二、阅读理解 (共4题,共 20分)
  • 26、

I used to think ants knew what they were doing. The ones marching across my kitchen counter looked so confident; I just figured they had a plan, knew where they were going and what needed to be done. How else could ants organize highways, build elaborate nests, launch impressive attacks, and do all the other things ants do?

Turns out I was wrong. Ants aren’t clever little engineers, architects, or soldiersafter all --- at least not as individuals. When it comes to deciding what to do next, most ants don’t have a clue. “If you watch an ant try to accomplish something, you’ll be impressed by how awkward it is,” says Deborah M. Gordon, a biologist at Stanford University.

“Ants aren’t smart,” Gordon says. “Ant colonies are.” A colony can solve problems unthinkable for individual ants, such as finding the shortest path to the best food source, assigning workers to different tasks, or defending a territory from neighbors. As individuals, ants might be tiny dummies, but as colonies they respond quickly and effectively to their environment. They do it with something called collective intelligence.

Where this intelligence comes from raises an essential question in nature: How do the simple actions of individual ants add up to the complex behavior of a group? How do hundreds of honey-bees make a critical decision about their hive (蜂巢)if many of them disagree? The collective abilities of such animals --- one of which grasps the big picture, but each of which contributes to the group’s success --- seem miraculous even to the biologists who know them best. Yet during the past few decades, researchers have come up with fascinating insights.

【1】The author’s former false impression about ants is that he thought them to be _______.

    A.smart

    B.awkward

    C.elaborate

    D.creative

【2】Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Ants will function as a single body once a decision is made by the commander.

B.Ants are the only species which developed collective intelligence.

C.The ant queen plays a role in managing ant workers besides laying eggs.

D.An individual ant can’t comprehend the whole process of a big movement.

【3】The paragraph following the passage will most probably deal with _______.

A.where we can observe such fantastic behavior of ants

B.which is the leading ant in charge of the action

    C.how the collective intelligence works

D.what inspiration can be drawn from the collective abilities

  • 27、   A handwritten letter by a little boy asking Santa for a “very good dad” has captured hearts worldwide.

The boy, known only as “Blake” in the letter, wrote, “Dear Santa, We had to leave our house. Dad was mad. We had to do all the chores. Dad got everything he wanted. Mom said it was time to leave and she would take us to a safer place where we don’t have to be scared.”

“Blake is a 7-year-old boy in one of our shelters, and his mom found this letter in his backpack...” Posted by SafeHaven of Tarrant County on Wednesday, December 18, 2019.

“I’m still nervous. I don’t want to talk to the other kids,” he continued. “Are you going to come this Christmas? Can you bring a dictionary, and a compass and a watch?”

The most heart-wrenching part of the letter was the last line that read, “I also want a very very very good dad. Can you do that too?”

Officials with SafeHaven of Tarrant County, a group seeking to help end domestic (家庭的) violence, posted Blake’s letter to its Facebook page. Now, some of the child’s wishes have come true. All of the gifts he asked for have been donated by people in the community. Though SafeHaven received more than 10,000 gifts this year, they want to shine a light on the bigger issue of domestic violence.

“To us, it was kind of a story that we’ve heard all the time,” Kathryn Jacob, the organization’s president and CEO, told Today. “Like tonight, we have 73 kids in the shelter. Blake is just one of many.”

1The little boy asked Santa for a “very good dad” because ________.

A.his dad was too strict with him B.he was forced to do all the chores

C.he was ill-treated by his dad D.his dad didn’t buy him any gifts

2What do we know about SafeHaven?

A.It has received a lot of concern so far. B.It provides services for homeless children.

C.It posted Blake’s letter without permission. D.Part of its goal is to earn money.

3What is Kathryn Jacob’s purpose by saying the words in the last paragraph?

A.To advertise their shelter. B.To introduce their shelter.

C.To tell more information about Blake. D.To draw attention to domestic violence.

  • 28、   When you were a little child, your parents made decisions about everything for you because you weren’t old enough to take care of yourself and make careful decisions. Finally, however, you grow up and become a teenager. You begin to have your own thoughts and opinions about life.

As you change and grow into this new person who makes your own decisions, your parents may have a difficult time adjusting (调整). They aren’t used to the new you — they only know you as a child.

In most families, this adjustment can cause lots of arguments between teens and parents. You want to cover your walls with posters, but your parents don’t understand why you don’t like your wallpaper any more. Then you feel your parents don’t respect you and don’t allow you to do what you like, and your parents get angry because they disagree with your decisions. And some other things — like the type of friends you have — can cause even bigger arguments, because your parents will always be ready to protect you and keep you safe, no matter how old you are.

However, the good news is that there will be fewer arguments as your parents realize that you have grown up and should have your own ideas. Before you get on well with each other again, communication between you and your parents is very important.

1The writer describes______in the first paragraph.

A.the decisions you may make B.the changes you may make

C.the happy time you may have D.the friends you may have

2Why do your parents need to adjust when you become independent?

A.Because they don’t often stay at home. B.Because they are busy at work.

C.Because they get angry easily. D.Because they’re not familiar with the new you.

3From the passage, we can learn that______.

A.teenagers like to be with their parents

B.parents may have a happy time adjusting

C.parents don’t need to respect their children

D.the type of friends you have may cause bigger arguments

4In order to get on well with your parents, you should often______.

A.communicate with them B.agree with their ideas

C.protect them D.do what you like

  • 29、   For Shaholly Ayers, who was born without a right arm, “no” is something she’s used to hearing. As a child, her teachers told her she wouldn’t be able to participate in a gym class. As a teenager, coaches told her she wouldn’t make the basketball team. And then in college, as she dreamed of becoming a fashion model, an agency (代理机构) she approached said, “It just wouldn’t work.” That day, about 10 years ago, Ayers decided to take action. She decided to realize her dream without an agent.

“I was so new, and I was so green,” she said. “I didn’t have a portfolio or anything. I had to start at the very beginning. I worked with photographers and makeup artists to build my portfolio first, and then I started going to local fashion shops and telling them I’d model for them for free. It worked.”

Ayers has since participated in six seasons of New York Fashion Week, mostly recently walking the runway for Art Hearts Fashion’s shows last month. She has also modeled for Nordstrom, which has nearly 400 chain stores in the USA.

Ayers has a job in digital marketing that she loves, but she hopes to one day be a full-time model. Ayers also hopes to help others find their dream careers as a brand ambassador for Global Disability Inclusion, a consulting company that helps companies attract and hire people with disabilities.

“She shows all we represent,” a manager for the firm said. “She shows to the world that a person with a disability is confident, qualified and, yes, beautiful to be a world-class model.”

Ayers, who asked TODAY Style not to give away her age, as it’s yet another hurdle she has to face in the modeling world, has come a long way from being a little girl in Oregon, where she grew up.

1What can we learn from the first paragraph?

A.Shaholly Ayers lost her right arm in a traffic accident.

B.Shaholly Ayers gave up her dream to become a model.

C.Her teacher encouraged Ayers to participate in a gym class.
