二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Jane Goodall is best known for her 26-year study of the chimps in the wild. There, she made several revolutionary discoveries that made her one of the greatest field scientists of the 20th century.

Born in London in 1934, the expectations for Jane were standard for the time: a marriage to a nice man, followed by a few children. Fortunately, her mother never discouraged (劝阻, 使气馁) her interests: animals and the natural world. Once her mother discovered that little Jane had brought a handful of worms (幼虫) to bed; rather than screaming, she explained that her new little friends needed the soil to live, and together, they took them back to the garden.

Jane was a bookworm who admired Doctor Dolittle and loved the Tarzan novels. Reading did its usual quiet but life-changing thing: Jane developed a dream to go to Africa and live among the wild animals.

Jane realized her dream on July 14, 1960 when she arrived at Gombe Stream Game Reserve to study the chimps. However, for two months, the chimps escaped when they heard her coming. The only thing she saw was the back of a chimprunning away from her.

“The more I thought of the task I had set myself, the more discouraged I became,” Jane wrote in her first book, In the Shadow of Man.

Eventually, she became familiar with a male chimp and his big family. She observed them kiss, hug, pat each other on the back, shake their fingers at each other. She watched them act very human-like.

One day, moving quietly through the jungle, Jane saw the male chimp sit beside a large termite mound (白蚁土堆). He kept taking small braches from trees and putting them in the holes to fish the ants.

In any case, Jane’s discovery became the talk of the scientific world. Harvard’s Stephen Jay Gould observed, “We must now re-think what the words ‘tool’ (工具) and ‘man’ mean or accept chimps as humans.”

1What did Jane’s mother do when she found the worms on the bed?

    A. She studied them carefully. B. She shouted at her daughter.

    C. She threw them into the garden. D. She explained they liked the soil.

2Which is the major reason that made Jane dream to work in the wild?

    A. Doctor Dolittle’s invitation. B. Her interest in chimps.

    C. The reading in her childhood. D. Her mother’s encouragement.

3How did Jane feel during the first two months in Africa?

    A. Lonely. B. Frightened.

    C. Hopeless. D. Content.

4What did Stephen Jay Gould’s words imply?

    A. Chimps should be accepted as humans.

    B. Jane’s discovery is of great importance.

    C. Only human beings know how to make use of tools.

    D. The scientists should confirm the meaning of the words.

  • 27、   [1] In 1856, a British survey team measured the height of Qomolangma with the result of 8,840 meters above sea level. However, the exact measurement has never been settled. In 1955, the figure was adjusted by an Indian survey team to 8,848 meters, and later to 8,850 meters according to a US team in 1999. And in 2005, a Chinese team gained a height of 8,844 meters, but that result wasn't widely accepted either.

[2] On May 6, 2020, a 30-member Chinese survey team, equipped with the latest technology, including a Global Navigation Satellite System receiver and a radar to measure the mountain's snow cap, is determined to settle the dispute (争议).

[3] But measuring Qomolangma is no easy task. The average air temperature there is -29 and hurricane-like winds blow all the time. According to Li Guopeng, leader of the No.1 Geodetic Survey Team of China's Ministry of Natural Resources, despite advanced technologies we now have — the likes of robots and drones — it’s uncertain that they can operate smoothly under extreme conditions, which is why sending human experts to the peak is still necessary to ensure a precise reading.

    [4] But ______

[5] The truth is that measuring the height of Qomolangma is much more than just getting that one particular number. Mount Qomolangma is the perfect window for observing crustal (地壳的) movements. Tiny changes to the peak's height can indicate whether the two plates, the Eurasian plate and the Indian plate, are heading toward or away from each other. The survey team will also get firsthand information about the condition of the snow and other natural materials at the top, which could be an indicator of climate change on the Tibet-Qinghai Plateau.

[6] It might be true that settling a dispute was the driving force for continued exploration, but the good thing is that we always end up discovering so much more.

1What is Paragraph 1 mainly about?

A.The importance of Qomolangma. B.The dispute of Qomolangma’s height.

C.The difficulty in measuring Qomolangma. D.The change of Qomolangma’s height.

2What does Li Guopeng think of the new devices they carried?

A.They can read and deal with the results precisely.

B.They might break down under unusual conditions.

C.They are the latest advanced technology in the world.

D.They will work properly without human’s instructions.

3Which of the following is best for the blank in the text?

A.what is the process of China’s measurement?

B.how is the latest technology used for the research?

C.does a tiny difference really matter for a huge mountain?

D.do extreme conditions actually affect the measurement?

4What is to be discovered through the exact height of Qomolangma?

A.The depth of snowcap. B.The diversity of natural materials.

C.The state of crustal movements. D.The change of worldwide climate.

5What is the writer’s purpose in writing the text?

A.To recommend a good way to settle a dispute.

B.To show the history of measuring Qomolangma.

C.To advertise China’s latest advanced technology.

D.To stress the value of China’s latest exploration in Qomolangma.

  • 28、   Wolves travel shorter distances and move slower during snowfall events, according to new research by University of Alberta biologists. The effects were most pronounced at night, when wolves hunt, and behaviour returned to normal within a day. Wolf tracks across snow in northeastern Alberta.

“Our findings suggest that there is something about actively falling snow that causes wolves to slow down,” said Amanda Droghini, a former MSc student in the Department of Biological Science and lead author on the study. “We don’t know the exact mechanism behind that. It’s unlikely that they were staying still because they were feasting on a recent kill. Instead, active precipitation(降雪量)might affect wolves’ hunting abilities. Like rain, snow clears the air column of scent molecules. So, maybe falling snow makes it harder for wolves to detect the smell of prey.”

Over the course of two winters, the researchers used remote cameras to disclose snowfall events and estimate snow depth. To study wolf movement, they collected telemetry(测距仪) data from 17 wolves to calculate travel speed and duration, as well as resting periods. It is the first study to examine how large flesh-eating animals respond to snowfall events.

With the effects of climate change on precipitation in the north forest region uncertain, it is difficult to predict the implications for wolf populations. Studies such as these increase our understanding of how large mammals react to normal snowfall events, but the type and amount of winter precipitation will likely have an impact on animal behavior and the energetic cost of movement.

“Winter is already challenging for many wildlife species because moving through snow requires more energy. Snow can also make it harder for animals to access food resources,” said Droghini, who conducted the research under the supervision of Professor Stan Boutin, Alberta Biodiversity Conservation Chair.

“Anything that increases those costs, such as increased rain-on-snow events, could lead to lacking in nutrition, poor body condition, and even starvation as animals are unable to make up for those additional costs. That is one of the worst-case scenarios(设想)but, in truth, we know very little about potential changes to precipitation patterns and how wildlife will respond to those changes.”

1Which one is the closest to the underlined word “disclose” in paragraph 3?

    A. identify B. overlook

    C. overcome D. disturb

2Increased precipitation might have the following effects on animals except _______.

    A. poor health B. nutritional shortage

    C. hunting ability D. losing appetite(食欲)

3It can be inferred from the passage that _______.

    A. researchers find it difficult to predict the implications for wolves

    B. researchers have found the mechanism behind the phenomenon

    C. researchers have collected data by using modern technologies

    D. researchers will most probably go on studying the phenomenon

4Where can we probably find this article?

    A. tourist leaflets. B. sports newspapers.

    C. science magazines. D. advertising posters.

    MEMORANDUM (备忘录)

To: All members of the sales department

    From: Annette Derringer

    Re: Year-end party

    Date: November 26

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is just a quick note to let you all know the arrangements for next month’s year-end party. As you know, the party will be held at the Green Vale Country Club, which we have reserved between 7:30 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. on the evening of December 21st. I’ve received replies from almost all of you confirming attendance, but if you haven’t let me know yet, please do so in the next day or two. Tickets for all employees have been covered by the company.

The Green Vale manager has asked me to explain one or two things to those of you who have not been there before. Basically, there is sufficient parking space for only 100 vehicles, so they would like to ask those of you planning to drive, try to car-pool as much as possible. Also, the number of lockers available is small, so guests should try to keep belongings to a minimum.

    Thanks in advance.

    Annette

    Annette,

This is to let you know that I will be able to attend the year-end party at the Green Vale Country Club on the 21st although I don’t think I will be able to arrive before 8:30. I was wondering if it would also be possible to bring a couple of guests. I know it is a bit of a last minute request, but my brother and his wife are planning to visit us at that time, and I know they’d love to see the Green Vale. If it is not a problem, then can you let me know how much I should pay for their tickets? Also, assuming this is OK, I was planning to drive down in a single car, to reduce the need for parking and also to allow us to keep our belongings in the car.

I have a couple of days off before the party, but I’ll be in my office until the 17th, so could you get back to me before then? Thanks a lot,

    Kyle

D.To thank people for attending the party.

2Why does Kyle Berwick write to Annette Derringer? Because he wants to ________.

A.ask the price of movie tickets B.explain why he cannot come to the party

C.request directions to a hotel D.ask if he may bring guests to the party

3What can we infer from the passage?

B.Annette takes charge of the arrangement of year-end party.

C.They can take as many belongings as they can with them when going to the Green Vale.

D.Kyle Berwick won’t bring the guests to go to the party if he has to pay the tickets.

四、短文填空 (共1题,共 5分)
  • 31、Directions: Complete the following passage by using the words in the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need.

The view that the spirit of adventure no longer has any scope for its enterprise seems, at first glance, depressingly true. The highest mountains have been scaled; the deepest seas plumbed. Maps today no longer contain huge blanks marked "Unknown Territory", nor do they make random guesses at the shapes of 1 land-masses. All major journeys of exploration to 2 the true shape and nature of the globe have been made in the past. It was left to us to fill in the details with 3 which once would have been considered impossible. The gaps have been 4. What next?

The obvious answer, of course, is that man is now looking upwards into space. Discoveries are being made at such a tremendous rate that even authors of science-fiction are finding it difficult to keep up with them and have to tax their imagination to invent bigger and better space-craft. Satellites sending signals as they swing round our globe have become 5.

Astronauts have successfully landed on the moon and its entire surface has been photographed. The information that satellites may provide fueling stations for manned rockets no longer strikes us as preposterous. If thirty years ago, a scientist has urged that we send messages into outer space in the hope of receiving an answer, he would have been regarded as either irresponsible or mad. Now, anything seems 6.

From dreams like these, we return to earth with a bump. Trips into space are all very well, but they are not for us; we must 7 ourselves with our own, much-traveled world. The earth itself is the training-ground for adventurous spirits, for "adventure" need not mean the seeking out of something new. A person can be called adventurous when he finds out something for himself, and it does not matter how many times the discovery has been made before. No one would say that men who set out now to cross the forbidding Antarctic are less enterprising than their predecessors who tried to do the same thing. The little boy who climbs the small hill that 8 his town, or even he who tries to climbs and fails, has precisely the same spirit that led Hillary to climb Everest. For the bold spirit and inquiring mind, there are inexhaustible possibilities. So long as there are people willing to 9 places that are well-known, there will be those who will, one day, set foot on remote and 10 shores.
