二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Breathing is something you do all day long, without even thinking about it. However, you might be doing it wrong. Research shows that the way you breathe affects the amount of oxygen you take in, as well as how you think and feel.

So which is it? Do you breathe through your nose or your mouth? Some health experts recommend people breathe in through their nose and out through their mouth. Others say that people should just focus on breathing easily, paying no attention to their mouth or nose preference. But mouth breathing has also been connected with bad breath, snoring (打呼噜), high blood pressure and bad teeth.

Nose breathing may affect how memories are stabilized (稳定) in our brains, according to Swedish researchers. During the study, participants smelled 12 different smells and then were asked to breathe either through their nose or mouth for an hour afterwards. Then, they were presented with the original set of smells and a new set. Those who smelled with their nose remembered the smells better.

A research team recognized the differences in brain activity that occurred when seven epilepsy (癫痫) patients breathed through their nose or through their mouth. The team found three areas of the brain where activity is connected with breathing. These areas showed more changes in brain activity only when volunteers breathed in through their nose.

So, should mouth breathers change their breathing habits? If you’ re happy with the way you breathe and you aren’t experiencing any health problems, be yourself and just keep your own way. But if you think it might be time for a change, focus breathing through your nose until it becomes a habit. It might help you survive an emergency.

1What does the word “it” underlined in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A.Your life style. B.How you breathe.

C.How you think and feel. D.The oxygen you take in.

    2What did Swedish researchers find?

    A.Nose breathing may improve memory.

    B.Mouth breathing causes health problems.

C.Nose breathers are not sensitive to smells.

D.Mouth breathers have a good sense of taste.

3What is the effect of nose breathing according to the research?

A.It helps one to stay healthy. B.It cures bad breath and snoring.

C.It makes one’s brain more active. D.It improves one’s sense of smell.

4What does the author think of nose breathing?

A.It, s hard to get used to. B.It’s suitable for everybody.

C.It’s what people have to do. D. It’s what people can benefit from.

  • 27、   Istman Simon’s factory in western Hungary produces more than one million plastic parts every day. But on a busy morning in one of its large production areas, there is only the sound of machines.Workers have all but disappeared.

“We can see human workers being replaced with AI machines. It has already led to job losses,” said Zoltan Laszlo, a Hungarian workers’ leader.

Hungary’s economy grew nearly 5 percent last year. Yet the industry lost nearly 23,000 jobs, ending six straight years of employment growth. In the Czech Republic, employment numbers showed a year-on-year loss of almost a thousand jobs between July and September of last year. This suggests employment could have decreased for the first time since 2013 over the full year in Eastern Europe.

“Workers are becoming more expensive. This is the necessary way to get returns,” said Peter Simon, a manager of Simon Plastics, which is hoping to expand production. But pressured (挤压) by increasing human costs and falling product prices, the plastic industry spent over $3 billion on AI machines last year, he added.

“Employment numbers are one sign that Eastern Europe’s industry may be at a turning point,” said David Marek, an economist with Deloitte. “The average (平均的) yearly increase in human costs in the Czech Republic, Poland and Hungary is around 10 percent. That is far higher than in many western countries. Factory owners find themselves with little choice but to buy machinery if they want to remain competitive.”

Josef Stredula is the head of the Czech-Moravian Trade Unions. He notes that up to 10 percent of jobs could disappear in the next five years.

“Big changes are awaiting us,” Stredula said. He added that although AI machines might free people from heavy or boring physical work, it was important to ease the change, for example, by retraining affected workers. “We have to do everything to make the future easier for everyone,” he said.

1What are the first three paragraphs mainly about?

    A.The problems with Hungary’s economy.

B.A factory with advanced AI technology.

C.The worries of a Hungarian workers’ leader.

D.The increasing job losses in Eastern Europe.

2What does Peter Simon really want to say?

A.He is worried about the falling product prices.

B.Simon Plastics’ products are very competitive.

C.The workers are too expensive in western Hungary.

D.The plastic industry has to use more AI machines.

3What is Josef Stredula’s main attitude to the AI machines?

    A.Doubtful. B.Uncaring. C.Concerned. D.Unsupportive.

4What is the best title for the text?

A.AI Machines Are Pushing Workers Out of Their Jobs in Eastern Europe

B.Rising Workers’ Payments Lead to Big Job Losses in Eastern Europe

C.Eastern European Factories Have Found Ways to Cut Production Costs

D.Eastern European Workers Are Freed From Heavy and Boring Works

  • 28、   Born in Oak Park, Illinois, on January 17, 1922, Betty White was the only child of Horace and Tess White. Indeed, while most young kids were begging their parents for pets, White said she was the lucky little girl whose parents went for a walk and would come home with a dog or a cat.

The personal passion for animals has often mixed with her professional work. She created, produced and hosted a 1971 animal show called the Pet Set, which featured both wild animals and her friends’ own pets. She also wrote the 2011 book Betty & Friends: My Life at the Zoo and even lent her voice to the animated series (动画系列) of Pound Puppies.

“I’m the luckiest person in the world—my life is divided in absolute half: half animals, half show business,” she said.

She started working with the Los Angeles Zoo in the 1960s. “My interest in zoos started early on, because my mom and dad went to the zoo often, not just to please their little girl, but because they enjoyed the experience,” she wrote in her book. She worked with the Los Angeles Zoo because she was kind of shocked that Los Angeles had such a poor zoo inside. She said, “I’ve never been one to stand outside and criticize (批评). I’d rather get inside and see what’s going on, see how I can help.”

“Zoos don’t only exhibit animals; they do a lot of wonderful protection work,” she said. “Many people have a closed mind on zoos. They think no animal should be kept in zoos. Instead, they should all be in the wild in their own habitat. Well, of course, that is a myth.”

1White said she was lucky because __________.

A.she could often read books on animals

B.her parents often kept pets at home

C.her parents often took a walk together with her

D.she lent her voice to the animated series of Pound Puppies

B.White started working in a zoo several years ago.

C.Betty & Friends: My Life at the Zoo was written in 1971.

D.White’s interest in zoos was developed under the influence of her parents.

3What did White do after seeing the Los Angeles Zoo?

A.She just stood outside to criticize.

B.She got inside and saw the animals.

C.She decided never to visit the zoo again.

D.She worked with the zoo and did something to help.

4What is White’s attitude towards zoo?

    A.Supportive. B.Indifferent (漠不关心的).

    C.Hopeless. D.Disapproving.

  • 29、Most Helpful Apps for Students

There's almost an app for everything nowadays, and this can make student life easier, cheaper, safer and more fun. Whether you want help with taking notes, revising, waking up on time or keeping fit, read on for our student app picks.

    Lecture recording apps

Just a few years ago, students attending lectures would have to spend the entire time writing wildly on notepads, in order not to miss any vital bit of information. Then along came technology, and now, lecture recording apps are a reality.

Sound Note is a popular lecture recording app for iPad users. You can store an entire lecture in both visual and audio form. Other good quality lecture recording apps include Notes Plus and Audio Memos Free—The Voice Recorder.

    Student planner apps

Organization is key for success and well-being at university, and student planner apps are becoming increasingly popular. As well as saving on paper, many student planner apps also send reminders and warnings straight to your phone or device. Popular student planner apps include Timetable, My Class Schedule and Class Timetable.

    Student safety apps

A number of apps for students have been developed promoting personal safety if out alone at night. The Circle of Six app is particularly useful for locating lost friends on nights out and also allows users to send their circle of six friends an instant call for help at the touch of a button. The GPS tracker will mark your location on your friends" devices, ensuring you'll always be able to find one another if necessary. Other student apps that promote safety include bSafe and React Mobile.

    Healthy eating apps

If you're interested in eating healthily while keeping to a student budget, consider downloading a few healthy eating apps. Examples I've come across which are perfect apps for students include Rockin Ramen, a student app featuring a number of nutritious recipes with Ramen as a main ingredient, and MealBoard, an app which plans healthy meals, grocery shops and recipes based on what you've got in the fridge.
