  • 26、What do ten dollars, a garden, and Elon-Musk’s brother have in common? They’re used to fight against food insecurity and build the world’s only biggest gardener community. Launched on the autumn equinox(秋分), the Million Gardens Movement (MGM)is a charitable and educational plan that hopes to put a garden in every family

Kimbal Musk, Elon Musk’s brother and the Executive Director of the non-profit Big Green, hoped that the MGM puts Little Green Garden units in homes and classrooms for just $10. He explains that each garden has its special growing plan and online lessons and activities to support the growth of culture-related vegetable gardens at home.

The MGM platform is simple as a whole. If you’re a gardener, sign up to join the community. Donate$10 to a family that can’t afford a garden, or that lives in a food desert, read and contribute to the blog and then tell other gardeners about it.

“Ten years ago, I co-founded Big Green focusing on under-resourced communities to increase access to fresh food,” says Musk. “Today it’s a national non-profit organization working with schools in several major cities with almost 640 outdoor leaning garden classrooms. The Million Gardens Movement is put forward to make it simple for anyone to give a family a garden. Planting a seed is an act of hope for a brighter tomorrow. We hope millions of people will join us to grow their own gardens and give a garden to a family.”

They’ve been able to deliver garden kits to Denver, Detroit, Memphis and Indianapolis so far. “We hope to expand to Canada this year with sights on Vancouver and Toronto,” adds Musk. “We also hope to expand to Mexico and beyond to make this a worldwide movement to encourage millions of people to grow their own food.”

D.How you can help on the MGM platform.

【3】What may the MGM do next?

    A.Encourage people to donate more.

B.Persuade people to eat healthy food.

C.Expand the movement to other countries.

【4】For what purpose does the author write the text?

    A.To advocate a green life.

B.To raise money for a movement.

    C.To introduce a newly-launched project.

D.To stress the importance of food security.

  • 27、   It’s not easy to step out of your comfort zone. In fact, it’s scary. But at the same time, you’ll experience and learn amazing things. So you need to step out of your comfort zone and experience new cultures abroad. 1 You’re exposed to different languages, smells, colors, sights, sounds, and people. If you’re not convinced yet, read on.

It’s a big world out there. 2 When you live in another country, you can open your eyes to the beliefs and values of other people. You will discover new social norms (规范) and lifestyles. It will not only change your perspective(观点), but it will reshape your personality as well.

3 Who doesn’t want to have a second language under their belt? Learning a second language will give you the ability to step inside the mind of a culture and see things from a whole new perspective. It’ll also give you an advantage in the job market. Being in a foreign country helps you learn a new language much faster.

Don’t you want to greatly improve your development as a person? Traveling to a different country and experiencing a new culture allows that. Exposure to multi-cultures or diversity will lead to a better judgment. 4 You will also learn fun skills such as cooking among others.

5 This is the most fun part of traveling. You meet people with different backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. You will learn valuable lessons and hear stories from each person you meet, which will make the trip even more memorable.

    A.People live and behave differently.

B.You can also learn a new language.

C.There is a scientific reason for traveling abroad.

D.Doing that is like stepping into whole new worlds.

E.Going abroad allows you to make friends from all over the world.

F.You can learn to become more social, open-minded, and independent.

G.You may find it hard to communicate with others when you’re abroad.

  • 28、   Is there any evidence that the standard of English as a foreign language has improved in the years since the Second World War? Naturally, as it is the world language, more and mere people are taught it and use it. But do they speak it or write it or understand it better than their patents’ or grandparents’ generations?

Have standards declined? There is no objective way of answering this question. Tests of the traditional sort — compositions, precis writing, and so on — have always been subjective, so they cannot be used to judge whether people have got better or not over the years. But so-called objective tests are useless as a measure of progress too. They have not been used consistently (一贯的) in the same “concentration” over the period they have been in use, so there is no way of comparing exams “now” and “then”. Moreover, usually in the form of multiple choice questions, they do not, by and large, test the things that really count in mastering a language.  Even comprehension is a partly “creative” activity in real life, as we have to think of possible meanings for ourselves rather than have them suggested for us from outside. And people can be trained in the techniques of multiple choice, while others fail the tests because they have been led astray (离开正道) precisely by their “suggestive” nature, so they are not really objective at all. We are left with only personal impression to go on.

My own is that, if anything, standards have declined somewhat in the last thirty or forty years, despite all the new theories, tools and techniques that have been developed. I am not alone in this judgment. In Sweden, for instance, Professors Johannes Hedberg and Gustav Korlen, two of the most experienced workers in the field; have on several occasions drawn attention to the lack of progress in the teaching of foreign languages since the late fifties. Yet Sweden is a sophisticated (先进的) society with extremely high educational and academic standards, and very concerned not to be cut off from the rest of the world. If such a country cannot achieve advances in the study of foreign languages, it is unlikely that many, if any, others have done so.

Japan is another community where remarkably little progress has been made in the learning of English. It is probably as important for Japan as for Sweden to master that language, and there is much academic effort put into linguistic (语言学的) research of various kinds. Yet the average standard of language learning is abysmally low, particularly for such a highly literate and educated society. This is no doubt in part the result of a vicious circle (恶性循环): many of the professors of English at Japanese universities are themselves incapable of speaking or writing or even understanding the language well.

1Which of the following is TRUE according to the author?

A.Multiple choice questions are objective because people cannot be trained any techniques.

B.Sweden emphasizes the teaching of English without paying attention to other countries.

C.We have to depend on our own impression to judge the English standards.

D.Compositions are useful to test people’s English ability because people have to write out their viewpoints.

2The so-called objective tests cannot be used as a measure of progress because _______.

A.the people who design the tests are changing constantly

B.the tests do not always focus on the same thing

C.the way of scoring is not scientific

D.they contain too many reading comprehension questions

3The author’s attitude towards present English standards is _______.

    A.negative B.indifferent (漠不关心的)

    C.sympathetic D.positive

  • 29、Reasons to Consider Learning a Second Language

In our current society, having the ability to understand a second language is becoming increasingly valuable.1. So take a look at why this is such a valuable skill to have.

You will be more competitive in the job market.

Businesses are always looking for people who are bilingual to be translators and to communicate with non-English speaker. Bilingual employees get paid 5%-20% more than people who only speak one language.2

You can get credit for it during college.

If you study another language at a university, you will get credit (学分) toward graduating. You can startfrom the very beginning and learn a brand-new language or continue on from what you were studying in high school. Be aware, however, that college classes can move quickly and are considered to be difficult at times.3

You can study abroad in a wider range of countries.

Studying abroad is an amazing experience that everyone should take advantage of. About 79% of Americans believe that students should seize the opportunity to spend a semester in another country.4 Learning another language can help expand the number of countries you can choose from.

Learning a language is a big commitment and is not easy by any means. If you don’t have the time to learn a language in school, there are still many, way to become proficient in another language. One program to look into is Livemocha which is a free online program where you can learn a foreign language.5There are many other countries and written resources to consider as well.

    A.This is only one suggestion.

B.So only take what you can handle.

C.Many people learn a language in order to get high marks.

D.There are a wide range of countries that you can choose from.

E.You can even go for a major in a language if you get far enough along.

F.Being able to communicate in more than one language can open countless doors.

G.Having knowledge of a second language can make you stand out in the job market.
