them. Hans Christian Andersen has written several tales of this category including The Nightingale, The Emperor’s New Clothes and Thumbelina.

【1】What is the common feature of the fantasies?

    A.Their characters are highly popular.

B.Their events occur in the unreal world.

【2】Who made a great contribution to the animal fantasy?

    A.Carlo Collodi.

    D.Hans Christian Andersen.

【3】Which type of fantasy has the longest history?

    A.The toy fantasy.

    B.The animal fantasy.

    C.The magical fantasy.

  • 27、High school biology teacher Kelly Chavis knew smartphones were a problem in her class. But not even the students realized how much of a problem the devices were until Chavis did an in-class experiment.

For one class period, students used a whiteboard to count every Snapchat, Instagram, text, call that appeared on their phones. Chavis is among a growing number of teachers, parents and health experts who believe that smartphones are now partly to blame for increasing the levels of student anxiety. “One girl, just during the one hour, got close to 150 Snapchat notifications. 150!” she said.

Jean Twenge, a psychology professor at San Diego State University in California, said it is not a coincidence that youth mental health issues have risen with the number of phones. “This use of phones has led to a loss of sleep and face-to-face interactions necessary for their growth,” she said.

Researchers are still not sure whether phones cause student depression or depression causes phone use. But nearly 60 percent of parents said they worry about the influence of social media on their child’s physical and mental health.

Both schools and parents are starting to take steps to deal with the problem. Many public schools pay outside companies to watch students’ social media activity for signs of anxiety. Other schools invite in yoga teachers and comfort dogs to help calm students.

【1】What’s the purpose of Chavis’s experiment?

A.To see how many students have smartphones.

B.To find out how popular her students are.

C.To show smartphones influence teenagers greatly.

D.To tell her students how to use smartphones wisely.

【2】How did Kelly Chavis feel about the result?

    A.Shocked.

    B.Excited.

    C.Satisfied.

    D.Frightened.

【3】Which of the following is true according to Jean Twenge?

A.Students are now under great stress.

B.Students spend too much money on smartphones.

C.Over-using phones cause drops in students’ grades.

D.Over-using phones may harm students’ body and mind.

【4】What might be talked about if the passage is continued?

A.How other schools deal with students’ phones.

B.Whether the ways to handle phones are effective.

C.How some parents deal with their children’s phones.

D.Whether students are willing to give up using phones.

  • 28、   NextFest is an unusual exhibition where you can meet the most creative minds and discover new technology from around the world and see the things that will change the way we live, work and play in the future. For example,......

Brainball is a computer game with a difference: if you’re too competitive, you'll lose. The more relaxed you are, the better you play. I’m sure it will be a popular game with yoga teachers and nervous parents everywhere.

If you’re interested in fashion, NexlFest can show you the clothes of the future—cloth which you can change by downloading styles from the web, clothes which look after your health and a biometric(生物测量的) suit which watches over your body and gives you medicine when you need it.

Another hit is a humanoid(类人的) robot which can walk, turn, climb up and down stairs—and even dance. Asimo copies human movement and is friendly-looking. Its maker, Honda, believes it will be a big help to blind or elderly people and to those who can’t get out of bed.

The Skyear looks as if it could only appear in a Hollywood film. It certainly lives up to its name: it can fly. It can climb at more than 2.000 metres a minute and reach a speed of 365 mph. If you want one, it will cost you about $500,000!

If you want to see the future, come to NexiFest. It’s open all this whole week at the State Science Exhibition Centre.

Why You Should Never Cross Your Legs

Crossing your legs is an extremely common habit; most people don’t even notice that they’re doing it when they sit down. While you may find it comfortable to sit with one knee crossed over the other, it might be causing health problems that you are not aware of.

A study published in Blood Pressure Monitoring stated that sitting with your legs crossed can increase your blood pressure. The reason this happens is because the blood in your legs has to work against gravity to be pumped back to your heart, crossing one leg over the other increases resistance, making it even harder for the blood to circulate(循环). This causes your body to increase your blood pressure to push the blood back to the heart.

Crossing your legs can also lead to neck and back pain. Ideally, it's best for our bodies to sit with our feet planted flat, hip width apart, on the floor, but it's not easy to maintain perfect posture all day at the office. When you sit with your legs crossed your hips are in a twisted position, which can cause one of your pelvic (骨盆的) bones to move. Since your pelvic bone supports your back and neck: this can cause pressure on your lower and middle back and neck.

Leg crossing has long been linked to manners. In some countries and cultures leg crossing is looked on as casual, disrespectful, and altogether lower class. For the same reasons, many religions frown upon leg crossing in church. And what's good for the soul should be good for the feet as well. But respect aside, your health is affected in the long run if you are accustomed to crossing legs although you might not feel its immediate effects. The problem is really caused by siting in the first place. Don't make yourself comfortable--- get up and get moving.
