21、Hello, my name is Jimmy. One day my eighth grade friend said that he was taking the school geography bee (比赛) written test the next day. Something in his tone told me that he was not looking forward to the bee. I could not understand! It sounded like a lot of fun to me.
All day, I found myself wishing I was in middle school, so I could take part in the geography bee. During my lunch break I walked up to my social studies teacher’s classroom and asked her if I could take part in the bee for middle school. But she did hesitate (犹豫) a bit because I was too young, just a primary school pupil. I told her that I really loved to learn about our earth, its rivers, mountains, all the human cultures on it. She was still not sure but finally said, “Yes.” I jumped at once!
That next morning I was going to be in the school bee as a participant and learn things I was really interested in. I was not nervous one bit, instead just very excited to be doing something I really loved. We had four written rounds-two on the United States and two on the world. I did surprisingly well and placed on the top ten, beating some of the strong seventh and eighth graders. I lost in the oral round the next day, but won my teacher’s attention. I came home and looked up the answers to the questions that I and other students lost on.
I placed second in my school the following year, but more importantly, I realized that I really loved geography and enjoyed the time I spent learning it. I may have lost that first bee, but I won the world; a love for that world; love to explore that world-one country, one mountain, one river, one landform at a time; and that is certainly the biggest win for me truly!

23、Disney’s new film Wish came out in China on November 24th. In the film, 17-year-old Asha makes a wish to the sky. Star answers her and they go on a great adventure (冒险之旅).
Do you like to make wishes? In Australia, where I’m from, we like to make wishes in different ways.
Playing outside, you see a dandelion (蒲公英). Pick one up and blow it, then make a wish! Or you could throw a coin (硬币) into a wishing well (许愿井) to make a wish. An old tradition is to make wishes with water. Water is so important to life. People felt it was a gift from the gods (神). So, they started throwing coins into wishing wells. They must say their wish out loud. This way, they believe the spirits (精灵) of the water will hear the wish and make it come true. And of course, no one misses making a wish on their birthdays.
I would sometimes make wishes at Christmas. One year, I left biscuits and milk for Santa Claus and wrote a note to him, “Dear Santa, please tell my dad to stop smoking. It is bad for his health”. On Christmas Day, I saw the reply (回复) from “Santa”. He wrote, “Dear Maddy, thank you for the biscuits and milk. As for your dad stopping smoking, that is something he has to do for himself.” Can you guess who wrote it?
I felt a bit sad that Santa couldn’t help my dad. But it taught me something important: the person only himself or herself can really make something come true.
