二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、   Liana nervously bit her nails while she waited for the exam to arrive. She looked around the room; hundreds of other law students sat in rows staring anxiously at the tables in front of them. Just as she began to take a deep breath to calm her anxiety, an exam booklet(册子) was placed in front of her. This was the moment she had been expecting ever since she began law school three years ago. She picked up her pencil, and opened to the first page of the bar exam, a test for all students wanting to become licensed lawyers.

Liana never thought she would want to become a lawyer. Her parents were both artists. Law was something she had not been exposed to as a child. But art made for a tumultuous career—both of her parents had struggled to find jobs and worked round the clock when they were young. Even though they finally seemed successful and happy, Liana wanted something different.

She was the anchor on her high school debate team, and consistently impressed her competitors with her analytical thinking. “Never argue with Ms. Lakes,” her teachers would say. So she chose to major in law. In her mind, she pictured herself in a New York City courtroom(法庭) dressed in an expensive suit, with papers in her hand, waving at the jury(陪审团) in a speech on human rights.

But now, with the bar exam sitting in front of her, she started to worry. “What if I don’t pass? Did I study enough?” Her thoughts raced through her mind. On the first page were seven paragraphs detailing a law situation followed by a series of questions. Liana read through the paragraphs, and quickly scribbled down an explanation of the first question before moving onto the next question. The next few hours went like this as the clock ticked closer and closer to the lunch hour.

At 12:00 p.m. sharp, a buzzer(蜂鸣器) sounded and everyone was told to put down their pencils and walked out for an hour-long lunch break. At lunch, Liana met her friend, Kevin.

“How did it go?” she asked. “To be honest, I’ve no idea. I just kept writing.” Kevin said. Liana laughed and said she felt the same way.

After lunch, the two exchanged words of encouragement. They strolled back into the exam center a bit more refreshed. Liana finished the second half of the exam that day with a better feeling than what she started with in the morning.

1What do we know about the bar exam Liana is taking?

A.It is for someone to be a qualified lawyer.

B.It has many law situations to describe.

C.It lasts for hours without stopping.

D.It takes place every three years.

2A tumultuous career” in Paragraph 2 probably is a career that ________.

A.has lots of chances of success

B.needs to work in different cities

C.is full of competition and hard work

    D.demands much professional knowledge

3Liana wanted to be a lawyer because ________.

A.she was good at arguing and debating

B.she wanted to follow her friend’s advice

C.she believed it would bring her a rich and happy life

D.she aimed to devote herself to protecting human rights

4At the end of the exam, Liana felt more ________.

    A.nervous B.curious

    C.energetic D.confident

5Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A.The Wild Dream B.A True Lawyer

C.The Big Test D.A Hard Choice

  • 27、   Coronaviruses(冠状病毒) are a large group of viruses. They consist of a core of genetic material(遗传物质) surrounded by an envelope with protein spikes(蛋白棘突). This gives it the appearance of a crown. Crown in Latin is called “corona” and that’s how these viruses get their name. In this text, we’ll take a quick look at what’s currently known about the virus.

    Covid-2019

The 2019 Novel Coronavirus, first reported December in Wuhan, central China’s Hubei Province, has quickly spread across the country and around the world. It initially occurred in a group of people with pneumonia(肺炎) who’d been associated with a seafood and live animal market in the city of Wuhan.

Intermediate hosts: The Covid-2019 may originate in bats, a team led by renowned Chinese virologist Shi Zhengli said earlier, while the intermediary host remains unknown.

    Incubation period(潜伏期): usually 1-14 days.

Infection: Virus may spread before symptoms show.

    SARS-CoV

The Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) coronavirus was first identified in China in 2003 .

Intermediate hosts: Bats are the original host. Civet cats serve as an important intermediary that carries virus from the winged mammal to humans.

    Incubation period: 2-7 days.

Infection: Virus spread after symptoms show.

    MERS-CoV

The Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS中东呼吸综合征) coronavirus was first identified in Saudi Arabia in 2012.

Intermediate hosts: MERS-CoV was travelled from dromedary camel to humans.

    Incubation period: 2-14 days.

Infection: Virus may spread before symptoms show.

C.Mers-Cov were first identified in China.

D.SARS-Cov has a longer incubation period than Mers-cov.

  • 28、   Nao, the first robot able to show feelings, has been created by a European research team. When Nao is sad, he lowers his head and looks down. When he’s happy, he raises his arms for a hug. Nothing is out of the ordinary, except that Nao is a robot.

“We’re modeling the first years of life,” says Lola Canamero, a computer scientist at the University of Hertforshire. “The feelings are shown through physical gestures and body movements rather than facial or verbal (言语的) expressions.”

In the future, says the scientist, robots are likely to act as companions, provide support for old people, and help people shop online. In such uses, the display of feeling will be important in making the interactions (交往) more natural and comfortable.

Nao has been programmed to copy the emotional skills of a one-year-old child. It can memorize faces, and knows the basic rules of good and bad. Based on these it can decide how to react to what is going on. The actions going with each feeling are pre-programmed, but Nao decides for itself when to display them.

Nao is also programmed to have different personalities. A more independent robot is less likely to call for help when exploring a room, while a more fearful robot will show distress if it finds something in the room that may be harmful.

Canamero’s team will take its emotional programming forward into medical applications. Part of the project will look at ways to use robots in hospitals to support the roles of doctors, nurses and parents. Children might find that a small, friendly-looking robot that can understand their emotional states makes them less anxious. “We want to explore different roles—the robots will help the children to understand their treatment and explain what they have to do. We want to help the children to control their anxiety.” she says.

    1According to the text Nao_______.

A.displays different feelings in different situations

B.is able to copy adult emotional displays

    C.can remember people’s feelings

    D.learns feelings from facial expressions

2What can we learn from the text?

A.Scientists worked on facial and spoken expressions to create Nao’s emotions.

B.The time when Nao displays feelings has been pre-programmed.

C.Emotional programming is used in medicine production.

D.Robots with emotional skills can help children feel more comfortable.

3What can’t robots do in the future according to the scientist?

A.They can work as your companion.

B.They can aid old people .

    C.They can shop with you.

    D.They can show their feelings.

4What is the text mainly about?

A.The relationship between humans and robots.

B.The roles that robots play in different fields.

C.The first robot able to show feelings.

    D.The long history of robots.

Scientists have proved what students have long suspected: Maths equations can actually trigger physical pain.

Regions of the brain linked with the experience of physical 1 were activated in those fearful of maths when they were presented with a tough equation, researchers have found. The higher a person’s anxiety of a maths task, the more it 2 activity in regions of their brain associated with visceral (内脏的) threat detection, and often the experience of pain itself.

However, the researchers say their study examines the pain response associated with anticipating an anxiety-provoking event, rather than the pain associated with a 3 event itself. A maths task itself is not painful but 4 the thought of it is highly unpleasant to certain people.

“Maths can be difficult, and for those with high levels of mathematics-anxiety (HMAs), math is associated with tension, apprehension (忧虑) and fear,” the researchers said in their paper titled. When Math Hurts. “5, this relation was not seen during math performance, 6 that it is not that math itself hurts, rather, the anticipation of math is painful. These results may also provide a potential neural mechanism to explain why (people with) HMAs tend to 7 math and math-related situations, which in turn can bias (使有偏见) (those with) high levels of mathematics-anxiety away from taking math classes or even entire math-related 8 paths. We provide the first neural 9 indicating the nature of the subjective experience of math-anxiety.

Other forms of psychological stress, such as social 10 or a traumatic break-up, can also elicit feeling of physical pain.”
