26、Getting sick is a common part of people’s lives. But their attitudes toward being sick and hospital visits vary from country to country. This difference hasn’t been more obvious since the start of the novel coronavirus epidemic - when a great number of people are falling ill all at the same time.
The conditions in the US are getting worse quickly, which is largely due to the fact that there’s no universal health-care system. According to the 2019 US Census, 28 million people are not covered or do not have adequate health insurance, meaning that they would probably avoid getting tested for the virus, for fear of the cost of being hospitalized.
‘‘There is a strong financial reason to hide symptoms, to try to keep working and caring for children, and thus, they’re spreading the virus … simply because they have no other choice.” wrote reporter James Hamblin on The Atlantic.
Germany, on the contrary, has one of the world’s best-developed public healthcare systems that covers every citizen. People in Germany - who have ‘‘high levels of job security’’, according to the Los Angeles Times - are also more likely to follow the separation measures and stay at home without having to worry about losing their jobs.
Japan also has universal public health-care, but it brings another kind of problem: People tend to seek more medical care than necessary. According to Yusuke Tsugawa, a physician at Harvard University, Japan has three times more outpatient (门诊) visits than in the US, and patients also stay in hospital for three times longer than in the US. This often wastes medical resources, which are even more critical and precious during a global pandemic.
‘‘It isn’t good to do tests just to ease public anxiety,” Kentaro Iwata, an infectious disease expert at Kobe University, Japan, told Reuters. ‘‘If they test everyone with light symptoms, the medical system will break down.”
Indeed, a country’s healthcare system is the key to keeping its people safe - it’s also the key to whether a country can survive a crisis like the novel coronavirus pandemic.
【1】Why are the conditions in the US worsening rapidly?
A.All people there avoid getting tested.
B.Most people there don’t have health insurance.
C.Most people there can’t afford being hospitalized.
D.All people there are not covered by health-care system.
【2】According to James Hamblin, what makes people in US try to hide their illness?
A.They choose to do so.
B.They don’t want to work alone.
C.They are concerned about money.
D.They want to stay with their children.
【3】What is the problem in Japan?
A.They have too many outpatient visits.
B.They waste too much time on unnecessary testing.
C.They spend too much money on public health-care.
D.They don’t make the best use of medical resources.
27、Dog owners walked about 23minues longer each day than non-dog owners In a new study, dog owners took 2,760 additional seps—compared to people who didn’t have a dog at home. Bu here’s the real good news: That extra exercise was done at a moderate(适度的)pace, which means it could help adults meet their recommended weekly totals for physical activity.
The research, published in BMC Public Health, focused on adults 65 and older, who tend to be less active than younger people. The study included 43 dog owners and 43 non-dog owners, all of whom were monitored continuously for three week-long periods. When they compared the two groups, the researchers found that dog ownership was associated with a large, potentially health-improving effect.
Dog owners walked about 23 minutes longer each day than non-dog owners, 119 minutes versus 96 minutes on average. They also took an additional 2,760 steps, and had eight fewer continuous periods of sitting down. Most of that extra walking was done at moderate pace, defined as 100 or more steps a minute. Dog owners walked at this pace for 32 minutes a day, versus just 11 minutes a day for non-dog owners.
The World Health Organization(WHO)recommends that adults get at least 150 minutes of physical activity a week. This increased walking time alone could just about satisfy that requirement, say the researchers—so it makes total sense that 87 percent of dog owners in the study met these guidelines, versus just 47 percent of non-dog owners.
Co-author Nancy Gee says that pet ownership may help older adults get more activity or maintain their current activity level for a longer period of time. “This could improve their chances of a better quality of life, improved or maintained cognition(认知), and perhaps, even overall longevity(寿命),”she said.
Here at Health, we’ ll add that caring for pets has been shown to have plenty of other physical and mental health benefits, as well. As animal lovers ourselves, we’ re happy to add one more to the list.

28、When you step on an escalator (自动扶梯), do you stand to one side to let others pass? When someone in the room fans himself with a piece of paper, do you open a window? If you ask someone to hang out with you and they stare at you blankly, do you withdraw the invitation? If you don’t do any of these things, I have some unfortunate news: you cannot “read the air”.
Knowing the unspoken rules governing social life requires a comprehensive understanding of your environment, whatever its setting. It’s a skill that’s valuable anywhere in the world—but in Japan, it is raised to another level. Reading the air—kuuki o yomu in Japanese—is a constant exercise. Misreading the air can blow business deals or ruin relationships.
Rochelle Kopp, who runs a cross-cultural training firm Japan Intercultural Consulting, says that while all nations have varying degrees of indirect communication, in Japan the phenomenon is more prominent in society. For example, if you’re talking to a client who has long since lost interest, you risk being labeled KY—a pejorative Japanese slang term that stands for “kuuki ga yomenai”, or “unable to read the air”.
A big part of “reading the air” is picking up on non-verbal cues. David Matsumoto, a psychology professor at San Francisco State University, studies micro-expressions: tiny involuntary facial tics that can give away a person’s true emotions. When, for example, a client at work says they’re happy with the job you’re doing, a very subtle lip twitch or eyebrow raise could mean they’re not telling you the truth. Noticing micro-expressions, along with other non-verbal communication, is important in any interaction, no matter where you are.
“Silence is one non-verbal signal. So is shifting of posture. A social smile could be yet another signal,” says Matsumoto. “All of these are part of the non-verbal package that contributes to that contextual meaning.” Matsumoto runs Humintell, a company that provides workshops on how to get better at reading micro-expressions and other non-verbal signals. Others provide such services, too; in Tokyo’s Toranomon business district, researcher Kenji Shimizu runs the Institute for Science and Being Sensitive to the Situation.
Like Matsumoto, Shimizu teaches people how to master micro-expressions. Shimizu uses a system developed by U.S. psychologist Paul Ekman, who coined the term and described the subtle facial changes as “involuntary emotional leakage”. “If you notice someone’s disgust (厌恶) —wrinkling around the nose—or anger—brows lowering, eyes widening, lips pressing—and yet those expressions are masked by smiles, you may want to figure out their actual thoughts.” Shimizu says.
【1】According to the article, which of the following statements about “reading the air” is TRUE?
A.The culture of “reading the air” only exists in Japan.
B.It is the skill of understanding others’ unspoken “language”.
C.It is the key to maintaining good interpersonal relationships.
D.The skill is all about picking up other people’s micro-expressions.
【2】The underlined word “pejorative” in Paragraph 3 most probably means“________”.
A.disapproving
B.approving
C.unfamiliar
D.familiar
【3】What can be learnt from Kenji Shimizu’s words?
A.A social smile is the best way to hide your emotion.
B.Micro-expressions can give away the complete contents of a person’s emotions.
C.The non-verbal signals on a person’s face can reveal his or her true intentions.
D.You can improve your ability to read other people’s emotions with practice.
29、 New arrivals to China often get the impression that Chinese people spend all of their time working. Yet,people in China devote quite a bit of time to leisure(休闲).
Surprisingly, the Chinese love to relax. They love to spend their time taking care of flowers, raising birds and other pets. Chinese people are also fond of leisurely games, like the Chinese game Mahjong. The Chinese also love to play cards to pass the time. It is a national sport almost as widespread as petanque in France.
The Chinese have many ways to idle(休闲),including gossiping or chitchat, which is seen as a true art. Taking a walk and doing some light reading are also considered as idleness. If a person does all of these things, they are definitely an idler.
Busy people should also have free time. When at work,Chinese people often say that they need to “steal some time” from work.
Taoism(道教)teaches that people should improve moral character through relaxation, and be happy to lead a simple and honest life. This is why Chinese people believe so strongly in enjoying a carefree and relaxed life.
Poet Tao Yuanming set up a way of life that emphasizes a balanced country life. In a sense, his way is both earthy and spiritual. It has given us a way to be relaxed and well, while being balanced and carefree.
In China, having a life that is too full is not a sign of wisdom. It is only when things are empty that they can be filled. Hopefully, this information will remind people to rest a little and make room for free time in a busy life.
