二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、Protected areas have mixed success in protecting wildlife, according to the largest study on the effects of reserves(保护区).

A team led by researchers from the U. K. examined water bird data from 1, 506 protected areas and analyzed more than 27, 000 bird populations across the world. The authors write that their study, published in Nature, is the first robust(强有力的), global assessment of protected area influence on bird populations. The scientists found that protected areas with management of water birds and their habitats were more likely to benefit those populations.

“Our study shows that, while many protected areas are working well, many others are failing to have positive effect, ” lead author Hannah Wauchope of the University of Exeter says in a statement. Rather than focusing only on the total global area protected, we need more focus on ensuring areas are well-managed to benefit biodiversity(生物多样性) . “The study compared water bird populations before and after the establishment of protected areas and also compared trends of similar populations within and outside of protected areas. Water birds respond quickly to changes in site quality, making them a good group to look at when studying the impact of protected areas.

“In the majority of places we looked at, wildlife populations were still stable or were increasing, but they weren’t doing any better than in unprotected areas, ” Wauchope says. “That’s disappointing, but not surprising. There seems to be this disconnect between people talking about how much land is protected and whether those areas are actually doing anything positive. ”

This research comes ahead of a United Nations meeting in China to discuss biodiversity goals for the next decade. Several countries have already devoted to protecting 30 percent of the planet by 2030, yet researchers say protection alone does not necessarily ensure positive outcomes for species.

“Efforts to reach a certain area-based goal such as 30 percent by 2030--without a focus on improving the condition of existing protected areas will achieve little, ” says co-author Julia Jones from Bangor University. “When world leaders gather in China later this year to set goals for the next decade, I really hope to see a focus on effectiveness of protected areas, rather than simply how much surface area is devoted to them.”

“We are not saying protected areas don’t work, ”Wauchope concludes in the statement. “The key point is that their effects vary hugely, and the biggest thing this depends on is whether they are managed with species in mind-we can’t just expect protected areas to work without effective management. ”

【1】What is the purpose of the UK’s study?

A.To see whether bird populations have increased in protected areas.

B.To test whether water birds can adapt to new environments.

C.To record the changes of water birds worldwide.

D.To help water birds survive in hard conditions.

【2】Why are water birds chosen as the study subject?

    A.They are an endangered species

    B.They can sense environmental changes.

C.They can help change the quality of waters.

D.They can hardly be found outside protected areas.

【3】What fact makes Wauchope feel disappointed?

A.Protected areas are not attractive to water birds.

B.There is a decline in the number of protected areas.

C.There is not enough protected land around the world.

D.Protected areas fail to work better than unprotected areas.

【4】What is Hannah Wauchope’s advice about protected areas?

A.They should occupy a large area.

    B.They should host various animals.

C.They should be under good management.

D.They should give water birds more freedom.

  • 27、   One of the things that I have learned during my time here is that Czech people are really good at celebrating and holding parties. Since I graduated this year, I have a lot of experience of seeing this first-hand. The greatest event for us was definitely the prom (毕业舞会) held for graduating students. Girls started arranging their gowns (礼服) a year beforehand. Graduating students also needed to give their “Midnight Surprise” (a group performance). One interesting thing was that students from every class were holding a huge colorful bag and people had to throw money into it. I didn’t get any sleep that night because we all went to an after-party with our teachers and friends.

At the end of April, we held the traditional activity called “The Last Ringing”, which lasted for two days. Every class had a theme and graduates wore different costumes. We prepared tasty desserts and food to sell. We broke into one classroom after another asking students to give us money, which might seem insane but it is part of the tradition.

By the end of May, we had already finished all of the final exams and we started preparing for the graduation ceremony. It was held in the conference hall (会场) in our school at five o’clock in the afternoon. Parents could come, too. We got our graduation certificate in a gray folder (文件夹) from our class teacher, and we also shook hands with the headmaster. When I received my certificate, I almost teared up-I didn’t want to say goodbye to them or to the school.

That wasn’t the last celebration though. After four days, our class invited all of our teachers to come to a farewell dinner at an Italian restaurant. We used all of the money we collected from the prom and “The Last Ringing” to order pizzas and champagne. We all talked and ate together.

A year ago, we were all complaining and hoping that high school would end. But I felt sad when the time finally came and it was over. We have officially left our school. I keep telling myself that everything has an ending. This journey was amazing. Although it has come to an end, I will always keep the memories I made close to my heart. I won’t ever forget them.

1What did the author find interesting about the Czech prom?

    A.Boys and girls exchanged gifts.

B.Students were required to make gowns by themselves.

C.Students had to bring homemade food.

D.Students used a colorful bag to collect money.

2What does the underlined word “insane” mean?

    A.Reasonable. B.Crazy.

    C.Unusual. D.Wonderful.

3Which would the author probably agree with?

A.She is determined to apply to a Czech university.

B.She should have worked harder at school.

C.She values the wonderful memories from high school.

D.She prefers the farewell party over the “The Last Ringing”.

  • 28、   Cats communicate a variety of messages using cat body language. Examples include arching (弓起) their backs as a signal of fear or attack, and slowly blinking () their eyes to signal relaxation. Mouth open and no teeth showed suggests a feeling of playfulness. A cat which chooses to lie on its back shows happiness, trust and comfort. Cats show dissatisfaction by moving their ears back, equal to a human frown.

As is the case with dogs, a twitching (抽动) tail can mean a little anger while a tail held high suggests confidence. Cats will twitch their tails when hunting or angry, while larger twitching suggests displeasure. They may also twitch their tails when playing. A tail held high is a sign of happiness, or can be used as a greeting towards humans or other cats (usually close relatives) while half-raised shows less pleasure, and unhappiness is expressed with a tail held low.

Some characteristic signals, however, are often misunderstood. It is important to keep in mind that each cat may show its feelings with different body language. For instance, a cat rubbing its body along an arm or leg of its owner is not only a way in which to attract attention and, perhaps, a way to ask for food; it is also a way of “marking” its owner as its own. Usually a cat with its tail held high and twitching shows excitement, but this is often mistaken for anger.

Many people fail or are too slow to understand the silent body language of cats. And they may have the false impression that cats are cold-hearted, unfaithful or not clever. To understand cats, people must observe a cat closely and learn what its body signals tell them.

1Which cat body language shows that a cat is relaxed?

A.Lying on its stomach. B.Blinking its eyes slowly.

C.Holding its tail high. D.Moving its ears back.

2According to the passage, a cat will twitch its tail EXCEPT ____.

A.when it feels sleepy B.when it is hunting

C.when it feels angry D.when it is playing

3How many meanings does a cat’s rubbing its body along its owner have?

    A.2. B.3. C.4. D.5.

4The last paragraph intends to tell us ____.

A.many people often have wrong opinions on cats

B.it is not easy to understand cats’ body language

C.every cat has its own special body language

D.we should learn more about cats’ body language
